One of the defining bands of the indie rock explosion of the mid-00’s, Art Brut arrived with a style that was very unique for the time and, inevitably, is so overdone today. Their mix of thick-English-accented Sprechstimme and garage rock influenced music (imagine The Hives if they were from Bournemouth) influenced a flurry of bands after them, like The Fratellis and The Kooks . But Art Brut were not only the originals, but the best, with lead [...]
A decade into their career, Art Brut announces their own classic rock status with this two-disc best-of collection. Luckily for the band, the songs back up their bravado. Art Brut's avowed goal of making it to the Top of the Pops has always been thoroughly tongue-in-cheek (art brut is, after all, French for "outsider art"). It's not that the group doesn't have an abiding love for mega-hit bands who captured the public's ear from the Beatles to Guns N' Roses, because theirs is a love of "pop music" that reaches to the bone. The thing about Art Brut though [...]

Below you'll find fifteen, yes fifteen , new releases we've chosen to present as our top picks for the week. Diverse and super choice, no fan will be left behind here. Ready, Art Brut ? Well, most of us weren't. On releasing their debut single now ten years ago nobody quite knew what to do with them, initially throwing them in with the NME-championed New Cross Scene comprising Bloc Party and assorted artrock and scrappy indie bands of little future repute. Thing was, 'Formed A Band' didn't fit in with any prevailing post- Strokes / Franz / Libertines trends, taking self-publicising to new heights of knowing irony thanks to [...]

Check out album releases for this week. So what's out this week (April 16th) in terms of music? Well, for this week, expect new album releases from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Flaming Lips,...
On "We Make Pop Music", one of two unreleased tracks on the best-of and more compilation from meta-pop act Art Brut , Eddie Argos shout-sings the chorus: "we make pop music/ guitar based pop music/ for people who don't like people." The band started out exhilarated by the mere fact of having "formed a band," and that wide-eyed, self-deprecating, unabashed love of rock and its power to make shitty life better soaks through every inch of Top of The Pops , like a spilled whiskey and coke on the latest issue of The Flash . The expansive [...]

As previously reported, Art Brut are celebrating their 10th birthday this year. They've already marked the occasion by prepping a compilation LP , and now they've announced they'll play a London show also. The art-rock outfit will perform at the capital's Scala on 29 May, with tickets available here . As well as this, they're also streaming brand new song 'Arizona Bay' over at Rolling Stone . The 2xCD compilation, entitled Top of the Pops , will be released on 16 April via The End [...]
Unlikely though it may seem, the incisive and persistently self-deprecating British rant-punk clang-bangers Art Brut are about to release a career-spanning double-disc compilation, which they've titled Top Of The Pops , obviously. The collection includes two new songs, one of which is called "Arizona Bay." It's about being in a tiny, non-dangerous earthquake and being convinced you're going to die. Listen to it at Rolling Stone , and be prepared for yelling. Top Of The Pops is out 4/16 on The End Records .

Art-rock outfit and verbose social commentators, Art Brut are set to mark 10 years of "forming a band" with a new compilation release. The double album in question, entitled Top of the Pops , will total at 39 tracks in all - featuring singles, b-sides, rarities and two brand new songs. It's due out on 16 April via The End Records, with the tracklist looking like the below: CD1 1. Formed A Band 2. My Little Brother 2. Emily Kane [...]

They've graced the cover of Germany's Rolling Stone , posed au natural in NME , and worked with Pulp and The Pixies. Now, British indie rockers Art Brut can add another line to their musical CV: 10 years together as a band. To celebrate the anniversary, the five-piece are putting out Top Of The Pops , a best of compilation due out on April 16th via The End Records. With 39 tracks, the double album features two brand new songs "Arizona Bay" and "We Make Pop Music", as well as hit singles like [...]

Jack Featherstone , Max Parsons At long last, Little Boots is finally ready to let the follow-up to 20092s Hands out of the studio and into the world. I don't think anyone - not even Victoria Hesketh - expected it to be almost four years between debut and follow-up, but according to Spin , it took her that long to find the sweet spot between being the "proper songs" she wanted to write and the disco dance floor bangers she was expected to. Still, her fans [...]

Everybody's Got One , the new six-song EP by Bentcousin , is a mess. And I love it. The bum notes and questionable production values make the British duo's ramshackle project all the more charming. On the opening track "Bentpaperboy," Amelia Innit gently croons lines like "I never met a Catholic that I didn't like." The ingratiating acoustic piece recalls the dry wit of Belle and Sebastian. Amelia's twin brother Pat admires a girl named "Susan" and "my favorite LP" on the chaotic rocker "Slade." "I Quit You" is a [...]

by Eddie Argos Art Brut @ MHOW, June 2011 ( more by Amanda Hatfield ) Anyone who has listened to Art Brut knows that frontman Eddie Argos isn't just a musician, he's also a fan. A fan of comics, movies, television, milkshakes...and music. Eddie and the rest of the band laid low for most of 2012, after a busy 2011 with their most recent album, ' Brilliant! Tragic! ' and subsequent touring. But we wanted to [...]

This edition of the MFR Throwback Mix series pretty much sums up my junior year of college. If you can guess the theme, you win a free shirt. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Tick" Awesome Snakes - "The Snakes Get High" Arctic Monkeys - "I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor" Menomena - "Wet And Rusting" [...]
The Wind-Up Birds are a UK pop-punk band, but it's clear that the definition of pop punk varies from continent to continent. Vocal delivery is definitely a touch different, which you'll easily notice-to me it recalls Art Brut in the way it's very matter of fact, almost spoken word. The group's just released their new album, The Land , and it's full of sharp and jagged guitar licks just like the one here. If you're a fan of bouncing punk rock, then this is going to be right up your [...]

Recently I caught on to the Eversons , another great act from New Zealand. They've just released their latest record, Summer Feeling , and it's exactly the sort of album that gets me excited for warm weather. It's got energy, it's got hooks, and honestly, it's got a little bit of homage to a lot of other acts. My first run through, I sort of have the impression that the band's putting their own sort of spin upon Los Campesinos or even Art Brut . If you're [...]
As you probably are aware, the WFMU Annual Fundraising Marathon starts next Monday, Feb 20th (well, you know now, don'tcha?). As the staff goes into this undertaking, the word PLEDGE gets repeated over and over again in a relatively short period of time. After awhile, the word goes unnoticed, yet it's an odd word just the same. We pledge allegiance to the flag, or at least sometime in our lives we Americans have been asked to do so. Our country is certainly enjoying watching the disorderly process the Republicans have been undertaking to determine who might lead the [...]
