Today, Ariana Delawari premiered her (self-directed) video for "Be Gone Taliban" on IFC . Armed with a bandolier of butterflies instead of bullets, Delawari shows her toughness, her passion, her grace and dance skills, and still looks darn cute and lovable. This video should have come with ceramic figurines of her in the orange and her girls in blue (see minute 1:19). IFC concludes that she has the goods that "would make a Taliban's head explode." I don't know if that's grammatically possible but it'd be quite the accomplishment! —Daiana Feuer
In life, it's all about the connections you make, and perhaps no other current artist knows that better than ASKA . The Japanese-born, LA-based singer-songwriter/composer has worked with everyone from Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Spike Jonze (who used one of her songs for his I'm Here film .) Now, fresh off her self-titled debut EP, ASKA shares with the world the video for "I'm A Hunter", which further demonstrates the girl has a mighty impressive Rolodex. The video, directed by Marc-Edouard Leon and featuring [...]
[Birthday greetings go out today to Colin Meloy of the Decemberists ...] Top 5 shows for your hand-holding urges and other date-night needs: ☛ Belle & Sebastian play at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, preceded by a screening of the movie "Trainspotting." ☛ Australian folkies Angus & Julia Stone — who sold out three straight nights at Hollywood Forever back in May — headline the El Rey Theatre. Expatriated Although an expatriate almost from birth now living in LA, Ariana Delawari recorded her most recent record Lion of Panjshir at her family's home in Kabul, Afghanistan. Thickly and densely lush, the songs range from a gothic, jangly blues to a hypnotic orientalia verging on creepy. All are entrancing. Although an uptalker in real life, onstage she wields a shrieky surprise like Caithlin De Marrais. Chesme Siah Daree Lion of Panjshir (Live) Her MySpace and website [...]

Ariana Delawari 's psychedelic folk is epic. Her voluble wail is filled with power and vibrato that's rarely matched. The only voice that comes close to possessing the strength of Delawari's is perhaps that of Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond). There's a lot of passion behind "San Francisco" that keeps the song unquestionably fresh, and it's a sound that populates her debut LP, Lion of Panjshir . Delawari's mark was made between Los Angeles and Kabul, Afghanistan. Ariana mixes a common sound - consistent vocal [...]

Following on from our previous post, we're (tenuously) keeping the Sab Francisco link going - for that is the title of this brilliant track by Ariana Delawari . A track so good that it somehow woke us from our slumbers on the train after another day of same old, same old... A track from an album called Lion of Panjshir . An album released on David Lynch's own label. We could tell you how this [...]

Those dudes up there attended Yale. They're ambitious and reliable. If I were forced to hop in a boat with 9 other dudes for my own safety, I'd be pleased to have these young lads at the helm. We're not as reliable at Citizen Dick, or at least we haven't been over the last three days. As such, our usual Sunday Radio Dick is being hit a bit early this week. We'll hit you five tracks today and five tracks tomorrow. Big things have been going on around our Eastern Campus this week that have forced to go idle for [...]

There doesn't seem to be any embedding option on the David Lynch Foundation website, but go over here to check out Ariana Delawari 's new video , which is directed by the one and only David Lynch . Much of the styles and themes that Lynch uses in his movies are visible here, and (considering how nonsensical Lynch's films can sometimes be) they actually seem to work a little better in the music video format. Also on the website, there is an interview with Delawari, where she talks about working with Lynch. You can [...]

As record labels, bands on the struggle, and fans of said bands know all too well these days, cutting through the glut of new music streaming on the internet is no small feat. That is, unless you get a beloved (and brilliant) director to film your debut music video at what— according to Paste —is a location from his most beloved (and brilliant) television series . DLF.TV and our friends at Flavorwire dropped a brand new David Lynch-directed promo video today for Ariana Delawari , a [...]

Adriana Delawari - Be Gone Taliban Ariana Delawari - Cheshme Siah Daree The Panjshir Valley in north-central Afganistan is the soul of what Afganistan use to be. Ahmad Shah Massoud was given the name 'Lion of Panjshir' after successfully defending against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan and the valley as well as the 'Lion' have become one site of resistance against the occupation of the Taliban... Ariana Delawari's album transforms richly textured songs into glowing hymns of struggle and hope. [...]

Editor's Aside: There are a lot of things that could be researched and alluded to in today's review, particularly the history of Taliban rule in Afghanistan, and more lightheartedly, what exactly a tabla, rabab, and dilruba are musically. They show up as misspellings in my spellcheck. Levity aside, an entire cultural landscape is impossible to digest and connect in a short album review. What's important, dear readers, is that the overall backstory to Ariana Delwari's newest release, while intriguing and powerful, is not the only noteworthy highlight point. This review will discuss the story associated with the album, and even [...]

Linda Perhacs sees colors. The psychedelic nature of reality follows her around and tugs at her pant leg for attention. On Parallelograms , her psychedelic gem from 1970, she captured the waveforms of color through sound, and now she's been called back to REDCAT with Dublab and some of the most wonderful weirdos making music today—for her first live performance ever.
