Sérgio Mendes swept into America with "Mas Que Nada" in 1966 and went on to establish immortality among connoisseurs of both classy cocktails and bossa nova rhythms. He is working on his new album and still claims to be nervous before shows—especially if he's playing at the Hollywood Bowl. He will play the Hollywood Bowl this Wednesday. This interview by Ayse Arf.

Filed under: Around the World It must be hard sometimes for Luciana Souza to keep track of who she is night to night, musically speaking. The tour she's on right now has already seen her in an intimate jazz/bossa nova residency at San Francisco Performances, working in a trio format at New York's Jazz at Lincoln Center and teaming in her mezzo-soprano persona with dancer Rosa Collantes for three shows with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, sandwiched around a brief Spain tour. Still to come are another dance/orchestra program [...]

Lets just start off by saying Elvis Costello is one lucky MF. His wife, Diana Krall, is not only an extremely talented piano player and singer, but she's so sexy it's ridiculous. She could just stand there with no makeup, her hair in curlers, singing names out of the phone book and it would still be sexy as hell. On her latest release, Quiet Nights , she uses her smoky, sensuous vocals to give new life to some old standards. The orchestration and arrangements on [...]

What better way to celebrate St. Patty's Day than to listen to ten different versions of Brazil's "all-time best" song. Easily, this is one of my all-time favorite standards. This was the first version of this song I can remember hearing. It was around 1994. I was struck by how out of place the song sounded when heard with the other tracks on Breakaway. Art Garfunkel ∞ Waters of March The original song-writer: Antonio Carlos Jobim ∞ Aguas de Marco Some more for your [...]

Filing for bankruptcy last week , Muzak – purveyor of smooth sounds and easy-listening classics to offices and malls everywhere – revealed that it will be unable to pay its nearly half-billion dollars in debts. Since 1936 the company has been sedating the masses with a catalog which now numbers over 2.6 million songs. Is Muzak finally getting the shaft? Or is there a ground floor opportunity here for an acquirer? Regardless of its future or your thoughts on the genre it created, Muzak has a storied past as part of American culture. [...]

On any given night, the Tin Angel in Philadelphia's Old City section can be practically dead or packed to the rafters. As far as venues go, it's a fairly small space so it was no surprise when there was standing room only for a Anya Marina , Jenny Owens Young and Greg Laswell performance. I slipped in through the entrance as California singer-songwriter and radio DJ Anya Marina's set began and managed to snag a bar stool flush against the merch table in the back of the room. Marina's voice is just as [...]
This is the first installment of contributor John Bohannon's monthly column, The Brazilian Beat . When looking at another country's music through Western ideals, it's hard to get past the conditioned view that most Americans have of what "world" music is. From Barnes and Noble to Best Buy, some of the world's most prestigious artists have been lumped into Latin Café compilations and stereotyped as a whole. Some years ago, the pieces of international music started falling into place, and the rock n' roll mindset of [...]

Filed under: Around the World Spinner.com : Meet the 'Novas Bossas,' same as the bossa nova? Yes and no. In honor of Mother's Day, here are a few songs my mom loves. Give yer mum a big hug (or a phone call), she deserves it. Antonio Carlos Jobim - "Wave": mp3 My mother isn't very hip. But I have to give her credit for introducing me to bossa nova and its master practitioner, one Tom Jobim. Listening to his album Wave led me to his work with Stan Getz and Frank Sinatra, as well as on to Luiz Bonfa [...]
