We've had some music from Archie Shepp's Attica Blues before on Doklands, but it's the sort of album it's impossible not to return to. It's a crucial release, with its mix of free jazz, soul, funk and radical politics. Made as a response to the Attica Riots where prison staff killed dozens of inmates, it is one of the angriest records ever released. George Jackson was the Black Panther whose murder by the guards prompted the uprising, and this tribute to his memory mixes sass and swagger with some furiously dry sax. [...]

Destination: OUT just turned 6 years old! To mark the occasion, we've revamped and reactivated our "Beginner's Guide to Free Jazz." The main reason we launched the site was to turn people onto this remarkable music and show that, rather than being difficult and esoteric, it's vibrant and immediately engaging. So help us celebrate by telling one of your non-jazz-loving friends about this post and turn them on to these universal sounds. (And if you want to buy us - and your yourself - a present, there [...]

Tweet I love Archie Shepp's music. First, he's a follower of the Coltrane path (the later helped him get a record deal and invited him for his Ascension album), and you can hear a lot of Coltrane in his music. ... Continue reading

Hi Bopperz. Today we're starting off with a jazz remix by Japanese producer Mondo Grosso, aka Shinichi Osawa. In his typical fashion this track bangs hard and is full of sound. The bassline here is real thick, and the breakdowns are real classy. Fun jazzy party tune. Archie Shepp - Blues for Brother George Jackson [...]

There is clearly more to Archie Shepp than I had thought. For years, the only music of his that I knew was the Afrocentric free jazz he recorded in the mid-to-late '60s. It's excellent, and you should get hold of some. Hearing Attica Blues came as quite a shock. It was recorded in response to the Attica prison riots, a event notorious for the racism that fomented it as much as for the appalling loss of life that resulted. And the music isn't jazz, not any more. No, this is a [...]

Abbey Lincoln and Archie Shepp made Painted Lady together in 1987. Or maybe it was 1980. This is a 2008 import released in 2011. Confused yet? The album Painted Lady has a confusing history. The inside of the CD's sleeve says that it was recorded in 1987 while other sources online tell you it was 1980. Release dates are scattered all over, including 1995, 2008 and 2011, but only if you search hard enough. The record label responsible, ITM, doesn't seem to exist anymore and no one gets any writing credit for the songs. The album is [...]

Words by Jacob Barron At some point, it seemed like the powers that be all gathered together and said, hey, let's give December ALL THE HOLIDAYS. And so it came to pass, that December was chosen to host celebrations originating within at least three (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa), and sometimes four or more (sometimes Ramadan, probably others that I'm missing), noble traditions. Blame the winter solstice, if you want, but the point is that a lot of holiday business goes down in the 12th month, necessitating a wide range of music for successful, all-inclusive [...]

It´s just another Wild Weekend as we jazz it up revolutionary style with mr. Shepp, take L Dopa with mr. Albini and preview El Classico with mr. Smith. Plus we´ve got a Cohen protégé, an sixties acid folkie and a new bluesy talent to watch. Enjoy and please do have a wild one. And we´re off in jazz mode with Archie Shepp and a soulful monster from his ´72 masterpiece Attica Blues . Grooves like hell, lamenting in the meantime the miserable fate of activist [...]

Archie Shepp : Attica Blues [ purchase ] "If I had the chance to make the decisions, every man could walk this earth on equal conditions..." On September 9, 1971, inmates of the Attica Corrections Facility in New York State rose up in response to the death of George Jackson , the famous Black Panther radical who had recently been fatally shot by correction officers while trying to escape from San Quentin. LA PREPARATION Max Roach and Archie Shepp Force (Sweet Mao - Suid Afrika 76) Uniteledis : 1976 MR, drums; AS, sax. This exceptional double-album of duets with Archie Shepp helped inaugurate Max Roach's own revolutionary cultural program. Over the ensuing years, he purposefully connected with the younger generation of adventurous jazz musicians, engaging in a series of stellar duets with Dollar Brand , Anthony Braxton , and Cecil Taylor . CONSEQUENCES TRIO New York Contemporary Five Consequences Fontana : 1963 Archie Shepp, tenor sax; Don Cherry, trumpet; John Tchicai, alto sax; Don Moore, bass; J.C. Moses, drums. The New York Contemporary Five barely lasted a year all told, but they recorded five albums that shaped the jazz to come. They were a supergroup after the fact - the stellar frontline of Don Cherry, Archie Shepp, and John Tchicai all being relative newcomers [...]

Archie Shepp: In a Sentimental Mood Shepp's take on Ellington. Recorded August 12, 1965. "In this performance he reveals another dimension of sensuality, of intimately lyrical sensitivity that is also part of the continually expanding expressivity of Archie Shepp. In much of his work, the beauty is harsh; on this track, it as full of wonder and unfolding concern as a first embrace between two lovers." - Nat Hentoff, 1966 The players: Archie Shepp, tenor sax Bobby Hutcherson, vibes Henry Grimes, bass Joe Chambers, drums
George Russell, the man who freed jazz, died last month at the age of 86. If his obituaries are anything to go by, Russell will be remembered more keenly for his contributions to jazz music theory than his own compositions, which will be a shame. Russell, a pianist, composer, and arranger, came up with the theoretical basis for modal jazz, but he made some fantastic music, too.
