Heavy music for heavy nights in de klerb. MP3: Octave One feat. Lisa Newberry - I Believe (Vice Mix) MP3: Head High - Rave (dirt mix) Probably the longest and most drawn out build up ever, and worth it. MP3: Apollo 440 - Liquid Cool (Deep Forest Ice Cold Remix)

This time it's Madonna (yes, really) and Apollo440 on Coming Down. At #44 is Madonna and Ray of Light . I was never a big fan of Madonna, not even in her Jellybean Benitez days. But this album, and this single track, did appeal. But much of that is due to William Orbit's influence and a slightly less than megalomanic, more reflective, set of lyrics. Although the single comes with remixes from Sasha and Victor Calderone, it's the album version that captures its fragile appeal. At 43, is Apollo 440 and their [...]

Well, I didn't expect that. More surprising than Rafa or Germany losing is the return of Apollo 440. Nine years after their last album comes a new one. Just like that. After all this time, can it be any good? Apollo 440 were formed way back in 1990 by Trevor and Howard Gray with fellow Liverpudlians Noko and James Gardner, although Gardner left after the recording of the first album. Their peak commercial years were 1997-99 when they had huge hits with Ain't Talking 'bout Dub and Stop The Rock (albeit that their creative peak [...]

Apollo 440 is back with a new album called The Future’s What It Used To Be turn up the volume and RAWK

Not the most obvious choice of artist for Ambient Sunday, I grant you. But I was reminded of this by a post from JC over at The Vinyl Villain, who posted mixes of Walking Down Madison ( here ) but didn't include the ambient mix. This provides a gentle, whispy backing, focused on the tom toms, leaving Kirsty's voice to carry the track. The remix was by Howard Grey of Apollo 440. It's a shame she didn't work with other electronic artists. Kirsty MacColl - Walking Down Madison (6am ambient mix) [...]

I love Apollo 440. I just don't love everything they did. At their best - Liquid Cool - they were genius. At their worst they were chart chasers. Here's an example of the latter, their 1997 single Carrera Rapida for the computer game Rapid Racer. This gained some irrelevant remixes, includng this one by E Drum & Bass Orchestra - Simon Plaskett and Norman Fisher-Jones. The duo had remixed other A440 singles under different pseudonyms (Fisher-Jones being part of A440). The remix is dnb with a lounge swing influence. Apollo 440 - Carrera Rapida SP (The E-Z Drum [...]

I just love the original of this 1994 track, which came in a variety of remixes including by Future Sound of London. But I especially liked the mixes that took it away from the dancefloor and more strongly into an ambient direction. As a counterpoint, here is a much more recent remix by Aussie producer Kriece, who takes it further into the dancefloor by giving it a hefty shove in a prog house direction. Even adds what sounds a bit like the wood blocks from Yothu Yindi's Treaty . Nice reinterpretation. [...]

Slow Bongo Floyd featured way back here . They were an underated psychadelic dance band of the 90s. When they featured previously, we had tracks from their two better-known singles Open Up Your Heart and More Than Jesus. Their biog says: Formed somewhere between Oxford Road and Haight-Ashbury, Slow Bongo Floyd was a spiritual journey into the undiscovered depths of experimental soundscapes – where acid house morphed with hippie-folk, rock, punk, psychedelica and the blues. Early recordings were chaotic and beautiful, anyone who came to the studio appeared on the music in progress in some [...]

Mighty Mike - Peut-être un dub [ mp3 ] Anaïs - Peut-être une angine Apollo 440 - Ain't talkin' bout dub Mighty MAGIC Mike did it again APC TOP 10 for sure
I hope everyone had a better Thanksgiving than I did. To recover from you family holiday trauma here is some big dumb 90s dance music. Because we all need more of that. Apollo 440 Carrera Rapida (Theme From Rapid Racer) (Salt Tank's Rip Tide Remix) Carrera Rapida (Theme From Rapid Racer) (Frog Junkies Funk Junkie Remix) Carrera Rapida (Theme From Rapid Racer) (The E-Z Drum & Bass Orchestra Remix) Carrera Rapida (Theme From Rapid Racer) (Mondo Azul Remix) [...]

Folk singer and sometime pop star Kirsty MacColl even got in on the remixes in the mid-90s. Her voice is peculiarly suited to the remixes as its distinctiveness put it a cut above the often bland or soul-based vocalists used in dance music. Her untimely death is still a tragedy. Kirsty MacColl, daughter of folk singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl, began her own musical career while still in her teens, singing in a band called the Addix, and eventually signed to the legendary Stiff Records. Her first single, the modern girl group [...]

In this post I proceed to blow all credibility by featuring Eurovision-related Euro Dance. For we shall have Gina G, remixed by Apollo 440. Gina G (her real name is Gina Mary Anne Gardner) was born in 3 August 1970, in Brisbane (Australia). She moved to Melbourne in 1987, where she joined the dance group, Bass Culture. They hit the top 40 and launched a massive dance hit with their first single, released in 1992, which was written and sung by Gina. In 1994 she headed off [...]
Columbus, Ohio Apollo 440 - Stop the Rock
All electronic music today. Artists on this post start out "high-brow" and get progressively stupider. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking stupid music, but I don't think anyone is every going to call Tricky "silly dance music." Inversely speaking, no one is every going to claim that Apollo 440's 'Stop The Rock' was a deep and meaningful song. Tricky Aftermath (Hip Hop Blues) Aftermath (I Could Be Looking For People Remix) Aftermath (Version 1) On my senior skip day I went [...]
