What better way to celebrate St. Patty's Day than to listen to ten different versions of Brazil's "all-time best" song. Easily, this is one of my all-time favorite standards. This was the first version of this song I can remember hearing. It was around 1994. I was struck by how out of place the song sounded when heard with the other tracks on Breakaway. MUSIC NEWS - Simon and Garfunkel are planning to tour together for the first time in five years, Art Garfunkel says. The singer revealed plans just five days after making a surprise appearance at a Paul Simon concert in New York where the pair performed three songs as an encore at Simon's concert at the newly renovated Beacon Theatre in NYC. "Our plan to work together is coming together but it doesn't go through England this time," he told BBC News. Garfunkel, 67, did not confirm if the tour would be in the US. The duo last [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Paul Simon 's reopening of New York's Beacon Theatre last Friday was supposed to be a special event on its own. But when it came time for an encore, the singer shocked the audience by bringing out Art Garfunkel for a three-song mini-reunion. After playing two sets of classics and newer material, Simon returned to the stage and introduced his "old friend" to the delighted crowd. The former partners then performed 'The Sounds of Silence,' 'The Boxer' and finished [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. By all accounts it was a stellar show from Paul Simon, who was joined by partner in crime Art Garfunkel for a few songs. The knocked off "The Sound of Silence," "The Boxer" and "Old Friends." Simon played an eclectic two-set show, drawing equally from classics such as "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard," "Slip Slidin' Away" and "Graceland" as he did songs from his ill-fated Broadway musical "The Capeman" and newer material such as "Father and Daughter" and "Amulet," a collaboration [...]

I saw Randy Newman a few weeks back (review here ) and it reminded me how underrated he is as a popular songwriter. Sure, the songs are all sung from the point of view racists, perverts, rich assholes and generally unlikeable people, but that just makes the more interesting than the "I love you, you don't love me, boo hoo" school of tune creation. Luckily, musicians seem to share my reverence for the man more known for his Pixar ditties than serious compositions, and covers of his songs abound. So here's his most famous album and, [...]

There's a great article in the New York Times about the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin. We've never been, but it's on the top of a long list. In time. In time. MP3: Art Garfunkel - I Shall Sing MP3: Glenn Miller - On, Wisconsin! (For Heidi Bird)
This song is from Angel Clare, the first solo Garfunkel album, released in 1973. I bought this in vinyl and finally in CD. I think this Garfunkel at his most beautiful. MP3 File

In my other life, I'm a middle school teacher; I spend most of my days surrounded by twelve year olds, trying to balance entertainment with mentorship, and curriculum with life lessons. Before that, I taught in a boarding high school, tutored gifted and talented kids in a tiny rural elementary school, ran a before-school program, and did public demonstrations at a science museum. And before that, I was a dropout. And before that, I was a goofball, who needed a little good advice now and then, but couldn't really sit still long enough [...]

Hope no one minds two Covered in Folk features in the same week; in my other life I've got student grades to process and a new term starting up Thursday, so I needed something quick. Upcoming features include the coversong repertoires of some stellar voices from across the folk spectrum; in the meantime, here's a post I've been sitting on for a few weeks, ever since our feature on the solosongs of Paul Simon . You need me to say [...]
