We've followed the rise of Brooklyn's April Smith & The Great Picture Show for a few years now, catching her striking live performances from Philly to Austin and listening as her sound has evolved from hearty and hooky indie rock to a more distinctive theatrical mix of sassy and swinging retro pop, raggedy ragtime and what April calls "vocally-driven- cinemelodic rock". With a voice that swoops and soars with reckless but pitch perfect abandon, Smith transcends contemporary borders with a jaunty beat, carnival organ, and jangling guitar edge melded [...]

Back in July, CoS contributor Joe Stahl wrote , " April Smith, with her band, The Great Picture Show , is just inches away from hitting the mainstream beat. Some might say centimeters. She's that close." As it turns out, the April Smith in reference, with her band, The Great Picture Show have a new album, Songs For a Sinking Ship , due out on March 23rd. The 11-track affair was produced by Dan Romer (Ingrid Michaelson, Jenny Owen Youngs) and includes quite the eclectic instrumentation, including a piano, upright bass, drums, guitar, horns, [...]

April Smith , with her band, The Great Picture Show, is just inches away from hitting the mainstream beat. Some might say centimeters. She's that close. Already her music's found its way onto feature-length films, such as the Rob Schneider-led Wild Cherry , in addition to popular television shows like MTV's The Hills and Newport Harbor . On the road, she's opened up for Carrie Underwood, Sara Bareilles, and the Go-Gos, and that's just naming a few. As if that weren't enough, [...]
Hello from Minneapolis, where I have just arrived to some beautiful weather (suck it New York!)! Last night I had the privilege of attending one of the Deli Magazine Best of NYC Festival shows at South Paw in Brooklyn. It was a pretty phenomenal line-up, I have to say. While I missed most of the first act, Mia Riddle, I liked the little bit that I heard. Gotta love girl-powered folk rock. I'm sad
It's that song that's stuck in your head. It isn't the most complex thing you've ever heard. If you were to listen to each part separate it wouldn't be anything too remarkable. But that's where all that catchiness comes from. It starts off with just a few simple sounds. Once you have those firmly stuck in your head, a new part is added. The song isn't made great by complex instrumentation, but from simple functioning parts making a whole. Throw in the right set of pipes and you'll have yourself with a tune you'll be humming for the rest of [...]
