Sharon Van Etten Editor's Note: I don't do "Best of" or "Top" lists, but I do like things … as hard as it might seem to believe. I'm going to post a few editorials between now and the end of the year about the various things I've liked about 2011. For me to do a post on all the songs I liked that came out in 2011 I'd have to type for about 20 hours straight. I'm going to pair down the list through a couple of parameters. [...]
After making up the summer mix i came away craving some lyric heavy songs. Those ones that help hold the heart rather than moving the feet. This week is a slow build but it still delivers Stornoway- Fuel Up I don't know how i missed Stornoway last year but i did. I'm on such a [...]

Arron Dean I've been interviewing folks for a long time - artists among them. After a while, it becomes difficult to keep having the same conversations over-and-over-and-over again. Many times the interview process seems like a struggle especially when - at its core - what I want to know is what makes an artist tick and how they craft their work. That's the aspect of musicians that intrigues me. As someone with little musical talent (thus my deejay background) I know good music when I hear it but I couldn't even [...]

With this continuing series of artist Op-Ed's we continue to bring you the undiluted voice of the artist the best way possible: directly from the source. What Is My Creative Process? by Arron Dean When asked what my creative process was, I realized I hadn't a clue. I'd never really thought about it much. [...]

At times during Arron Dean's new(ish) album, MPLS, it feels like if you breathe out too hard, it's liable to blow the entire song away. The South African born singer-songwriter originally moved to Boston to play jazz, then to New York City, but soon found himself in love with the Midwestern United States, and moved...

photo: Dean Levitt Singer-songwriter Arron Dean was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Currently based in Brooklyn, NY, he writes UK tinged folk songs mixed with Americana ad a bit of country. His album MPLS is a travelogue, a musical diary about being on the road and recording the songs in Minneapolis, Nashville, San Fransisco and New York City. He was trained as a jazz player, so it's no wonder that he comes up with original tunings (think: the more basic stuff [...]

by teepoo With his latest release MPLS on the go, Arron Dean shows us that music can be made whenever there is time to spare. Whether he is waiting for his laundry, or on hold on the phone, he thinks up a great song to write. MPLS is no exception. It was recorded in Minneapolis, Nashville, San Fransisco and New York City with people Arron had just met on the road providing for different influences such as folk and blues. Take a listen to [...]

From a farm in Gauteng, South Africa, Arron Dean arrived in the USA to play his first love jazz in the Big Apple, before joining the New York punk scene and then falling in love with the Midwest and recording MLPS a personal melancholic collection of country-folk, inspired by missing his loved ones and "playing to empty rooms". As I noted earlier this week, we don't hold with ordered lists at year's end, preferring instead to recognize the diversity of greatness we hear and rediscover as part of an ongoing process. But in keeping with our ongoing mandate to bring you our subjective best in folk and acoustic coverage, in the hopes that you might pursue our recommendations and passalongs to support those artists directly, it seems fair to note which songs still remain high on our playlist, echoing through our head long after we introduced you to them through the pages of this blog. [...]
Yup, that's with two R's not two A's. Just like his name, Arron Dean is not your typical singer/songwriter. Inspired by jazz while growing up in South Africa, Arron made his way to the US and ended up doing what most people do, drop his jazz ambitions for the next best thing; New York punk rock. After a few years, the crowd surfing waves waned and his band broke up. He then set his sights on Minneapolis to escape the drug and alcohol addictions brewing with his Brooklyn base. His acoustic guitar became his instrument of [...]
