The best songs from Toronto bands in 2012 With 2012 nearly a memory, it's time to look back and recall some of the year's best tracks from Toronto bands. It's always difficult paring a list like this down to 10, but it was even more difficult thanks to what a strong year it was for local music. Give 'em a listen and then leave a comment below telling us what you think about our choices — or leave your own suggestions if you feel there's something we missed. The more Toronto music, the better. [...]

Toronto concerts worth knowing about in November, 2012. November in Toronto is a bit of a trip back to the late 60s / early 70s with The Who , Bob Dylan and Neil Young all passing through our suddenly cold city. Of course there's the usual barrage of up and comers as well — DIANA , Mac DeMarco and Paper Diamond are acts garnering significant attention right now, despite their relative youth. Halloween might be over but that just means you have to look out [...]

D I A N A is a new band from Toronto. Consisting of three members who are: Kieran Adams (You must have seen him drum for Warm Myth and Sarah Harmer ) Joseph Shabason ( Destroyer ) Carmen Elle ( Army Girls ) The band will make their Ottawa debut on November 8th at Pressed . Also playing will be Ottawa's Radioactive Bishop . Details are on the Facebook event . [...]

Yannick Grandmont Until recently, Montréal's Godspeed You! Black Emperor has been inexorably associated with a very certain moment in time, specifically the end of the last century and the dawn of this one. In addition to emerging at a time when post-rock was still an amorphous musical concept which was better felt than explained and Canada was only beginning to take steps towards becoming an international presence as home to exciting new music, Godspeed's trilogy of albums - F# A# , Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven [...]

Decided to go up to Brock Avenue. There was this day party happening. Get this, it was a backyard show/party/BBQ with about 20 acts playing since noon. But they had to play a 10 minute set. How crazy was that? I only managed to see acts which were: Henri Fabergé Army Girls I was overwhelmed with the crowds packed into that small backyard. [...]
![NXNE 2012: Army Girls @ El Mocambo [June 14, 2012]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4339290_lg.jpg)
Started off the night at the El Mocambo. It was the Hand Drawn Dracula NXNE Showcase. I got there for the last two songs of Toronto's Army Girls . At least I took alot of shots of Carmen having the guitar over her head. They did put on a great rocking set! Here are the rest of the photos.

by teepoo I missed Army Girls the previous night, so I decided to show up at the showcase at Korean Taco joint JangBang. The duo of Carmen Elle and Andy Smith, played an loud and energetic set for two people. For a two piece rock band, nothing was lacking! Army Girls- T W I C E Gallery

Frank Yang Last week turned out to be a pretty spectacular week - weather-wise - for a festival. Good thing that Toronto had one. Or four. At least three. In any case, I was focused on NXNE ; anything else going on in the city were just obstacles to be navigated around - literally. The relatively lighter Wednesday night of the programme meant that there'd be less need for club-hopping, though, and one could ease themselves into the festival grind gently. "I'm 23 and I'm scared shitless". That's how [...]

Sofia Stolpe NXNE -spotting happens on two levels: there's the micro, where you pore over the year's lineup and try to figure out how you'll spend the four hopefully-warm nights in June club-hopping and seeing bands new and familiar; and there's the macro, where you see how this year's festival as a whole experience measures up against past years and assess how the event is trending as Toronto's flagbearer in a world where cities are increasingly judged by the quality of their music festivals. Or at least, that's how I look at things. I [...]
![PS I Love You, Army Girls & Try Harder @ Mavericks [June 8, 2012]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4318987_lg.jpg)
It was a busy Friday night, after catching the live music at Wesfest 2012. I headed off to Mavericks for a night of indie rock music. Playing at the show: • PS I Love You • Army Girls • Try Harder Starting off the show was Kingston's Try Harder. The band featured Paul of [...]

It's that time of year in June where I head off to Toronto for the 18th Annual North by Northeast Music Festival . The festival this year runs from June 11 - 17. Still hasn't hit me yet but I am very excited in going down. So why not do a list of what to see at the festival this year. I will head down next Wednesday (June 13th) Here is part 1 for who to see on Wednesday night. [...]

Hey there! You should read this original post on the hill by going here: Army Girls - T W I C E If you're in Halifax and in the mood for some raucous two-piece rock & roll, then I'd suggest you make your way to Michael's on Thursday night where PS I Love You will be joined by Toronto's Army Girls. Our fondness for PS I Love You is well-detailed in the Ack's last post on their new album , but Army Girls (fronted by Carmen Elle on vox and guitar with Andy Smith [...]

Vanessa Heins Kingston duo PS I Love You have a pretty well-established aesthetic. Over there, you've got Benjamin Nelson manning the kit with an impressively nimble brutality while looking bored to a degree that would impress Charlie Watts, and then there's Paul Saulnier shredding every neck on his guitar while simultaneously howling and yelping into the mic. It's a recipe best served loud and live and that's where I preferred to experience them, where it was easier to focus on Saulnier's fantastic fretwork than his acquired-taste vocals which I had trouble acquiring. Still, [...]

Shervin Iainez Rose Cousins is not a new artist. The Charlottetown by way of Halifax artist has been releasing music for the better part of a decade and I've technically heard her before as she's guested on any number of Maritime-born records including Joel Plaskett's, but I'd not heard any of her own material until her third full-length album We Have Made A Spark , released at the end of February. And clearly that's been my loss. It's not a record that stops you in your [...]

Frank Yang Despite only seeing four bands, I like to think that I covered a fair bit of ground - stylistically, geographically, exploratorily (?), what have you - on the first night of Canadian Musicfest . The Friday night stuck slightly closer to home on all fronts but yielded much better and consistent results. The evening kicked off at Rancho Relaxo with Neufovin in all the way from Finland (I mistakenly called them Norwegian in my festival preview and apologize profusely). Besides having an affinity for anything [...]

Katie Sadie So yeah, Canadian Musicfest kind of screwed me over this year. For the past however many years, we've had a good arrangement: Canadian Music Week, as it was once know, runs the week before SXSW and allows me to a) get into some semblance of game shape for a club-hopping festival, b) check out some bands that I might otherwise have to find time to see in Austin, and c) allow me to build up a backlog of content to allow me to keep posting while I'm experiencing taco country. [...]

Vanessa Heins It's gotten to the point where the Tuesday before an album is officially released is as much a day to look forward to as the day an album is actually released. That's because it's standard practice these days to make any record anyone might care to buy available to stream at least a week before its official street date - it theoretically helps offset downloads of leaks, gets the promo cycle revved up, all of that sort of thing. It's a trend I'm fully in favour of. And based on this, it [...]

Raphaël Oullet Who would have thought that the title of Canada's queen of electro-pop would be such a contested one? Just last year, Toronto's Katie Stelmanis-fronted Austra seemed to have the title locked down, having collected numerous accolades both at home and abroad for their debut album Feel It Break . And yet just a few months later, it's Vancouver native and Montreal resident Claire Boucher who operates as Grimes that everyone is talking about, what with her new record Visions [...]
In a freezing cold studio somewhere on the East side of Toronto, Army Girls came together to record their debut EP early last year. With the help of Fucked Up's Ben Cook, a giant scarf, and possibly the motivation of the frigid temperatures, Army Girls recorded five songs in four hours, and in mid-September released [...]
