Photo by Eric Schuman For this month's Key Studio Video Session, we profiled Arrah and the Ferns , the country-tinged four piece that self-released its latest EP, Soldier Ghost , in fall of 2011. In our interview, singer-guitarist Arrah Fisher talks about coming to Philadelphia from Muncie, Indiana; finding her voice as a songwriter; and the affinity for old country music she discovered after moving to a new city. Watch the video and download the Key Studio Session below, and catch the band in concert on March 2 when it plays Milkboy Philly [...]

Last night, Arrah And The Ferns dropped by the XPN studios to record a Key Studio Video Session . In addition to the audio and video, we were able to shoot a few photos. As a preview, you can check out the photos above; the full session will be posted in a few weeks.

Below is an in-studio performance of "Waterproof Gold Watch" by Arrah and the Ferns at Love Drunk Studio in Omaha, NE. It was recorded on November 10, 2011 while they are currently on tour in support of the band's latest EP Soldier Ghost . (You can read our recent interview with Arrah Fisher about the album as well as other things HERE .) Thanks to Philebrity for the heads up about the posting. Arrah and the Ferns And now three reasons to celebrate the big Bears victory by boot and scooting on over to Panchos tonight... 1. Arrah and the Ferns offer an indie rock approach so sweet and full wide eyed optimism that I wouldn't be surprised if one of their songs soundtracks a pivotal scene in the next hipster-chic box office smash that will inevitably star Michael Cera. On their latest EP, Soldier Ghost , the Philadelphia outfit injects a good amount of country and/or bluegrass tendencies [...]

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14 Deer Tick takes all the right steps to stay disheveled yet oddly dapper. Though members of the Providence-based group typically come equipped with the standard beards and other facial hair common for their country-tinged folk genre, they still manage to channel a retro, Don Draper-esque appreciation for suit jackets and nice shades. This same balance between shabby and chic resonates in the group's relentlessly heavy emphasis on guitar-driven rock, songs often wavering between thick, overwhelming chord progressions and delicate, almost dainty, riffs. The opening track of the group's latest album, [...]

On their latest single, "Wake Up," Philly's Arrah and the Ferns lets down their guard and totally embraces a sound they've long hinted at a fondness for: country music. The jangly guitar lines and gang-vocal chorus sound like its bouncing off the lofty ceiling of Nashville's famed Ryman Auditorum - in the best possible way. The song comes from Soldier Ghost , the new EP the Ferns are releasing tomorrow at a Phila MOCA appearance with Univox and Conversations with Enemies. Arrah and the Ferns - Wake Up [...]

Check out the new music video from Arrah and the Ferns for the lead single "Wake Up" off their upcoming 6-song EP Soldier Ghost . The album will be available digitally on Friday, October 14, and they will be celebrating its release the same evening at PhilaMOCA with Conversations with Enemies and Univox . The animation and video was creatively done by Purple Riot 's Kelly Gallagher. Enjoy!
Arrah Fisher and Carl Stovner moved to Philadelphia in 2008, leaving their band and their old home of Muncie, Indiana, behind. But the local scene proved so inviting, they couldn't keep away from music entirely. Last year, a revived Arrah and the Ferns released its second album, All the Bad in One Place, filling out the lineup with locals Mike Harkness (of The Armchairs) on drums, Ryan Belski (of The Divine Lorraine and Lady) on guitar and Buddy Szczesniak on bass. The album is an impressive, eclectic romp of country, blues, singer-songwriter pop and indie rock - including [...]

We hope that you are enjoying drinks, BBQ, friends and family as well as possibly some swimming action on this sweltering Memorial Day! Whatever you are doing as always it is about having fun. Below is a video to help get you in the mood. Our buddy Mike Harkness, drummer formerly for The Armchairs and currently with Arrah and the Ferns , told us about this beautifully done live performance video of "All the Bad In One Place" that they did on top of the OX's roof for Hearnebraska.org when we interviewed him just before [...]
Photo by Daniel Muller Arrah And The Ferns are known for their cute, poppy folk. Wurlitzers, teasing girl-boy vocals, and silly lyrics about pre-teen problems abound. But, after taking a break in 2008 (during which they lost the rights to their name) and the band's subsequent move to Philadelphia, Arrah And The Ferns are working on new material that is darker, more guitar-driven, and less acoustic than their two previous albums. (They plan to release a live recording sometime this summer.) Prior to the band's show at the Sundrop Arts And Music Festival [...]

I tend to gravitate towards artists that sing about geography, whether it's Sufjan Stevens with his states project , The Mountain Goats with his various geographic odes , or The Rural Alberta Advantage's dedication to their Hometowns . This week Bon Iver released the first track, "Calgary" to his excellent new album Bon Iver, Bon Iver , which triggered a subsequent leak a couple hours later. Largely due to his relentless touring schedule, Bon Iver was inspired by places and [...]
From the folks at The Fire : In an attempt to fill the void left by festivals past, and offer a good alternative to flocking to the shore, many of Philadelphia's finest local musicians will participate in the Inaugural Sundrop Music and Arts Festival. The festival includes three great nights of music at the Fire, and an all-day, two stage show and craft fair on Saturday May 28th. Stages will be located at Trios Tratorria and outside of the Fire, with vendors offering fine art, crafts, and food lining the path between the Trios Stage [...]

Tonight Indiana transplants Arrah Fisher and Carl Stovner, who makeup the original core of Arrah and the Ferns , will be providing some local support to Austin's Oh No Oh My. Having performed together for the first time at an open mic in December 2005, Fisher and Stovner instantly experienced that "lightning struck fingertips and songs were born from anxious little hearts of 20-year-olds." Now, a little older and wiser - they've continued their musical journey in our much beloved creative hotbed Philly and have found some new friends/"ferns" [which also includes Ryan Belski ( The Divine Lorraine )] [...]

Arrah and the Ferns is the beautiful brainchild of Arrah Fisher and Carl Stovner, who formed the band back in 2005 and moved it to Philly in 2008. They play a distinct style of music that blends 90's indie rock structures with soaring girl group vocals and the occasional alt-country tinge, like Wilco fronted by a female. Their most recent album, 2008's All the Bad in One Place , consists of well written and superbly executed pop songs, with lyrics full of reference to all the frustrated love, liquor, and regret to be expected of 20-somethings. In concert, just as [...]

It's getting close to that time of year again when indie acts hop into their vans, forego a little hygiene, and descend on the crowded Austin streets. Psych-pop outfit The Armchairs will be performing tonight at The Ox (or I guess you can kind of call it their home). It's a bit of a bon voyage party for the loveable crew as they prepare to hit the road for a 20+ show tour which includes a stop down at SXSW. They'll be joined by buds Arrah and the Ferns who will be sharing in the madcap [...]

Arrah And The Ferns released their debut album in 2006 and broke up in 2008. Arrah moved from Muncie, IN to Philly, PA to start fresh. Before she left the band, they had almost finished their sophomore effort. 2 years later, Arrah got back together with her ferns and her musical soul in the city of brotherly love to reveal a long-overdue album. The record comes out Sept 3rd ["officially/unofficially" ]. You can read the entire "welcome back" letter on their brand new site, here . SHOWS: [...]
illustration by Robin Joseph - Big Tree - The Concurrence of All Things We are expanding and expanding and expanding... We received this in the mail last week and obviously I could not resist that title so I had a listen. Everyone knows any songs that mention the Universe, planets, astronauts, rockets, and words like "concurrence" are cool. Turns out it was less science and Space-related than I was expecting but - you know what? - that's not actually [...]
