Here's the latest news from the Apollo Sunshine camp: they've got a new album coming out at the end of the summer called Shall Noise Upon . It occurred to me that I had yet to feature them, so I figured this was the perfect occasion. Shall Noise Upon will be their third studio album, and it will join an already great discography. Their first, 2003's Katonah , remains my favorite -- it's full of immensely intricate layers of sounds, all weaving together to form an incredibly compelling rock album. Their second [...]

What better way to get your mystical world-consciousness on and display your sense of universal convergence than through screaming guitar psychedelia circa the Beatles on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Apollo Sunshine make this noise, somewhere in the grand scheme of things: Apollo Sunshine - 666 - The Coming Of The New World Government (mp3) Shall Noise Upon is out August 5th.

Listening to Apollo Sunshine today at work on full blast while alone cleaning up the shop I came to the realization that Apollo Sunshine, one of my favorite pop bands ever, are criminally underrated. If you've seen them live, then you're already a fan, because I've yet to meet anyone who has seen them live and left thinking anything besides, damn that guitar player was crazy/amazing, the other two members were also great musicians and that was one of the most intense, crazy fun show I've seen in a while. If you didn't say that, then you were [...]
As I may have mentioned before, I'm currently a student at Berklee College Of Music in Boston. Well, I figured it was time for a little alumni pride list. Seeing as it is a music school, it's only logical that there happen to be quite a few excellent artists that have attended at some point in their lives. All of the music below has at least one former (or current) Berklee student in the band. Cool, huh? And this is only a smattering -- I didn't even mention any of the many famous jazz musicians [...]
by crustcake gerf (NYC) Another big week for shows in the Big Apple. I'll give you a quick overview of the highlights; check out the whole list below for more. Brooklyn post-rockers The Big Sleep released a new record this week. What do you do when you release a new record? Record release party of course! It's tonight at Mercury Lounge and joining them will be Priestbird (formerly Tarantula AD), who are highly recommended. Each of the three members are multi-instrumentalists, and they weave an epic soundscape [...]

Saturdays I'm going to dedicate to promoting music from Live Shows. I'm always a big fan of covers, so the majority of the songs will be covers, however, if there's a particularly good version of a song I like, it might show up too. [mp3] Spoon - Johnathan Fisk/Goodnight (2003-07-08) Spoon played this song to close a show in July 2003. Johnathan Fisk happens to be one of my favourite songs, but the addition of a cover of The Beatles' 'Goodnight' just makes [...]
Yeah, I know. I never update this thing anymore. All my recent posts have included promises that I'll get back on the ball and start posting regularly again. I've broken those promises, so I won't make any crazy claims this time. It's not that I don't want to post; it's just that I'm lazy and [...]
Laconic we have been of late, and current obligations will continue to curb the word count for awhile. We'll make very effort, though, to continue posting music we find and like and hope you do, too. Amy Winehouse is beginning to rival Axl Rose in the show cancellation department. Winehouse's latest cancellation came at LA's Spaceland this week. The singer was apparently "too sad" to perform, apparently still stung from a recent break up. Amy is the "it" act for self-important hipsters here in the US so I'll refrain from "Whinehouse" type puns for fear of disapproval from the cool crowd. Star Magazine reports that Joan Jett and Carmen Electra have become quite the couple. Electra is set to perform with her all-girl burlesque group, the Bombshell Babies. Electra's visit coincides with the annual [...]

Happy Valentines Day. For those of you celebrating the "holiday" without any special someone this year - this post is for you (and coincidentally, me as well). So, grab that bottle of whiskey you've been saving for an emergency, plug in your headphones and drink until you don't miss her (or him) anymore. Here's a [...]

Pittsburgh friends and future professors of your children, John (left) and Matt I received an email last night from my Pittsburgh friends Matt and Danielle breaking down their top ten lists for the year that was 2006. Some of them were pretty interesting, and it's always great to see what comes out of the mind of a PhD candidate who loves Mad Dog 40/40. Here's some of what they came up with for your own curiosity and mine: Concerts Honorable [...]

That last post of mine came a little early I fear. Summer's beaten Autumn's ass for now, though presumably it won't last long. That's why I'm out. This may have been the toughest week to make picks since I started regularly telling you what was going to go down each week. From nights with no good shows, to nights with several good shows it has been tough to make my selections this week. This week also includes the first time that I have nothing to recommend at all. I know that's a sad truth, but I'm sure we will all make do. Anyway, here's the pick for the week hope you guys can make it an excellent one! Monday: I was going to recommend the [...]
