Freddie Fisher & The Schnickelfritz Band were a great novelty band from the 1930s, pre-dating Spike Jone's debut in 1942, and if their music has a familiar sound to readers of this blog, they should - most of the members left band leader Fisher and formed the Korn Kobblers . A nice person has posted an album of Fisher & Co. songs of wildly-varying sound quality, but hey, it's free, so who can complain? Gonna have to find an album by these guys. For further study... Jewelry is one of the things most people invest on. Their value usually increases as they age. Those which were produced during the 1930s to 1950s are considered antique and they are expensive. Because of this, people collect different kinds of antiques. Collectors should take utmost care when buying antique rings and other jewelries because some people will take advantage of a person's lack of knowledge regarding antiques. There are people who offer fake antique gold rings. A thorough scrutiny on the item will keep one from being fooled by these forgers. A jewelry that is antique is [...]

. . . Finding the good things in life sometimes requires taking a blind leap of faith into the unknown. That's me at age 11, staring at a cardboard box illustrated with a reptilian hand, musing that a game called "X-Com: Terror From The Deep" just had to be good. That's me at 22, eating a co-worker's wife's sautéed asparagus to avoid giving insult. That's me at 18, staring at the cover of A Fire Upon The Deep and A Deepness in the Sky , buying them both simply because the titles were so cool. [...]

" Ray Bourbon had a show business career as a comedian and female impersonator that spanned over fifty years, well into an era when Gay liberation would take shape. He was perhaps the most well-known and well-traveled performer in Gay venues during the last century, but he remains largely forgotten today, his comedy both [...]

D ebuting in the early 1930s, The Hoosier Hot Shots where one of the first, and best, novelty groups of the 78 rpm era, and if you can't figure out what they were like from the song title "From The Indies To The Andes In His Undies," well, pardner, there ain't much I can tell ya. Listen to me, talking like a hayseed - that's what listening to these guys will do to you. But despite their "rural" schtick, they were actually plenty sophisticated, essentially playing hot jazz with as much virtuosic [...]

Young Antiques A Man, Not a Biography [Two Sheds Music, 2011] 3.5 out of 5 stars Download This Album: Amazon MP3 l iTunes If I could describe Young Antiques' latest effort A Man, Not A Biography in three words, those words would be: dusty, whiskey and classic. Dusty because the songs sound like they come from years of rough, sweaty, blue-collar life experiences. They're the kind of [...]

Sometimes, I like my music crisp and tight. Sometimes, I like hooks and choruses and stuff I can sing along with in the car, where nobody cares if I sound like shit. Ever feel like that? That is not a time to listen to The Antiques. I can't understand why this band picked its name. "The Antiques" suggests something old, dusty and dark brown. And boring. And old. If you're looking for that, you do not want to listen to The Antiques. But if [...]

James at Pop Headwound always has good music to recommend. Recently he wrote about Antiques and I am very glad he did. I have been listening to their recently released album "JWNS" and it is pretty damn great. From what I can gather the band has been around for the best part of a decade, under different names and members, releasing 4 albums. Now in June, 2011 they release "JWNS". I could describe it as a cosmic collision of Teenage Fanclub and Guided By Voices to give you some idea. It's crunchy, slightly lo-fi and incredibly [...]

Continuing our survey of Spike Jones-like comedic music from the 78rpm era (we've already checked out Irving Aaronson and Borrah Minevitch & His Harmonica Rascals ) comes this album surveying the long, prolific career of one of the greatest novelty/oddball groups of the era, the Korn Kobblers (no relation to that Korn). During their 1940's heyday, they were a constant presence on the radio and concert circuit. Apart from the lyrical nonsense of songs like "Horses Don't Bet On People" ("horses don't have [...]
To some degree, Antiques is a mysterious band. They are somehow based out of three cities (Brooklyn, Cambridge and Abilene), jokingly announced their break-up and have a website full of bizarre pictures and writings such as statements like, "My house is on fire" randomly inserted at the end of posts. The one sure thing? They know how to write a good song. Letter #2.mp3 Antiques - Letter #2 Download read more

Antiques fourth release, JWNS is a garage-y, lo-fi affair in the best of ways. There's brilliance beneath the smudge and that's what makes this recording so rewarding. You have to pay attention. You have to be patient. You have to dust off the crusty veneer that cakes JWNS . Though much of the record rocks out pretty well with wall of sound, squelching guitars relegating the vocals to the background, some of the best moments are the quieter tracks like Smile At Me and Making Friends which sound [...]

Spike Jones wasn't the only purveyor of crazy novelty music in the first half of the 20th century (we've already covered Irving Aaronson ). Russian-born Borrah Minevitch led a zany combo that were very popular from the late 1920s to Minevitchs' untimely death in the '50s. Space Age Pop sez, " the novelty of a whole harmonica band, using the full range from huge bass to tiny alto harmonica, made a terrific impression. Within a year, Minevitch and his Harmonica Rascals were one of [...]

>> Contemporary dream pop giants Sun Airway disclosed today that Dead Oceans will issue in July a new 7" single from the Philly-based act. The single features the songs "Wild Palms" and "Symphony In White, No. 2;" both will be available at the usual digital storefronts this coming Tuesday. In a twist that we love, the songs will not debut at a blog, but on TERRESTRIAL RADIO SUCKAH! Philadelphia's WXPN gets the honor, and the songs will be played on Dave P's Making Time radio show Friday from 7-9PM, which yes, of course, you can [...]

It's time to listen to a bunch of the tracks I have not posted recently. Here is the next NOT POSTED mix. These are just a few of the songs that would get there own individual posts on here on GIMME TINNITUS, if I only had the time. You can stream all the songs in this mix using the Yahoo media player at the bottom of the page OR if you are browsing with Chrome you can play (and scrobble ) the whole page using the ex.fm extension OR [...]

While still sticking to my plan of only posting records this whole month (nothing taken from digital sources) I admit I got things a little wrong - today's post comes from 78s, and they're made out of shellac, not vinyl. Oh, what ever , this is all utterly wonderful music no matter what it's made out of, all from the first half of the history of audio recordings. And all the songs are about Los Angeles, in some way. Interesting that the name " Los Angeles" is almost never used - "Hollywood" and "California" were the magic [...]

It has been a long wet winter. The living room windows remain streaked with moisture where rain has infiltrated the double paned glass. Minerals deposits cling to dried drip lines to mark where droplets made their way between the panes. Looking inside out you get a frosted view of the world. It has been cold on both sides of the casements. I lost my best friend just before the beginning of Spring after [...]
Today I was chilling at work to this latest Subsoniq radio show, and found it to be so dope, I had to share the goodness with you all. Loads of Tribe influence beats, and all around goodness. K-Murdock does a great job, spinning some real great beats. About: A brand new Subsoniq "Instru-Mentals", which explores [...]
