( email | facebook | twitter ) The fall surge seems to be upon us, so pardon a few hit-and-runs this week. First up is Eraas, the refreshed, refurbished Apse, upon whom we have absolutely slathered praise in the past. They've rallied under a new banner, dropped some of the rock from the post-rock (leaving mostly the post part, and don't take that as criticism). It's a free download here . It's shadowy, slinking, and a little gothic. Music [...]

Yeah, right. CNN's pathetic excuse for a website has its own dating coach. Oh, wait. Nevermind. They don't. They just re-posted something written by Ami Angelowicz at The Frisky. That makes more sense. Unfortunately, what doesn't make sense is the article, which is called " Dating coach's 8 top tips ." These are horrible tips, and they are dead-wrong right from the very first sentence: "Matchmaker and dating coach Rachel Greenwald is responsible for 750 marriages, and she doesn't believe you will find the love of your life by waiting for him/her to spontaneously appear in line at the [...]

Generator ^ Second Floor mp3 Freelance Whales Weathervanes .... pre-order it and get the digital download now! (release date, March 16) Remember me raving about Freelance Whales ? Wow, I'm still listening to their album. It's beautifully, happy, intricate indie music with words that are fun and also meaningful and interesting. I'll admit to you, my dear readers, one of the things that I grow weary of in the indie scene is the plethora of music with just nonsensical, at best, or inane (more typically) lyrics. It seems that if you don't want to [...]

The experimental, ethereal sounds of Apse are coming to a stage near you. The band is currently riding their wave of critical success from last year's LP Climb Up , which landed #25 on Under the Radar magazine 's top 50 albums of 2009. Apse is confirmed to play the Showroom at Piano's NYC on Feb. 27th along with psychedelic folk rockers Damon Moon & the Whispering Drifters and tribal punk duo Dangeroo . Based on the lineup, the night promises to be mystical, [...]
This year, ATP celebrate its 10 year birthday with one hell of a birthday party - the 2010 edition of ATP New York . And as finally announced today, the lineup for the Labor Day Weekend bash is as stellar and ecelectic as ever. For one, ATP New York has handed over the reigns to Jim Jarmusch, the legendary indie filmmaker whose resume results in a rather lengthy Wikipedia entry . The 57-year-old Akron, OH native, who has the task of following up 2009 curators, The Flaming Lips, will hand pick the Sunday portion of ATP. [...]

I've listened to more music this year than any other by far, so making a top 50 list was an especially difficult and time-consuming process, though it was certainly rewarding as well. But before I change it again, I think it's time to start presenting my favorite records of 2009. The following are 11 albums that I feel deserve mention this year but fell just outside my top 50, some getting bumped quite late in the process. I just couldn't let them go without a mention on the blog, so, in alphabetical order, here we go: [...]

Remember Spirit , the debut album by Apse ? It was dark and delicious and declared to be the "deathnail to post-rock." Described by critics as atmospheric and haunting, it propelled Apse into higher levels of notoriety, and fans have been eagerly awaiting the next album for some time now. November 10th was the day, my darlings, when Apse revealed Climb Up , described to me to be their most intimate and yet accessible work to date. Melodic, with more emphasis on electronica, I'm listening to it now and yeah, I [...]
click image to view artist in itunes Sounds like: Grails, Mr. Gnome Download audio file (10-The-Return.mp3) What's so good? If Mr. Gnome had a male singer, they'd sound like Apse . And if you like Mr. Gnome , then the psychedelic, post-rock, experimental grooviness of Apse is sure to garner your attention. This music isn't pop. It isn't meant to sit in the background while [...]

Mayer Hawthorne - A white, thirty year-old soul singer and DJ from LA, Mayer Hawthorne (born Andrew Mayer Cohen) would seem to be an unlikely pick to record one of my new favorite debut albums, but the (almost) one-man band has proved himself a genuine talent with his recently released first effort, A Strange Arrangement . Cohen's croon has drawn comparisons to the like of Smokey Robinson (among others), which is no small compliment, and throughout this debut he uses his smooth tenor to nail a variety of classic pop and R&B styles, which [...]

Animal Collective has done it again, listening to the previews I wasn't too excited but the EP as a whole all the way thru is a treasure. Bleed is a heavy echoed out call and response song that simply makes you feel like your with the band in a bat cave with a cello. HIGHLY RECOMMEND hanging out in this bat cave with headphones on. I found Apse accidently looking for some new post rock but instead of grabbing up the rock tracks I directly went for this looped tribal psychedelia for its [...]

On Climb Up , vocals hang drowsily overhead like a warm haze. It's tempting to stay low where the air is easier to breathe, but the rhythm section spins you around and rudely propels you into the dark. Apse don't write songs; rather, they capture moods of surprising density and texture. Reminds us of: Ride Free days | Sigur Rós | that guy with the Flaming Lips story who never bothers to remember that he's told it to you before Apse: ( Official [...]
![Maserati - Passages - Temporary Residence [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2025136_lg.jpg)
For me, Passages -- an EP consisting of a split with Zombi , three remixes and a new track -- is that rare release wherein the remixes are the real meal, the real deal and the real steal (apparently this guy disagrees ). Not that there's anything wrong with the other stuff. Maserati always come flush with ear-pleasing, post-est-with-the-most-est rock, and they've added fresh layers of prog to their already-throbbing interface. Not to mention the only brand-new cut here, "Do [...]
