I can always rely on my father to recommend a rare and dusty gem from his extensive music collection. This past weekend was no exception of course. We were talking about what might be the best song covers of all time, and he immediately thought of Art Garfunkel's album Breakaway. He then [...]

Photo by G. Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon Here's to you, Mr. Simon. One half of the folk/rock duo, Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Simon, turns 70 day! I was lucky enough not only to see Simon and Garfunkel in concert a few years ago, but it was part of a 2 night concert for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 25th anniversary and the list of performers included everyone from Crosby Stills and Nash to U2 to Aretha Franklin to Metallica to Stevie Wonder! EPIC! Oh, and Paul Simon [...]
One Sunday morning in the spring of 1982, I thumbed through the Entertainment section of the Cincinnati Enquirer and, as I'd hoped, found some album reviews. (the reviews seemed to appear erratically, but, when they did, it was Sunday) This particular morning, Simon & Garfunkel's reunion album, The Concert In Central Park , was spotlighted. My young mind snagged on the reviewer's assessment that the duo had released considerably more good music during their brief career than REO Speedwagon had during their far lengthier one. I was fourteen and REO [...]

In the second part of three in which I revisit songs from 1979 that have the power to transport me back to the day, we'll go back to the summer of that year. We had just moved into a new house which my mother, a woman of excellent taste and artistic flair, turned into a place that exuded both sophistication and warmth. And my younger brother and I attended the last of three summer camps run by the local church parish. As always, I take no responsibility for the quality of the songs featured. * * [...]

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues by subpop .... buy it! Back from his travels far and wide, Mike brings us his review of Fleet Foxes' latest effort. It's nice to have other voices here, and I hope you it gives you all something to talk about, eh?! Look forward to more guest posts from contributing writers. If you'd like to be part of Love Shack, Baby, give me a holler. You don't need to be here in Chicago, just genuinely love music and care about who's making [...]

I've written about my father here before, most substantially when he was in the hospital for back surgery, and I spent a few days alone in his home, paying tribute to the man whose influence most significantly shaped my musical taste by spinning a set of coverfolk from the record collection I grew up with. And I've alluded to his company throughout our time here at Cover Lay Down, especially at concerts and festivals. But my relationship with my father goes far deeper than the musical tastes and listening habits we share. [...]

Filed under: What's That Song? 'The Only Living Boy in New York,' Simon and Garfunkel A dusted red 2011 Honda Accord pulls into a lonely view of a desert flat. The wheels cut hard into the terrain, blowing trails of smoked sand as the sedan sharply accelerates. The narrator opens with the line: "For over 30 years we've been aggressively followed. Looks like we finally lost 'em." In the background, stacked vocals shimmer. It's Simon and [...]
Here's a mix of my favorite new-to-me mp3s I downloadead from various blogs in the last month. I must say I didn't do so well keeping up with the blogs this month. The Art Garfunkel track came from one of Aquarium Drunkard's L.A. Burnout mixes ; the two 1960s Asian girl groups came from the ever-dependable Cargo Culte , and the rest came from miscellaneous corners of the web. For the record this mix is intended to be listened to in order. Stray thoughts: I've never sought out an Art Garfunkel record; perhaps I should? [...]

by Ben Greenberg Listening to Paul Simon's music, it isn't immediately apparent that he's Jewish. He sings "Jesus Is The Answer," on an early live record. Then of course, there's the famous lyric, "And here's to you, Mrs. Robinson / Jesus loves you more than you will know." This year he even recorded a straight-faced Christmas song, and his gospel tinged hit "Loves Me like A Rock" features vocal group, The Dixie Hummingbirds. But upon closer inspection, the man is revealed to be a pure blooded Tribesman. Looking even more closely, perhaps it could have been [...]

It has been a while since the last New York City mix. Depending on how well this one goes down, I think I might have another in me. The photo that illustrates this post comes from a beautiful series of colour photos of New York in the 1940s from the Charles W Cushman collection. TRACKLISTING 1. Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News In what's already been a down season for summer concerts, another big tour has bit the dust. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame duo Simon and Garfunkel have been forced to cancel their summer reunion tour due to Art Garfunkel 's vocal paresis, an ailment that originally caused the duo to postpone the tour in April. A statement on the duo's website says, "The Simon and Garfunkel tour that had been set for July has [...]

Everybody knows the title track, it won song of the year at the Grammy's back in 1971 and the album itself topped the Billboard charts. However, in this fifth and final studio album, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel had started pulling away from each other. Simon had assembled some of this album while Garfunkel was in Mexico starting his acting career in Catch-22 . Despite this the album still showed their partnership at its best, the wounded songs with great healing harmonies. -Tiana from Ride the Tempo helping you rediscover old music [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Art Garfunkel 's hoarse voice wasn't going to stop Simon and Garfunkel from taking the stage for their headlining set Saturday evening at the 2010 New Orleans Jazz Fest . For starters, it was Garfunkel's first time playing the longstanding festival, now in its 41st year. The duo opened their soft set of iconic folk songs with 'Hazy Shade of Winter' and it was almost immediately apparent that Simon was helping his buddy out on the high notes. [...]
