Apparently, it's Sam Cohen week on the ole blog. Tuesday, I posted about the former Apollo Sunshine musician's psychedelic-infused solo project Yellowbirds . Now today, we have The Bandana Splits: a doo-wop flavored girl-group project produced by Cohen. The trio of singers is comprised of Brooklynites Lauren Balthrop, Annie Nero, and one of Everybody Taste's favorite folkies, Dawn Landes. Try a single serving of the fabulous debut via "Sometimes"—an irresistibly upbeat harmony and tambourine smothered gem that immediately lifts the spirits. The album, Mr. Sam Presents The Bandana Splits , is out now and you can snag your [...]

I haven't done this in a while for no reason at all. So, Im gonna to try and get it back up and running with music I like and appreciate. I also wanted to try and link up with Spotify as this appears to be a good way to listen / share music in a easy and truly legal way. Below is a mix I put together for Kansas City Roasterie a few years ago and I came across it today and I really like it. [...]

Rating: 7.7/10 If you've gotten lost in all of the pop that seems to creep into the indie world like weeds disallowing the true indie artists to rise, its time you brush it aside. Yellowbirds is Sam Cohen and Sam Cohen is the mind behind Yellowbirds . In fact, he's the only mind behind his latest album composition as he embarked on his solo project after his previous outfit, Apollo Sunshine , disbanded after putting out three albums throughout the past decade. Prior to his work with Apollo Sunshine, Cohen graduated from Berklee College [...]

Tweet It's funny that the first two things that popped into my mind when I heard Yellowbirds was early My Morning Jacket and Wes Anderson. The two seem to be at opposite poles. My Morning Jacket is raw and rough and barn burning in the best sense of each of those words. Wes is hoity-toity, minimal yet grandiose. Yellowbirds takes bits and pieces from each and makes it their own. They are raw in instrumentation, the guitars, airy percussion, and spacey slide [...]
The New York Times describes Apollo Sunshine's sound as "bouncy 60′s-style melodies crack wide open, breaking into outbursts of pummeling and feedback before jumping back into the tune. It's all neatly and cleverly plotted, but with a looming chaos that's anything but nostalgic." Apollo Sunshine- Breeze
If you stop to think about it, "summer break" is a pretty cruel joke we play on ourselves. Since the moment we get into school, we dream about the three months of freedom, and like clockwork it comes every June. What they don't tell you is to live it up because there's no such thing in the working world. Yet we've been so well trained, like Pavlov's dogs, we start to drool when Memorial Day hits. The anticipation that lingers from our school days only makes it worse, like the dog hearing the bell but never getting the treat. As [...]
A lot of jokes involve Canada (and we've perpetuated a lot of those stereotypes here at CoS). But if there's one thing our neighbors to the north do well, it's honor their best and brightest musicians with the Polaris Prize . And that they'll do come September 20th in Toronto. As of now, however, 40 acts and their must-hear albums have been announced, but that list will get leaner by next month. According to the Montreal Gazette , the 2010 award honors albums released from June 1st, 2009 to May [...]
The boys in San Francisco's Big Light will tour this summer in support of their debut album, Animals In Bloom. I see these guys as spectators at just about every show I go to these days. I'll be seeing them perform and hang out at High Sierra as well, and they'll be opening [...] Related posts: Apollo Sunshine Announce New Album, 2008 Tour Dates Tea Leaf Green Tour Dates Tonight: The Apollo Sunshine Experience and More Tour [...]

The music of Christopher Pappas' Forest Fires feels like the unpredictable yet comforting waves of a melancholic sea crashing against the shore. Methodical drums, tambourines, and layered guitars and organs act as a backdrop to the tragic love songs, hopeful highs, and enchanting sirens of Forest Fires' almost hymn-like odes to the world. Earlier this month Forest Fires released Hark! ...and Other Lost Transmissions . One of several standout tracks is "Sweet Tooth", a song reminiscent of the experience of briskly walking through familiar streets and noticing all their details for the first time. Stream [...]

It's indicative of a progressive evolution; a sign of growth, improvement, and a solidification of the core components that create an identity. But if we solely strive for maturity then we're left with impassible and lifeless rigidity, like an unwanted Viagra induced erection. The point being, one must balance the desire for maturation and the wildness [...]

Thursday's show at Paradise featuring Apollo Sunshine and Drug Rug had that warm communal feel of an old-time hootenanny, with each band making appearances during the other's set and guest musicians wandering on and off stage with trumpets and various percussion instruments. One of the highlights of the night had the two bands joining forces on "Breeze" and was captured on Foundwaves' first single camera P.O.V. concert video below. Apollo Sunshine's set was filled with high point after high point including the bass-powered head-banger "Funky Chamberlain (Who Begot Who)", also on video below. [...]

After listening to the mostly singer/songwriter stuff Seth Kallen has been known to peddle we were pretty shocked by the lists he submitted to us. For starters, who knew a guy with an acoustic guitar would be such a fan of Deerhoof??? Seriously though, Seth has submitted a couple of lists for you guys to enjoy and all of them are loaded with albums that we also include in most of our list making. Arcade Fire, Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective, it seems like Seth was listening to all the same stuff we hold near [...]

Photography by Miki-Maddison A second Whip-It post in one week ?? Fuck yeah! Last time, we explored all things Juliette Lewis and had one hell of a good time doing it. Well, throughout the week, Baby's been listening to the soundtrack for the movie and after hearing a few gems off the compilation in the car with her, I had to grab this and listen to it proper myself! I gotta tell ya, this ain't [...]
