Mr. Ted McGrath of the now hiatused Antimagic (and ex- These Are Powers ) has put together an album under his solo moniker ATM . The EP is called The Slow Fade , and is being released by Temple South (cassette) and Creative Capitalism (digital). McGrath has fused together numerous influences from punk, no wave, glam, postpunk, art rock and experimental pop to form these sometimes-gritty, sometimes-scary, sometimes-bleak sounds. Two floor toms (one treated, one normal), a snare, an Alesis SR-16 drum machine, a Boss SP 202 sampler, [...]

I recently heard that Parts & Labor are going on an "extended hiatus". Here is their statement regarding the hiatus... Dear friends, This January, Parts & Labor turns 10 years old. We're planning a string of celebratory shows, in which we play selected material from all of our full length albums, leading up to a big 10th anniversary blow out on February 24th, 2012. Following these performances, we're going to take an extended hiatus. We feel incredibly fortunate having had a decade of amazing experiences — making records and new [...]

Here's the first single to leak off Antimagic's "eternally forthcoming" new LP, which should be out next month. The track stars Antimagic at their finest: infinite snare and tom rolling under vocal harmonies that would weird out all the Beach Boi'd garage harmonies by virtue of those thick, syrupy unconventional intervals. And then there's the signature feedback drone feedback burying the closing minute in a humid heap of low end. Antimagic, "Bang"

Noah and Rick of YVETTE sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series. q: What is the last song you (really) heard? n: A while back I happened on Tristan Perich 's 1-Bit Symphony . It's a battery, a microchip, a couple switches, a volume knob, and a headphone jack simply wired together and mounted in a jewel case. The idea of it is pretty wild - that you can participate in [...]

Adam and Baxter of MIRACLES sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series. q: What is the last song you (really) heard? a: Antimagic 's "Shake Shake Shake" has been in heavy rotation all year. I rediscovered De La Soul 's Stakes is High last week after not listening to it for a few years. It still rules. b: For me, it's a tie between Young Widows ' "Old [...]

Marcia and Ted of ANTIMAGIC sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series. q: What is the last song you (really) heard? m: You Got Lucky (youtube) by Tom Petty . t: "Same Old Scene" by Roxy Music , from their much-maligned Flesh & Blood album from 1980. It's serves as the opening and closing music of the film Times Square also from 1980. Total ear candy perfection, but still kinda weird. [...]

So, another Record Store Day come and gone. I made a few of purchases at Sound Fix and Permanent Records (and saw EULA play). I have to admit I was really not that motivated to gobble up RSD exclusives. I just bought a few albums that I knew I would want to listen to on vinyl (including one classic double LP ). My purchases follow... Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will by Mogwai [...]

Percussion heavy. Oppressive. Trance inducing. Whats not to love about Brooklyn duo Antimagic? The Shake Shake Shake single was released back in December and it was the first I heard of the band. I've been jamming to their 2009 debut " Trash Symmetry " ever since. Check out the single and my favorite cut off of Trash Symmetry below.

It may be tempting, without knowing for sure, to announce that Antimagic are the first Irish band (or band from any other nation for that matter) to appear on this blog in 2011. You see with names like Ted McGrath and Marcia Cahill it could be a fair enough assumption but then they are based in Brooklyn so it may just be a beyond first generational thing. Matters not anyway because as soon as 'Inner Most Secret Shogun Heart' obliquely rolls into town your brain will be fried at its compelling non-adherence to conventional song structure. The song is the [...]
