In my estimation there is no current band more necessary to music than The Skins . With an energy and charm unmatched, this Brooklyn five piece has revived every bad ass sentiment of Rock and Roll and matched it with a soulful force. Channelling iconic influences that stretch from Aretha Franklin to Led Zeppelin , The Skins transcend genres, creating a universal appeal. Wedded in rowdy guitar riffs, unbelievably soulful vocals, and precise drums, they are a musical commodity destined for great [...]

Pavement - "Summer Babe (Winter Version)" Slanted and Enchanted , 1992 Pavement were never dressed for success. On Slanted and Enchanted , they sounded like they haven’t done laundry in years. Even now it’s hard to tell whether ”Summer Babe (Winter Version)” is a ne’er-do-well savant stroke of genius or a calculated masterpiece disguised in ripped acid-washed jeans. But it’s proof that three [...]
Side by side with the Raspberries , Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Paul McCartney , bands like TSOP , the Stylistics and the Spinners held sway on Top 40 radio in 1974. Here are the Top 10 R&B Hits from that year. Go to the next page to get the list.

I'm not sure how yesterday managed to slip my mind. That's not why I'm writing about it one day late. I did eventually get around to remembering that yesterday was September 11, and technically, when I did, it was still September 10... in New York City. That's one of the beautiful things about living in Bangkok, where it's 11 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. I can remember important days when they're nearly half over and still be pretty much ahead of everyone else back home. Unfortunately, it didn't really matter that it was [...]
You might not recognize Joe South's name, but you've surely heard his music. South kicked off his career at the age of 18 with the obscure 1958 novelty hit, "The Purple People Eater Meets the Witc

Of all the great duos who make up the history of popular music, I can't think of one that's been more influential in my own life than Burt Bacharach and Hal David. They were so much more than the songwriting team responsible for Dionne Warwick's greatest hits in the 1960s: Their songs were the sound of an era, an era that continues to this day and will live on, even now that one-half of that legendary pair, David, who died of a stroke in Los Angeles on September 1 at age 91, is no longer with us. [...]
Like many of our favorite acts, multi-talented Chicago native Jeremiah Jae loves taking to his Soundcloud account to share gems from his vaults. His latest stems from 2010, when he was apparently into flipping classic samples like Aretha Franklin's "One Step Ahead", which was famously flipped by Ayatollah on Mos Def's "Ms. Fat Booty". While Jae's version, "OneTwo Step (Her Booty)", is no doubt reminiscent of its predecessor, he brings a fresh perspective by way of a killer transition and deft chopping. Check it out below.

Aretha Franklin is one of my favorite musicians hands down. The Queen of soul has been belting song after song for half a century now and her beautiful voice stays exactly the same. This women has had quite a career, winning Grammy's, singing for presidents, always being compared to Dinah Washington and Billie Holiday , another two of my favorite females musicians, but her voice was one that you could most definitely tell apart from the rest. I am always trying to mimik her vocal range and do warm ups specifically to her music. I don't [...]

Australian Cam Bianchetti (aka Late Nite Tuff Guy / HMC) loves all things engrossed in disco and the kinder strains of gorgeous techno. As LNTG , his capacity and range over new age disco landscapes fails not to excite, but instead revives & inspires those dormant senses of ours and re-strengthens those grips that made us fall in love with the genre in the first place. Throughout these four examples, Late Nite Tuff Guy takes us into his mind of Toto & Aretha Franklin balances, but always manages to come out the credible [...]

Filed under: News , Music Appreciation Frank Micelotta, Getty Late July and early August in the heart of summer is also the heart of the music festival season. Heck, in the next couple weeks we've got Lollapalooza , Newport Folk Festival, Gathering of the Juggalos and something called Nerdapalooza in Orlando, Florida. There's no doubt that some of the bands (and fans) at these events will make history in one way or [...]

One of our favorite features run by our friends at excellent UK website The Quietus is their regular excerpts from the Rock's Back Pages archive. They recently exhumed an old article from the NME , wherein Nick Cave, Shane MacGowan, and Mark E. Smith held a "summit" at a south London pub . As it turns out, we happen to own this exact NME – we found it for $1 in a second-hand record shop years ago — and leafing through the article again got us thinking about similar great meetings of the minds that have [...]
