Last weekend was my grandmother's Celebration of Life. It would have been her 92nd birthday. We all had margaritas (it was also Cinco de Mayo; I had three) and told funny stories about her life. It was a blast, a good closure and celebration to a woman who meant a lot to a lot of people. Upon returning on Monday, I took a trip out to Anacortes and The Business, picking up the new Cloud Nothings LP, Attack On Memory , which served as inspiration for tonight's show. [...]

Katie Swezey Kansas post-emo/guitar-heavy heroes the Appleseed Cast graced the Doug Fir on Saturday—with a slight change in the line-up. Ted Stevens (of Cursive) was filling in on lead for Aaron Pillar, who had been with the band for 14(!) years. No word yet on who would contribute to future recordings. The new energy felt good, and more than a little raw (lead singer Chris Crisci broke not one, but two strings in a single swipe). Their sound was still right on and plenty loud. There [...]

Where has all the post-rock gone? I'd be willing to be we will soon look back on the early/mid 20002s as the golden-age of genre that had little chance of becoming popular. With its obscenely long songs and few-and-far-between lyrics and vocals, it does seem like quite a miracle that bands like Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai ever got to quit the day jobs. But maybe the fact that they were the antithesis of radio-pop's 2.5 minute formulaic entries could be a reason for their success. Kansas' The Appleseed Cast are one of the forebearer's of America's [...]
Sad times are upon us my friends. Emos has begun to close its doors; it even made big waves with the people over at Pitchfork. As we near the closing of the original Emos, we culled our favorite memories of the venue, and we hope you'll share your favorites with us as well. Emos has long been a staple on 6th Street, and as it moves to Riverside, we truly wish the best for the venue and its future endeavors. Still, we have to face the truth, Emos will never [...]

The Appleseed Cast's purchase is as strong as ever with new EP. This stalwart Lawrence, Kansas band returns with 28 minutes of what it does best, namely swath the listener in a dreamlike haze. Fifteen years into its career, the Cast delivers one of its most vital tracks to date with "Middle States", which highlights the chiming guitars of Chris Crisci and Aaron Pillar plus the acumen of the Nate Whitman (bass)/John Momberg (drums) rhythm section. The 14-minute closer "Three Rivers" is a long and winding piece...
The Appleseed Cast is not a band even dedicated indie music aficionados seem to think about frequently. The band so readily slips between the cracks of emo, indie and vocal post-rock, it's almost tempting to label it shoegaze. It's certainly not emo anymore, not even second-wave. And the quiet niche that is post-rock nerds don't hype the band with unceasing praise that Unwed Sailor or Godspeed You! Black Emperor receive. That's not to say the Lawrence, Kansas quartet isn't worthy of acclaim. Its most recent EP, Middle States , is a rare, skilled demonstration of what [...]

The Lawrence, Kansas emo veterans persevere with another mediocre EP. The Appleseed Cast pride themselves on evolving with the times. Their gentle, often fluid indie rock sound has morphed slowly since the band's inception in 1998, from the emo of their late '90s albums to the post-rock of their early aughts experiments. The group has remained something of a character actor in alternative music, however, partly because of their isolated Midwestern origins and partly because of an innately lackluster originality. With the Middle States EP,...

Andrew Kenny and Dallas Green bring their bands to the spot light this week, but it's a group from New York that has the buzz about them. That's right, The Postelles ' self-titled album swings to a 'City' rock pulsing with simplicity and window-opening appeal. Kenny returns with his second album with Wooden Birds . The former frontman for American Analog Set still abides to his former fans by mixing in tracks, but it's the sophomore album Two Matchsticks that should be checked out. From Green comes the soothing rock of [...]

Hospital Ships bring to mind bands like Islands or Death Cab for Cutie due to the vocalists occasionally shimmers of Ben Gibbard esque vocal qualities. The band is the bedroom project of Jordan Geiger, former member of Shearwater and a personal favorite of mine The Appleseed Cast. Full length, Lonely Twin is coming soon via Graveface and a 73 for is available now . Check out two tracks below and the video for "Reprise" after the jump. Mp3: Hospital Ships - Honey Please [...]

One of my favorite up and coming bands. Saw these guys perform live for Audiotree Stuidos a few months ago and was completely blown away. If your a fan of Explosions in the Sky, Thrice, the Appleseed Cast or Thursday, and good post-rock, do yourself a favor and check this band out and their past releases. Rest assured, we're never wrong, and am certain you won't be let down! Their new record Waves comes out this upcoming Tuesday, May 10th, and it seriously may be one of my first album purchases in forever. Yeah, [...]
The role of a producer is often undesirable to many young musicians. The arrogance and pretentiousness among many in this niche leads them to believe their creative power is limitless, and so therefore their songs can speak volumes without sophisticated production and mastering. They eventually learn otherwise, but usually not until their music aspirations appear [...]

The Appleseed Cast Three what-is-this-mysterious-white- light-streaming-into-my-house reasons to head on over to the Bottom Lounge tonight... 1. It feels like Kansas post-rock quintet The Appleseed Cast has been around forever. And the band has seven full-length albums to prove it. Along the way they've grown from that first generation Emo band that sounded an awful lot like Sunny Day Real Estate at times to a experimental rock behemoth that veers more into Mogwai territory on its latest album Sagarmatha with some songs, [...]
Monday, April 11, 2011 Today's Quick Mention: Just want to throw out a very strong recommendation to see Hanna. It's easily one of the better films that I've seen this year! GO. Tunes and words. Enjoy. : Chad VanGaalen - Sara : Chad has been putting out great music for years, so I wasn't the least bit surprised when this turned out to be a song I had to share. However, I was caught off-guard by how simplistic [...]
