photo by Jim Bennett ( view set ) What would you call the tattooed, bearded, barrel-chested frontman of the Cincinnati band Ass Ponys who set aside that beloved project to focus on a different one with his girl? A wussy? Why yes, even to his face. About ten years ago, Chuck Cleaver pulled Lisa Walker up on stage to accompany him on a few solo shows, and their chemistry - his wry working class twang and and her high reaching melodious voice - bound seamlessly into this new band, Wussy , whose albums drag country [...]

[photo by nyctaper] I can't imagine that Robert Christgau gets out to many shows these days. But last Saturday at Cake Shop , there he was at Wussy 's first NYC show in almost two years. I suppose its a bit of a novelty that one of the current favorite bands of a legendary music critic is a relatively obscure self-described "midwestern drone" outfit. But Christgau has it right. As the current band of Chuck Cleaver, the leader of 90s underground legends The Ass Ponys , Wussy is a solid guitar-bass-drums quartet with [...]

MP3: "Grand Champion Steer" Between the Ass Ponys and Wussy , Chuck Cleaver's got 11 or so full-lengths and countless EPs and singles under his belt. One wouldn't expect the heavily tattooed Cincinnati songwriter to produce his best collection of songs this late in his already highly-prolific career, but that's exactly what he's done with, in my opinion, the best release coming of out Ohio in 2011. To be fair, Cleaver's not the sole songwriter in Wussy, it's a collective effort with Lisa Walker (guitar, vocals), [...]

Ass Ponys: Earth to Grandma [ Purchase ] In the grand scheme of the music world, there sure aren't a lot of homages to dear ol' Grams. This contribution from rock band Ass Ponys is mostly just a list of the kooky stuff that so many grandma's seem to like to make and give to others that makes everyone else think "what the heck is this and why would anyone want one?". So this is more an homage to the crazy kitch crafty world of dear old granny and her [...]

As previously noted, our dear Ely is currently on tour, serenading the children by day and enticing their parents into ramshackle debauchery by night. Therefore I've taken it upon myself to throw a couple of Friday posts your way to keep things lively! Today, I thought I'd throw one last winter jam on the pile before fully succumbing to blissful seasonality. The Ass Ponys existed in a strange niche somewhere between the Flaming Lips and the Chainsaw Kittens, but (to the best of my knowledge) never achieved any sort of cult status and are only remembered [...]

image from here Ok, so WTF! My iTunes is loaded, my external hard drive is almost all full - where the heck am I gonna put all my new music. Guess I need to invest in another external hard drive. I noticed that the prices are pretty cheap and you can get massive storage - Terabytes even. Ha, Terabytes, that was unheard of a few years ago, now it's possible. A Terabyte (TB) equals a trillion bytes or 1000 Gigabytes (GB). I think I saw the other day an external hard disk that [...]
If there's one movie I could watch over and over again, it will be Empire Records (1995) . It's not an Oscar-winning or any other award-winning movie for that matter, but it has got a bunch of young movie superstars-to-be, a supeeerb boss, memorable quotes, and one hell of a soundtrack. This movie and soundtrack inspired my youth in the 1990s. Oh cliché. So here in the spirit of ushering the new year, I present to you, my entire collection of tracks from Empire Records I have managed to find over the years. [...]

Although they never reached commercial success (or indie recognition), Hum were one of the best rock bands of the late 90's. They were a tight band full of feedback, drone and pounding rhythms. Their style was unique and widely overlooked. 1997's Downward Is Heavenward was their masterpiece, a genuine lost classic. The track, Afternoon With The Axolotls , is a "large" song full of feedback and drums with the vocals weaving between the two. If you don't own a copy of this album, you are missing out greatly. [...]

All photos by Dale Johnson Tales of The Birdman XVI: The Birdman Vs. Bruce Again I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone “like a son of man,†dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet with a golden sash around his chest. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His [...]
