A friend in need is a friend indeed, a friend with dance-beatz is better. The LEONA LEWIS has enlisted the help of the CALVIN HARRIS for her forthcoming disastrous LP #3, GLASSHEART. I say disastrous cause the record label have already shifted the release date, twice, and I've heard five mp3s and they weren't very tasty. The-producer has contributed an mp3 called, YOU'VE MESSED UP, for the LEWIS next LP. Lyrically, perhaps it's aimed at her mgmt team ? Suspect the choon is around the 124bpms, and she-singer won't [...]
Hey Revolutionaries! I just picked up a copy of Black Kites new lp Advancement To Ruins, and let me tell you it is not for the faint of heart. This three-piece hailing from New Jersey plays a loud, bass heavy metallic hardcore that will have you up and thrashing about your room doing windmills. These guys are playing honest and brutal music that you would be an absolute fool for sleeping on this. Download the album for free below and help these guys out and pick up the LP. E. May 2nd The Meat [...]

Fans or Freaks Fans are a vital element in what makes the music business work. Without them the industry would implode on itself, as is evident by the current state of the industry. Despite being such a necessity, fans are a bit looked down on, and not just they way you might think. Everyone pictures big shots in suits treating focus groups like lab rats and devising marketing plans to trick the lowest common denominator of music fans into buying he next big thing. I know all too well that this is going on. [...]

Beware: Assistants in Power Assistants may be the definition of show biz losers , but the job does have its perks. Aside from getting first crack at the CD's and free tickets that get sent to our boss, we are the gatekeepers. We control everything. And I do mean everything. Everyone is vying for the attention of our boss, and the sole purpose of the assistant is to decide who gets through and who doesn't. Before you can get anywhere, you have to be able [...]

I thought for sure that I was destined to be a show biz loser, living a life of "what if?" Everyone tells you that the only way to get into the music business is to know someone or have a chance meeting in a meet cute befitting the cheesiest of romantic comedies. I knew no one. I didn't do internships in college. I hate using network as a verb. I never stumbled across someone important in a coffee shop. I was surely screwed. Should I start practicing, "Would you like fries with [...]

Frank Yang Scottish septet We See Lights were making the most of their visit to Canada, playing three shows in the week - this one at Bread & Circus in Kensington being the last - though from what I'd heard from others, they weren't what you'd call the best-attended performances. And that's a shame because they have a lot to recommend and really, an overabundance of talent. Boasting four more than capable lead singers, they crafted lush and beautifully open-hearted alt.country-pop whose sentimentality and earnestness was extra endearing given the youthfulness of [...]
Frank Yang So yes, I sort of wimped out on the first couple days of Canadian Musicfest , but like to think I made up for it with Saturday, hitting up something from the evening's start to the very end although I did skip out on a couple of very attractive pre- and post-showcase events. But anyways. Scottish septet We See Lights were making the most of their visit to Canada, playing three shows in the week - this one at Bread & Circus in Kensington being the last - [...]

Ian West Canadian Music Week - sorry, Canadian Music fest , as the showcase component has now been renamed - is a tricky time for me, because as much as I'd like to take in as much of the shows on offer as possible, I need to be mindful of saving energy for the big show - SxSW - the following week. To this end, I tend to be very particular about what I choose to see during CMW/F, avoiding if I can bands I've seen or can easily [...]

Okay, Truth: I stumbled across this whilst hunting for a torrent-full of Smiths stuff. And, it's not bad, though it has about as much to do with Morrissey/Marr as it does the Go-Betweens, early, non-sucky R.E.M., and you can probably fill in the likely other references. The Assistants have a new EP, Fiction , out on December 2nd, and the title track is the sort of pop/indie mush (also referred to, lovingly, by some as "Jangle-Pop") that sounds maybe like it could have been on college radio circa 1992. Which is cool, I guess, you know? Like [...]

Music criticism is a peculiar thing. Check out most reviews and they'll usually reference similar sounding bands. In fact RIYL is now almost as well known an acronym as LMAO or LOL. What is it about music criticism that constantly harks back to artists that have gone before? When reviewing the launch of a new food product critics don't mention other products that it reminds them of. Wine critics have a whole vocabulary to describe wine but never reference wines that have gone before. [...]
The Assistant started in the summer of 1999 with 5 people who wanted to make interesting music with very different influences. Because of the varied influences, the band's sound is hard to put into one particular genre. Lyrically and personally, The Assistant focused on issues of political and social relevance. Song topics range with issues [...]
(No Ratings Yet) Loading ... Giu'. Semplicemente giu', mentre tu rimani a [...]

This is me celebrating Canada Day with an all-Canuck edition of Sunday Cleaning. Happy birthday, Canada! You rock! Yah! The Assistants / The Assistants (independent) I first saw Toronto's Assistants last Summer at the shoegaze tribute show I sorta DJ-ed (made mix CDs and hit play, basically) and they didn't make that much of an impression. I commented at the time that [...]

I suppose the commercialized nostalgia of the 80s unfortunately causes us to remember all those plastic synth acts who achieved success through one hit singles and predictable hooks, making the accomplishments of truly impacting bands like The Smiths, R.E.M., and The Go-Betweens go by unfairly overlooked. Sure, all three of those bands maintain an overwhelming fan base and are given numerous nods from contemporary bands who proclaim them as vital influences, but it remains that modern media remains largely focused on the 80s as a decade of has-beens and formulaic approaches, instead of the artists who actually achieved success to [...]
