Tonight is the night... The Americana Music Association Honors & Awards Show takes place tonight at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. It is a night designed to celebrate the best Americana music has to offer, and I can almost promise that Kanye West will not charge the stage at any time during the ceremonies. I've already run through all of the nominees for this year's awards. Today, I'd like to briefly spotlight three artists who will honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards tonight. First is virtuoso mandolin/fiddle [...]

I must begin with an apology. I kind of extended my vacation for a few extra days this weekend, and neglected to post a Stagger Lee Saturday. I even had the song already uploaded, and just kept putting it off till it was Sunday morning, and too late. I hope this week of posts I have planned will make it up to y'all. So this year my family's vacation was to the Great American Southwest. We saw Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, The Grand Canyon, and a tiny part of "The Main Street Of America," Route 66 . [...]

Austin public radio station KUT has announced that it's determined the best songs about Texas, as voted by its listeners. Asleep At The Wheel leader Ray Benson openly campaigned for votes on his MySpace page, so it figures that the group would be No. 1. Here's the list: "Miles And Miles Of Texas" by Asleep At The Wheel "New San Antonio Rose" by Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys "Waltz Across Texas" by Ernest Tubb "Deep [...]
OK, so it's not Good Records' National Record Store Day party lineup--not even close, really--but Alrington's Forever Young Records, a personal favorite of our own Noah W. Bailey's, has announced its... Continue reading "Forever Young Records Tosses Its Hat Into The National Record Store Day Party Ring" >

MUSIC NEWS - The man who just can't stop touring and making music, WILLIE NELSON , who just finished a great round of US concert dates with Asleep at the Wheel , has announced more cities to his never-ending tour. His new run starts up today, March 1 in Austin, TX, and brings him accross the Southeast USA, including a seven-show trip across Florida, through March 22. A short break, then resumes in early April, when Nelson hits the road with fellow country legend, Ray Price in Canada. The Red-Headed Stranger will then continue US dates in mid-April and [...]

Asleep at the Wheel : My Baby Thinks She's a Train [ purchase ] My father grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the years leading up to World War II. This was before video games, before television even, and radio was king. Years later, my father could still recite from memory a radio ad for Carter's Little Liver Pills. And the music he grew up hearing on the radio was western swing. My brothers and I may have been the only boys in 1960's New Jersey who had heard of [...]

Man, music doesn't get any more fun than this. American master musician Willie Nelson singing a selection of Western Swing classics accompanied by Texas swingers Asleep at the Wheel - an unlikely union, to be sure. But this union was envisioned and engineered by master producer Jerry Wexler, who died last year. He was able to hear the result of this bit of genius before he passed, thank god. From the first licks of opener "Hesitation Blues" to the closer "Won't You Ride In My Little Red Wagon," this album rocks. Many of these songs were made famous by people like [...]

It'd be sooo great if other established artists used some of their pull to expose people to deserving but less popular bands. Willie Nelson has always been very gracious that way sharing the spotlight any number of different ways. Now he has collaborated with the great trad band Asleep At The Wheel on his upcoming record Willie and the Wheel . Now I haven't followed Willie Nelson's career very closely of late. Still I'm guessing I would have gotten a kick out of all his recent genre jumping. [...]

If you couldn't get out to Farm Aid last fall or didn't make it to any of the numerous festivals touting Nelson on the bill, then luck has come your way. From the looks of things, it seems as if Willie Nelson 's new year resolution read "Tour," because that is what he will be doing for the first few months (January-March) of 2009. Hot off his appearance on A Colbert Christmas , the legendary singer/songwriter recently kicked off a North American trek that will take him just about everywhere. Of hightlight will be [...]

Here is one of last year's two CD-length mixes. This one focuses on country, western swing, bluegrass and folk music. (In two days, I'll post the other mix from '07, focusing on blues and soul.) I had a hard time whittling this down to one CD's worth of music. At the earliest stage, I had almost three hours of music to pick from, all songs on the theme which I loved. (The second mix was a little easier to choose from -- I only had to delete about half an hour from that one.) I'm well aware this [...]
Of all the personal heroes and celebrities I've met in my lifetime, the one that inevitably really impresses everyone (whether their a fan of his or not) is Lyle Lovett. And while I've always enjoyed meeting and talking to people who's music I've admired for a long time -- none of that "Don't meet your heroes" stuff has ever proven true for me, but then again, I might never actively pursue a meeting with certain people because of that rule -- no one's ever shocked me more than Lyle. The guy is the most gracious, humble [...]

I usually don't just throw a bunch of songs up at random, but Christmas mixes are the one good reason to do such a thing. So here's my Songs:Illinois Christmas Mix. The two newer songs are both slow burners; one by perenial S:I fave Chris Garneau and the other by S:I overlooked Benji Cossa. P.S. If you have any of the Christmas songs I've posted in the past from Antsy McClain can you please send them to cbonnell@gmail.com so I can add it to this mix. Sorry for lack of a .zip, I'm surprisingly inept [...]
