I don't know where Baltimore, MA is and I am not sure what time of day TBA is, but it's December 8th now and Asobi Seksu is supposedly playing Baltimore, MA tonight. Now, Baltimore, MA could easily be Baltimore, MD by way of a typo. Kind of like how that "k" in Seksu could easily be an "x" depending on your location in the internets. Logic suggests MA is MD because last night they played Local
I find year-end music lists a great and useful diversion, especially when I have found a common interest with the listmaker. Often I will revisit music that didn't grab me at first listen, or seek out new bands on a listmaker's recommendation. This year I listened to more albums than any year my life. Rare was the day that I didn't put at least three or four unheard CDs in my messenger bag in the morning, only to repeat the cycle the next day. After listening to so much new music, certain albums stood out among the [...]
This is the stretch of the year where basically no new music comes out and everyone's working on compiling their end-of-year lists. I take the time to try and listen to all the stuff that I missed over the past year. So far only a few lists have hit (documented mostly by Largehearted Boy ) and I've been both surprised and not so surprised at the results. Here's a few examples of albums that didn't make much more than a small blip when they came out but are already having a good list presence: [...]
As with any survey, it is the parameters that determine the final product. And so with year-end lists the content is a function of certain limitations. Which is one way of explaining why our list of favorite songs released in 2006 could actually be two lists (but isn't, because, you know, like, who cares, right?), and is tempered with some subjectivity. So the obvious guidelines: the song had to be initially released this year. As such, even though Meneguar 's ass-kicking triumph I Was Born At Night was reissued by Troubleman this year, its original release in [...]

Something of a slow news week musically speaking. A collective inhalation while everyone scratches around for new Modest Mouse tracks, waiting to put forward their opinion on the Swan Lake album. Happy Monday everybody. Listen: Don't Know Won't Like - Guess Who? Ghost Cauldron - Right Now feat. Perilaus Bull Neutral Milk Hotel - ...
Greetings from Maryland. It was time I got out of the city. Last week's CMJ madness continued a bit into this week and frankly, I needed a break. I needed a long drive, a couch, and the lack of sirens to remind that I'm not, in fact, going crazy. Or at least get some sleep. That's always nice. I met my Mom in Jersey yesterday. She had flown in from London earlier in the week and stayed with friends. She had a rental car for our drive down to Maryland, and I called her [...]

As we’ve hit November and the year is starting to wind down, I wanted to give props to some great artists that haven’t gotten attention from Paper Stereo yet by reviewing some of their more representative tracks. I’ll probably most a couple more of these multiple track reviews before the year is over, so keep an eye open. 1. Asobi Seksu – Exotic Animal Parade [ Download ] I wouldn’t say this is the best track on Asobi Seksu’s new album, “Citrus†(that would have to go to “Nefi+Girlyâ€), but I would say it’s the most [...]
I woke up this morning, ready to grab my badge and camera and head to Fader Lounge for a breakfast Red Stripe. Once I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes, I realized that it was Monday. Back to work. No more free drinks. No more bandfest during the day. Sigh. I was a little bit sad. I'm sure the sadness will lessen as the days go by and I start to count down the days to SXSW. Austin is already calling my name. Anyways, here's a mix for you to enjoy. Back to regularly scheduled posts [...]
I've been listening to Citrus by Asobi Seksu a lot lately. It calms me just a bit from the daily storm known as life. (Just writing things like that make me question my mental status.) Regardless, it's a beautifully executed album from this New York band, teetering between noise and melodies with a Japanese edge. Check out a recent interview the band did with Pitchfork and then go purchase Citrus over at Insound . I first heard "Thursday" during a trailer. As soon as I heard the song [...]
Part The Second , In HIGH (but brief) DEMAND today (this is what happens when you spend hours in meetings): Pulp -- Wishful Thinking (Peel Session, 11 July 1981) . Read all about that fateful day here . ( even more info ) Roxy Music -- Angel Eyes (Kaos from Berlin Mix, Re-Edit by Frank Tope & Dean Rudland) . This song has the BEST harp glissando of all time. Seriously. And -- sooner or later, apparently, everything gets remixed. From the forthcoming [...]
"I must have psychically picked up on your request because I've started on that. Nothing interesting will start for a long time tonight." -- Tom, doing a favor for Dave in Knoxville "Let us be like a little lullaby in the background. Doesn't mean you have to start singing along with the lullaby." -- Tom, reiterating the show's new calling policies "Not only are you boring, you've actually created boring characters. Even your fantasy stuff is boring." -- Tom on Spike's lackluster Sims creations [...]
I can't stop listening to today's track. Once this airy and dreamy indie-pop tune gets into your head, you're hooked. "Thursday" manages to be both light-and-ephemeral and upbeat-and-moving at the same time, as lead-vocalist and keyboardist Yuki Chikudate's vocals float over layers driving rhythm and twinkling guitars. Asobi Seksu hail from New York, and bear similarities to both their dreamy, shoegaze predecessors and some more contemporary JPop stylings as well. Their name is actually Japanese for "casual sex", and their songs often freely mix English and Japanese lyrics. Today's [...]

Yes at 8-9am tommorow (although theres always a possibility it will continue on further) I will definitely be presenting the Breakfast Session on Junction 11 . So accept it and enjoy it. I'm pretty bummed that I missed Asobi Seksu in Newport on Monday, but that doesn't mean I can't have an ex post facto post. I don't really remember how I found out about Asobi Seksu, which leads me to believe that they actually found me. It's good female-fronted Jpop from ...

MS fanatics have been circling their rooms in frenzy, distraught that our latest podcast has been held up for a couple weeks. For that I apologize. I will not, however, apologize for quality! Or sucker punches. Kid should've been paying attention. As anticipated, in all its CD-R length magnificence, is a not-so random sampling of the music that shaped the now departed summer. As always, the best albums are represented, the best tracks of sketchy records are liberated, and this time we've taken more pains to represent the changing music [...]

Mojave 3 comes to town tomorrow night (10/13). They'll be playing a free in-store at Luna Music Midtown at 6pm and then heading down to Radio Radio , in Fountain Square, for a show. Svetlana, Neil Halsted and Tim O'Regan are also on the bill. Mojave 3's country-rock stylings are accessible and enjoyable to many different audiences. It's hook heavy and very catchy. I can't make this show though. I'll be in Cincy watching Ben Kweller. Also at [...]
