I think it was Alex Hudson from one of my fave Vancouver blogs, Chipped Hip that said "Apollo Ghosts are one of Vancouver's most under hyped bands". I agree. Download their 72 for free. posted by @tristanorchard

... and the world rejoices. Exaggeration? Yes, but honestly, if we were allowed to pick two bands to play the last show we'd ever attend, Shotgun Jimmie and Apollo Ghosts would be in the running. It's so refreshing to find a talented band blessed with humility and that actually gives a shit about playing and giving back to their fans, and if you've seen either of these acts on stage you know they put in the work to make sure you walk away feeling like they not only earned [...]

I know, I know. Lists are annoying and trying to assign rankings and value to art is subjective at best. That's why these records - 25 from releases that really made an impact on me in '11 - aren't branded with any type of distinction other than "favorite." These are records, not songs, that warmed my heart, eased my pain, inspired my creativity or simply helped tap my toe or nod my head. They never asked for anything more than a listen, and I was more than happy to oblige. That being said, there [...]

When you're too old to sleep on floors, taking a group trip with your friends to see shows in exotic places like Nanaimo requires lots of planning. Hotels are a tricky choice as they really don't like when you book one room and ask for 5 cots for your many "children" who you explain to the concierge only look like drunk and unruly adults because they have the "Robin William's Jack Disease." Left with few options for Island shelter for my Halloween adventure, I called a hostel and rented a private cottage in the backyard. That [...]

My favourite local band has another spinoff band. Two members of Apollo Ghosts (Adrian and Jay) also play in a group called the Lost Lovers Brigade that has actually been around for longer than the more established project. But the Lost Lovers are only now releasing their debut album, Little Skeletons . Go to Exclaim! to learn more. Below, listen to the reverb-drenched "All the Stars," which could have been an upbeat rocker if it had a rhythm section. As a strummed ballad, it [...]

How haven't I posted this yet? Masterchef is an instrumental post-rock collaboration between two stellar Vancouver indie songwriters, Adrian Teacher of Apollo Ghosts and Alex Zhang Hungtai of Dirty Beaches . The duo released the album Mae Mae in the summer, and below you can hear the dreamy track "Canadian Palm." By way of background, Masterchef is the name of a restaurant in Vancouver's Hastings Sunrise neighbourhood (where this blogger just so happens to live). It's run by an old dude named named Tony (the album includes a song called [...]

Welcome back to this weeks edition of the Indie Sabbath , your Earmilk source for the freshest indie music from folk to rock and every fusion in between. This week we have another always enjoyable selection of the finest indie music being released all over the world. There is a ton of stuff going on in the indie music world, from confusing collaborations (see Jack White and Insane Clown Posse ), to a series of incredible new releases and more to come in the upcoming months, there is something for everyone in [...]

Trying something new this week; a dedicated focus on a sound instead of new bands. Lately, the submissions coming across my desk have been mostly inoffensive "alt.country" and lo-fi surf infused bands struggling to keep up with the hot trends on hypem. As much as I enjoy both of those genres - when done right - I need a break from the sprawling folk collectives and art school noise projects. You aren't going to read about bands experimenting with a never ending supply of melodicas, pedal steel, strings and banjo, all fighting the vocalist and each other for your attention. [...]

If you were like me, and real life forced you to miss Sappyfest this weekend, you apparently missed a life changing weekend that peaked when Charles Bradley took the stage. Fear not sad reader, as this Friday you can attend one of the best shows to hit Halifax in forever. Dog Day , Apollo Ghosts & Bird World are planning to get loud and rock your fucking socks off, and we want to give you a chance to see the madness gratis. Or is it au gratis? Or au gratin? Mmm. [...]
Continuing on the theme from yesterday, here's yet another band that I've really dug for some time, but for whatever reason didn't put them up on the blog. Vancouver's Apollo Ghosts did an admirable job of working their way around the blogosphere with their Mount Benson LP, so I don't really have an excuse for not featuring them until now. But here they are, with a shiny new 73 called Money Has No Heart for you to be listening to. And you don't really have an excuse to not be listening to it, since [...]
So this is weird. I was out of the house all day yesterday, and when I got home I was too beat to sit down and write today's post. I figured after a good night's sleep I'd be able to get up and write it in the morning. So i did just that, but when I sat down to start writing, I found a draft post with nothing but the title "Sell out while you can" scheduled for today. The only problem-for the life of me I couldn't remember who or what I was planning on [...]
Another recommendation from the good folk at The Sound of Sweet Nothing. Apollo Ghosts feels like early Bruce Springsteen got himself hands on a particularly fuzzy guitar, a troop of hip-swaying lady singers and a couple of legal notepads scribbled with non-Jersey related lyrics. It is short and sweet and ends on a saxophone's bluesy [...]

Over the last few weeks, I've been reading and dismissing the (as of yet) failed pop culture experiment that is Bill Simmons new web site, Grantland . The only apt comparison I've come up for the bland, boring content is to place the collection of authors alongside any of the many failed "supergroups." As with most talent consolidations, the initial excitement and promise quickly disappears when egos and unique ideas fail to mesh the way people expect and no one wants to step on toes or force focus. Sadly the end result [...]

It wouldn't be a stretch to say Apollo Ghosts is one of, if not my favorite modern band. The only thing more remarkable than their consistency - honestly, I have loved almost every single songs they've ever record - is how prolific the band is. In just three years, Adrian Teacher and his band have dropped two full lengths and four EPs. Their first two LPs were full of quick hitting, jangly pop ditties that disguised life threatening illness and boyhood nostalgia. Since then, the band has been in a [...]

The last time I posted an Apollo Ghosts song, I complained that it had been a long time since I had heard from the band. That was only a week ago, so it's safe to say that the wait has been a lot shorter this time around. The band has shared its new 73 for free online. Go to Exclaim! to read my article about the five-song collection, and see the totally bizarre artwork. Below you can hear the song "Lightweight." Holy shit! This one is dreamy and [...]

It's been more than six months since I last heard from Apollo Ghosts , which is a long time for this prolific trio. Well, the silence is over. The band just dropped a new EP, For What They Do, They Do , alongside a short story book. Read my interview with frontman Adrian Teacher over at Exclaim! , and read about the EP in the Georgia Straight . Listen over at Bandcamp and order here . Below, listen to the jangling [...]
Ok, get in the car, we're going to Sappyfest ! Well not just yet actually, as the 6th edition of everyone's new favorite festival isn't taking place until July 29-31, but thanks to the good folks at Sappy, we have two festival passes to give away. Scroll to the bottom very bottom right now for entry details, but the festival's full lineup is now out, and it is, as they say ("they" being elderly ladies at a Bridge game of course), the bee's knees. Behold: Owen Pallett et Les Mouches | [...]

For the next week, I'll be taking my talents to South Beach... well, Orlando actually. Do you care? Of course not, but since it's for a work conference the posts will be short and sweet. Fear not though loyal reader, while short and too the point, these posts are also full of free shit for you. Without question, Apollo Ghosts is one of my favorite bands and certainly the most impressive recent musical discovery. Every record, EP, split cassette or cape laden performance is un-fucking-believable. Not only are the songs punchy, nostalgic [...]

I've been listening to a lot of Rose Melberg lately, so I'm thrilled that she has released an EP with Jay Arner (who performs solo and with Fine Mist ). It's got six songs from her most recent solo album, Homemade Ship , which have been reworked with electronic beats and an array of gorgeous synths. Click below to hear the dreamy "Old Days," which features a guest spot from Apollo Ghosts ' Adrian Teacher. The whole EP is killer, so you should buy it from Bandcamp [...]
