I must confess Long Arm's two albums are two of my favourite ever to come out and I hope he does some more. You can find more info about him in the links below. ![TENNIS, BODY LANGUAGE, STEPDAD [SUGGESTED NYC CONCERTS]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4091574_lg.jpg)
There are many times when it's wonderful to live in New York City, yet few times are quite as amazing as these next fews weeks, a time when tons and tons of amazing bands come through town before they make their way down to Austin, Texas for SXSW . It does make sense, what better way to build up some hype before the year's most important music festival/conference than playing shows in New York City? With Tennis , Body Language , School of Seven Bells , Stepdad , Craig Finn , [...]

This may sound surprising, but ARMS is one of the first NYC bands I ever heard. The song was "Heat and Hot Water", and the year was 2009 - I was 16. The setting was an NYU dorm room. I don't think I had ever fallen in love with a song like I fell in love with that song, playing it over and over and over again, much to the annoyance of everyone around me. Naturally, I was thrilled when I heard about the band's new album, "Summer Skills," released in November, but upon first listen what I heard exceeded even [...]

In North East China, a fossilized microscopic wing has been discovered. It belonged to a katydid who lived 165 million years ago. Scientists have been able to reconstruct her song from this wing, which also functioned as her instrument. It is the first known song to have existed on earth. We humans tend to think we invented music, that it gives us purpose, that we gave it breath, but music has been used always—if we define always as 165 million years ago—as the only language we have to call out to anyone nearby to come find us. We [...]

ARMS? (No not the limbs), I would relate ARMS to a more straight forward version of Local Natives (they call it lo-fi pop, I guess I can see that as well). ARMS began as the solo project of former Harlem Shakes front man Todd Goldstein, countless bedroom sessions finally boiled over post Harlem Shakes breakup and now experimentation has led to a full band and Summer Skills . Or, as they they worded it: "ARMS is what happens when the back burner bursts into flame." These two great singles coupled with some awesome Daytrotter [...]

I first heard Mitchy Slick while watching the classic film, Julien Donkey Boy. In the wild clusterfuck of wacked footage peiced together by the creator of "K.I.D.S," Harmony Korine, added one short clip that stuck in my head. It was footage of a young Mitchy Slick resiting the lyrics " Black albino straight from Alabama way down south and ya know that I'ma Black albino straight from... ect" The strangely catchy bar stuck with me through the years and when I finnaly heard Mitchy on some real shit I was ecstatic. I felt like an old friend had [...]
I'll remember 2011 as a year with more good music than I had time to devote to it. Because my primary focus is music emerging from SoCal — and because there was so much of it this year — I found myself taking only passing interest in many hyped albums ... and not finding a lot of best in what the interwebs deemed "best new music." So fire me. Many of my favorite albums of the year came artists with whom I'd already developed a listener's relationship. Following are my favorite 20 [ excluding local artists, because I [...]

2011, surprisingly enough, marks the 5th anniversary of Mixtape Muse. For something that started as a place to post the playlists for my little 'ol college radio program, this site has grown into something I could have never imagined. To celebrate, I've created a mixtape featuring artists that have been favorites over the past five years/are friends or are simply new artists I've just recently discovered. When I began selecting tracks, I soon heard a sonic theme that sort of matched the cover art (above) -- which I, oddly enough, happened to pick out before I had even started curating [...]

Well, 2011 is over, and that's kind of scary, but I think I'm more thrown off by the fact that my birthday is tomorrow and that day always seems so far away. None of that matters though, because the end of the year really means year-end list time. I think I'm thrown off by this more than anything else because you've got to go over the whole year and decide which albums rank higher or lower than this album and that album. Generally, these lists seem predicated on what album is technically better than a group of others. [...]
BEST OF 2011 : Songs | Albums (soon) | EPs/Singles | Discoveries/Heavy Rotation | Photos A really good year! The first 40 or so are mega-jams and the latter 38 (Rawkblog loves you, baby) are still jams. I purposefully left out songs by Destroyer because I couldn't decide, so consider Kaputt represented. You can play the entire page with the handy Ex.fm player in the bottom right corner, stream the playlist on Spotify and Rdio , and download everything after the jump. [...]
When we wrote the intro to our Deputy Editor's Top 10 Records last year, we joked that he's a surly so-and-so who doesn't like anything and enjoys nothing. This isn't true. This year, for example, he took a worrying amount of pleasure from the torrent of abuse levelled at him by fans of Five Finger [...]

The guys over at Big Ugly Yellow Couch posted some really great coverage of the ARMS record release party this past weekend at Glasslands. In case you missed it, the epic-pop four-piece performed its debut Summer Skillz from start to finish, and had a lot of fun doing it. Fleeced - ARMS // Buy Charming songs are those that amble along. They wander slowly down the road to their end point, sometimes stopping to smell the daisies, but never to write manifestos or force through any unnecessary agendas. They pleasantly fill the gaps when there's no desire for a particular genre - when there's simply a need to listen to something nice. Summer Skills , the newest record from ARMS (@armsongs), the project of ex Harlem Shakes guitarist Todd Goldstein, is charm at it's most pure. The [...]
ARMS, a New York-based band that started playing together in 2004, just issued the second single for its self-released sophomore album, Summer Skills. “Glass Harmonica” is a dreamy beach tune with an interesting electronic and acoustic sound. Starting out slowly with a bass line and a familiar drum beat, but building toward an almost '70s [...]
