If you're at all familiar with Perfume Genius ' exquisitely heart-wrenchin g debut album "Learning" , it should come as no surprise that the follow-up is equally as touching. There are few artists whose voice alone can give you chills, but Mike Hadreas ( Perfume Genius ) is one them, along with the likes of [...]
Antony Hegarty possesses one of the most incredible voices in recent decades, so taking on Antony and the Johnsons' songs is no small task. The same can be said of Robert Wyatt, whose songs are steeped in the whimsical tradition associated with the mid-'60s British Canterbury scene. Thus, when The Unthanks , led by sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank, announced their intention to cover songs by both, and to do it live no less, critics' ears perked up. They've spoken about Diversions Vol 1: The Songs of Robert Wyatt and Antony and the Johnsons (the first in [...]

Esteemed composer Philip Glass , who is celebrating his 75th birthday this year, has curated a star-studded lineup including Lou Reed , James Blake , Antony Hegarty and Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields . So how did Hegarty get involved? "I performed for [...]
Antony & the Johnsons cover Jay-Z and Beyonce's 'Crazy in Love' live at Radio City Music Hall.

photos by Amanda Hatfield , words by Rachel Kowal A thick cloak of darkness draped the stage of Radio City when Antony Hegarty began to sing. My eyes trained on his white floor-length robe, the only thing that shone through the fog and shadows. With its piano melodies and strings arrangements, the Antony and the Johnsons discography is far from sonically lacking. But after hearing the opening measures of "Rapture," [...]

After a recent opening gig for with Girls , Real Estate is playing a $5 show near their home across the Hudson in Jersey, both Chairlift and Cloud Nothings are both playing in support of their new records (not the same place/time), and, among other things, Antony and the Johnsons is hitting the stage at Radio City Music Hall. Words by Jim Oh man, you gotta love it when a band has the genre label "avant garde" next to their name. You can best bet that what you're about to listen to is either going to be absolutely awful or strikingly beautiful and interesting. Too often it's the formal and not the latter, but once and a while we got lucky right? One time I went out on a limb and listened to the absurdly avant garde Antony and The Johnsons , hesitating ever so slightly as I pushed play, preparing myself [...]

In 2006, Antony and the Johnsons and Charles Atlas toured Europe with a concert and live video portrait of 13 women from New York City. The film TURNING explores the heart of that performance. Through its synthesis of Antony´s songs and unfurling video portraiture of the beauties who performed on stage, TURNING creates an intimate and cinematic experience exploring the themes of identity, transcendence and the revelation of essence. A journey through an exotic terrain of innocence, metamorphosis and androgyny by way of an elegantly stylized blend of music, projected imagery, and live performance. [...]

In news that will only really benefit New Yorkers, the Museum of Modern Art is commissioning Antony Hagarty to create a performance, titled Swanlights , to be staged at Radio City Music Hall on January 26th. Though Antony And The Johnsons latest album was also titled Swanlights , this performance will be "a meditation on light, nature, and femininity, will include songs from all four albums by Antony and the Johnsons," as reported by the New York Times . Swanlights will receive symphonic arrangements from s Nico Muhly, Rob Moose, and Maxim [...]

The video doesn't do much for me, but I am liking this song, "Prisoner of Love" from Jessica 6. The track also features guest vocals from Antony of Antony and the Johnsons. The connection here, which may not be obvious if you don't follow Hercules & Love Affair, but all worked with one another during [...]

It's going to be impossible to claim that Beyoncé Knowles has "quietly" put together a vicious song catalog, stocked with everything from heart-wrenching ballads to shamelessly fun bangers , but she has done it without some of the fanfare associated with other pop stars. And, you know, the musical work is stellar; it makes a ton of sense that others have dove into reinterpreting her songs. Jumping off with yesterday's cover by The Horrors , here's the ten best indie rock covers of Beyoncé's sterling, still-growing catalog. Read More...

It seems like Arts and Crafts Records has been rather quiet for some time, but I've finally come across some new music from the label, by way of The Darcys . They've got a new album, self-titled, coming out on October 25th, and this single is grabbing my attention. It begins with this operatic opening, soaring vocals taking the focal point, but keep on listening. About midway, however, the song gently erupts with discordant guitars and bits of ambient noise exploding into the background. It's like Antony and [...]
Good enough for a casual dance party, but doesn't really live up to the promise of the first: aka, sophomore slump.

We think that a tidy looking blog is a good thing. A fine aesthetic, pretty colours, big buttons and a design that's easy on the eye creates a great first impression to anyone visiting for the first time, helping to ensure a readers return. Disco Naïveté is one such blog, as the editor, Jarri, has selected to use Tumblr as his blog host of choice, designing one of the most gorgeous blogs in existence. Don't be fooled by the glossy looks though, as behind the beauty of Disco Naïveté is a taste in music so deadly it [...]

Tomorrow we head down to the first Wilderness Festival , taking place on our back door in the beautiful Cornbury Park Estate. Previously this lovely venue has hosted the Cornbury Festival, which has thankfully now moved elsewhere as (trust us) it has the worse possible line-up you could ever imagine for an event of this type. Anyway, the Wilderness is, as we say, a different kettle of fish featuring Gogol Bordello, Toots and the Maytals, Dry The River, Hypnotic Ensemble, CW Stoneking and Hayseed Dixie all creating the sounds today. Antony and the Johnsons [...]
