In order to wet your appetite before the full feast, San Diego pop/rockers TV Girl have released the first single off their upcoming EP. I Wonder Who She's Kissing Now [ mp3 ] is a retro number featuring longing vocals and jangling guitars. Full of good vibes, it's arrived just in time for the summer. If your ears like what they're hearing, be sure to check out last years post on the duos previous material [ HERE ] and keep an eye out for the new release.

Gentleman Surfer is the brainchild of Jon Bafus (ex-Sholi), who writes, arranges, and performs all of the project's songs. In November 2011, he released Bountiful Ore , a 12-track collection of instrumental tunes ranging in style from synthed-out victory lap music to jazzy, percussive numbers. Bafus also drums in the band Appetite , a skill at the forefront of many Ore songs. Sacramento's Appetite released the excellent, hook-filled Scattered Smothered Covered last summer via Crossbill Records. The newly released video for "Herbivore" visualizes the song's creative use of loops and unexpected melodic twists. It opens with female dancers in sweatpants slo-mo stomping choreographed moves behind a blindfolded and tied down Teddy Briggs. When he escapes, instead of seducing Briggs (the trope we've all been trained to expect), the girls take their dance stomps and beat the shit out of him. It's hip and it's twisted and it's exactly [...]

Appetite is Sacramento freakfolker (with a pop sensibility) Teddy Briggs. I liked the tropical percussion intermittent in his 2011 Scattered Smothered Covered , like a Beck influenced Vampire Weekend with teeth instead of chinos. The best introduction to Appetite however might be his Johny Cash cover, distilled with marimba and served warm, hear it below. Herbivore is Briggs signature multitracked vocals over a terminal booming that clips along at a nice pace. The video was directed by Briggs and Gonzalo Eyzaguirre. Appetite - Fiery Ring
Appetite - Herbivore Is it weird that see a recurring theme lately of women torturing happless men in music videos? Maybe it's just the weird world in which I travel. Here, Teddy Briggs gets the shit kicked out of him by some badass, sweatpants-wearing dancing hotties - why? not clear. Perhaps they're vegetarians mad at him for eating meat, per the theme of this song. This song is the bonus track off the Scattered Smothered Covered LP, available from Crossbill Records . Portland experimental pop act AU will release its third full-length album, Both Lights , on April 3rd via Hometapes. According to a press release, the album's 11 tracks are a reaction to the time between their last album, 20082s Verbs , and their subsequent lives and careers. It further adds: "More than a mere accompaniment, it's a gleaming mirror. It's an exaltation, an exhalation, a monument of extreme composition, the child of collaboration and isolation, a preamble to a wild live show, a statue intact in the violent wind of art and commerce, and, simply, a [...]

A prominent narrative going into CMJ this year was the surge in the popularity of hardcore music, and at the forefront of that discussion was Sacramento's Trash Talk. Though Trash Talk have been together, and been very good, for a number of years, they pretty much stacked paper at CMJ, from a press clip standpoint. Trash Talk came to embody a city that no one really knew much about - outside of that they have a former NBA fan favorite as a mayor - but what they did know wasn't pleasant. Sacramento is a reputably scuzzy, rundown city, [...]

When Winter hits elsewhere, Fall hits Los Angeles. Little changes, but we occasionally don infrequently worn coats, and complain frequently about the 30° difference in temperature. We fear that it will stay this way, seemingly forgetting that we will likely return to shorts for at least one weekend before Christmas. We yearn for 2 weeks ago with more energy than we dedicate to thinking about 2 weeks from now. Put the future behind us and the past ahead. Stand for nothing, live for me. This month, I took a bit of a tumble during a rousing game of Ultimate Frisbee. And several of those lovely metatarsals you see above were inclined to go their separate ways. The inability to drive, walk, and shower properly have all led to a crazed/frustrated manner towards all things sedentarily inclined. I could be/SHOULD [...]

This is indeed the definition of Monday Mourning. After a brief stint on the unemployment line (about 96 hours), I am heading back to work to start my new career as a restauranteur. Today, after 13 years in the hospitality business, I get the privilege of shadowing a 21 year old server to learn the ropes of front of house operations. Fun! Anyways, as my hours of freedom tick away, here are some cover songs that I am listening to. Free mp3: Appetite - Fiery Ring (Johnny Cash cover) [...]

Early in the first track on Scattered Smothered Covered, the new album by Appetite, Teddy Briggs sings, "songs keep writing themselves" and the resulting collection of music seems to do exactly that. This early lyric is a testament to the sense of musical ease and fluency this 27-year-old Californian creates with this record. Originally conceived as a project to, as Briggs simply puts it, "try and make songs all by myself," Appetite has, on this new disc, flourished, conjuring songs buoyed by a spirit that vibrates with the influences of downtempo electronica, hip-hop, Tropicalia, and the far-reaching sonics [...]

Warn mMe, Right is the first single from Scattered Smothered Covered, the new album by Appetite, pseudonym, of Teddy Briggs, former drummer of Rooney. BREATHE. There are some pretty cool tracks on Scattered Smothered Covered, but nothing to really knock you on your arse (in a good or bad way) regardless I feel, of how sturdy you are on your feet. Introducing yet another single off of the summer's much-loved Scattered, Smothered, Covered LP from Sacramento's Appetite - "Warn Me Right." Tonight, Appetite opens for Blackbird Blackbird and Portland's Radiation City at Bottom of the Hill [...]

Am I allowed to be late on bands in today's cutthroatingly competitive society? Music is good until it's not, and being out there for a little while does not make music not good. Dig? PROFOUND. (I'm really admitting an inferiority complex here.) In my quest to make this the worst-written post ever on the wwwz, I could start talking about food and use it as an obvious metaphor for the music, playing on the artist's name. I really could! But I won't. Instead, enjoy Appetite's (Teddy Briggs) quirky, poppy and catchy music below. [...]
