A couple weeks back, I attended the Undergraduate Composers Collective 3rd Annual Winter Concert here at Princeton. I will never cease to be impressed by the talents my peers have - I can't imagine having the compositional skills some of these students have, never mind having the time to compose while juggling schoolwork. While several of the composers had very impressive pieces - Rhodes scholar DiBerardino's Sasco Creek was simultaneously mind-melding and face melting - the piece that stuck with me was the concert's first. Hana Shin '13 composed an impressive Tango entitled Los Momentos. While sections were [...]

Welcome to Argentina week on Musical Pairings. If you've read any of our posts last month, you know that Kasey and I were away on our honeymoon in Argentina. And in honor of our honeymoon, we are going to highlight food and music that we feel is representative of our experience in the three different regions of Argentina we visited: Buenos Aires, Mendoza, and Salta. As you can imagine, we have a lot of great food and music to share from our adventures there. For my part, I searched far and wide to uncover [...]

The time has come! Summer is upon us, and for me, as a blogger, it can only mean one thing: Time for the annual summer mix! However, this year's will be quite different from the previous ones, hence its appearance here instead of the main blog. This time around, I made it with a clear theme in mind: To create a soundtrack for a fantastic summer getaway fantasy. Exotic locales, improbably blue skies, palm trees & white sands... steel drums. You name it all. Summer Getaway is a concoction of [...]

Filed under: Around the World For a guy who comes off as not verbally oriented, Chango Spasiuk sure got chatty last week toward the end of a show at the Getty Center' s Harold M. Williams Auditorium, high on a hill overlooking Los Angeles' West Side. The Argentine accordionist had gone through nearly 90 minutes leading his three-man band with nary a word, save for a few thank yous in a tentative, if heartfelt, English to the appreciative crowd. The monkish quietness, enhanced by the blissful-mystic countenance [...]
Astor Piazzolla Carlos Gardel (or what I listen to everytime I take a bath):

Painting: Marie Laurencin. Apollinaire et ses amis, 1907. They say, that inside the arctic circle, on summer nights the sun does not set. They call it the midnight sun. Astor Piazzola - Milonga del Angel Nuevo Tango: Hora Cero (American Clavé/ 1986) Anibal Troilo y Roberto Grela - La trampera Anibal Troilo y Roberto Grela (1962) Julio de Caro - Boedo Julio de Caro:100 años (1928) [...]

Mambo No. 5 may get all the press, but don't dismiss Tango No. 9 too quickly. The Bay Area quartet has just released their third CD, entitled Here Live No Fish . They're billed as "cutting edge tango," but not in the way of Gotan Project and the like. No electronics here, just sharp edged pieces played on traditional instruments (well, mostly. Is trombone a traditional tango instrument?). The band is: Catharine Clune - violin Isabel Douglass - accordion & bandoneon Greg Stephens - trombone Joshua Raoul [...]

After the dominant performance in the Group Round and with "The Hand Of God" as personal cheerleader, I figured Argentina was a sure thing for the Final. But always beware playing the home side! Astor Piazzolla was the master...
