[Have we had enough of secret/surprise shows? Maybe ...] Top show picks for Grammy eve: ► Ex-Broken West frontman Ross Flournoy, now doing business as Apex Manor , has a pretty magical album in "The Year of Magical Drinking." The L.A. quartet's West Coast tour stops at its home base tonight, the Satellite, supported by Jerry Borgé — the nom de tune of songwriter/multi-instrumentali st Jason Borger , whose name you will find in the credits of records by the likes of American Music Club, [...]

After waiting out interstate closings and making a laborious drive through the Rockies, Apex Manor arrived in Denver tired, but in high spirits. The new band teams former The Broken West frontman Ross Flournoy with Brian Whelan (also of TBW), frequent co-writer Adam Vine, Andy Creighton ( The World Record ), and Derek Brown (of numerous west-coast bands). One week after the release of The Year of Magical Drinking , Apex Manor played their very first show to a Santa Cruz audience. This week sees them road-testing the live act with a short tour. [...]

A power-pop singer/songwriter recovers from a not-so-magical year There’s something exciting happening in Los Angeles; singer/songwriters like Bleu and Adam Marsland are breaking out once again, but instead of rolling down from the communal experience of the canyon, they’re holing up in homes and hobby studios. Such was the inspiration for former Broken West guitarist/vocalist Ross Flournoy, whose relocation to Pasadena after a band breakup severed his daily musical connection, and left him casting about for direction. Amid writer’s block and a daily beer habit, his lifesaver was an NPR song competition [...]

It is sometimes astonishing how much good music is floating around out there. We can't possibly get to all of it, though we'd love to tell all of you about every cool band we ever heard. It's sort of the same idea with an event like the Super Bowl. Sure, only two teams end up [...]
Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. [tweetmeme] In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler offers a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes. Hot Sugar "The Seagull" from the free Muscle Milk EP [ released 1/28/11 | instrumental, experimental-pop ] [...]

Ross Flournoy has gone by many different monikers since he started making music. He started a band named the Brokedown whom, for legal reasons, changed their name to The Broken West . After a couple of great albums, the group disbanded which led to his current musical project, Apex Manor . Names may change, but the thing that's stayed the same is his uncanny ability to match an infectious melody with charging, guitar-heavy power-pop. If Summerteeth is one of your favorite Wilco albums, you'll love this dude's stuff. First single "Under the Gun" is [...]
SHUGO TOKUMARU(Indie Pop)I have no clue what this song is about... probably because it isn't in english. Although, I do know that it is infectiously jolly and something must be funny. In fact, it must be unbelievably funny. Forget the simple "hahaha", forget the slightly more ridiculous "bahaha", and skip all the way down to "lahaha". That's the title of the song, "Lahaha". It's by Shugo

"My My Mind" by Apex Manor from the album The Year Of Magical Drinking. Apex Manor - My My Mind from Merge Records on Vimeo .
Under the Gun Apex Manor is the now defunct Broken West, lead by singer songwriter Ross Flournoy continuing the tradition set forth by the Broken West. Apex Manor released their debut record, The Year of Magical Drinking , to the world on Merge Records this week, and by no stretch is it less than fantastic. Infectious tracks, fuzzy guitars, and a dialed down twangy infused power pop sprinkled all over this album give it a warm glow. The album is immediately accessible and not in a bad way, its got this timeless [...]
In the wake of the Broken West's break-up, Ross Flourney has found a new burst of energy with Apex Manor, and a fiery set of songs on his new album. Anyone who caught the Broken West live just before they broke up in late 2009 knows that they were at the height of their powers. After releasing two solid yet sweetly slick pop records for Merge -- 2007's I Can't Go On, I'll Go On and 2008's Now or Heaven -- they had translated them live to a bunch sweaty, rollicking rock songs. In the wake of that band's [...]

It's a big week in terms of quantity and quality, but next to Spoon , I know nothing makes Drake 's week like a new release from Dan Bejar 's Destroyer . -ed. Drake's Take: New Releases 01.25.11 While last week was the first bonafide release day of the year, this week marks the first mother lode drop of 2011, including what many are already designating the album of the year in Destroyer's Kaputt . Besides that, there's Gang of Four [...]

Around this time last year I had promised to start posting mini-album reviews, but that never happened. This year's going to be different and it's something I really want to do consistently. I'm basically going to write a micro-review of three albums that have recently been released, complete with streams and a link to purchase the album. Once or twice a week. Let's see how this goes... Deerhoof : Deerhoof vs. Evil ( Polyvinyl [...]
If you liked the sample of music from Pseudo Kids that I posted in October , then you'll love the 10 new songs that make up their self-titled LP , recently posted to their Bandcamp site. Like I said back in the fall, Pseudo Kids aren't into gimmicks and flashy nonsense; they're the kind of band that just gets right down to it, puts their hearts and souls into the music and let the results speak for themselves. I like these guys more and more with each listen. [...]

Last year I pretty much ignored covering new music releases (which made it really difficult when it came time to compose my best of list). So this year, I’m going to try to return to doing a weekly post about new music. Pick of the week: Apex Manor : Year of Magical Drinking (Merge) – I was pretty shocked when the Broken West broke up, but happy to find out that lead singer Ross Flournoy was recording a new [...]
