Cover Classics takes a closer look at all-cover albums of the past, their genesis, and their legacy. It is hard to remember that in 1998, when Mermaid Avenue was released, Billy Bragg was a well-respected leftist folkie, a former busker who had progressively cleaned up and expanded his sound, and he was probably at the height of his commercial popularity. By contrast, Wilco, which was struggling to emerge from the shadows of Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt, had released two albums - a debut that was not fawned over, and a follow-up that was critically adored, but far from a hit. The following playlist includes household names to ...
Pixies frontman Black Francis comes to The Abbey Bar tonight. When his influential college-rock band called it quits in 1993, Francis (born Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV) turned the sudden void in his life into the start a solo career that now includes a couple of 4AD releases, multiple aliases and an eventual Pixies reunion. ... Arlo Guthrie  - Alice’s Restaurant Thanksgiving tradition.
Thanksgiving here on Coffee wouldn't be the same without our annual song!! Download: 01_alice_s_restaurant_massacre e.mp3
Filed under: The Hit List NBC via Getty Images Nicole Westbrook's song "It's Thanksgiving" has drawn plenty of comparisons to Rebecca Black's universally panned "Friday." But the 12-year-old viral video singer has learned one valuable lesson about the music industry: If you record a song about Thanksgiving, it stands a good chance of getting heard -- at least one time of the year -- no matter what the quality. Because while there are plenty of themed [...]

Editor's Note: From a blog post appearing originally in 2010. This is a classic! The album, not the blog post. We have dusted off some of our own all-time favorite albums from our own collection, and today we want to share one that’s perfect for the Thanksgiving holiday – Alice’s Restaurant , from Arlo Guthrie. The title song is of course an American classic – and a song played by many radio stations on Thanksgiving Day. It’s a true story about a 1965 Thanksgiving when Arlo, the son of legendary songwriter [...]
Filed under: News , R.I.P. Steve Starr, AP WASHINGTON, Mass. (AP) - Folk singer Arlo Guthrie has announced the death of his wife, Jackie, at age 68. An obituary released by Guthrie's record label says Jackie Guthrie had inoperable cancer and died Sunday at the couple's winter home in Sebastian, Fla. They had recently celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary.

Last weekend I walked into my local Berkeley coffee shop and Bob Dylan's Desolation Row was playing on the stereo. I turned to my friend and asked if he had any way of identifying what verse we were at - but neither of us could place how far into the song we were, or how likely it was the song would still be playing when we left. It was, in fact, still playing when we left. Later that night, I saw Wilco at The Greek Theatre open with One Sunday Morning (Song For Jane Smiley's Boyfriend) - yet another song [...]

If tribute albums are a coverlover's bread and butter, then in-studio covers are quite often the wine: sweet, dry, subtle, and the perfect complement to the studio recordings which bring one to a musician in the first place. But if I take an arms-length approach to live concert recordings, it's because so many cause me more pain than pleasure. Years of ear training as a choral vocalist leave me unable to appreciate instrumentation which is even slightly out of tune, a problem endemic to the live session, where crowd-pleasing can rush the re-tuning process. Similarly, a [...]

This is Arlo Guthrie very early in his musical career live at Gerdes Folk City, Greenwich Village, New York City, back in 1966. Founded by Mike Porco and regarded by many as the original Centre of Folk Music, (a coffeehouse in Greenwich Village where everyone who was anyone in folk music used to play) you can [...]

We are taking a few days off to celebrate our country’s birthday and if you are an astute reader, you will know this is simply last year's July 4 post with a few different songs tossed in. Wherever you are, take a few moments to appreciate your freedom - and remember there are still places in the world where armed thugs can kick down your door and drag you away just for reading this blog. Celebrate freedom this weekend, and let it ring around the world. You are welcome to enjoy the enclosed music at your [...]

Jeff Fiorentino: Alice's Restaurant [ download other Fiorentino tracks ] More or less immediately, Arlo Guthrie's (1967) Alice's Restaurant came to mind. I'm not sure why: maybe it's because I worked as a chef in a restaurant for a few years after graduating from college. I want to assume that any information I can provide here about the original/Arlo Guthrie is superfluous to anything you can find online. ( start here ?) While you can check out Arlo's original here, I wanted to send you a different [...]
