Remember Spirit , the debut album by Apse ? It was dark and delicious and declared to be the "deathnail to post-rock." Animal Collective has done it again, listening to the previews I wasn't too excited but the EP as a whole all the way thru is a treasure. On Climb Up , vocals hang drowsily overhead like a warm haze. It's tempting to stay low where the air is easier to breathe, but the rhythm section spins you around and rudely propels you into the dark. Apse don't write songs; rather, they capture moods of surprising density and texture.
