It's official - the CD is dead. We surely aren't the only ones who have hooked up some decent speakers to our computer to turn it into an all-inclusive mp3 jukebox. The advantages are obvious. There's none of the hassle of flicking through spines of plastic cases, no scratched discs to worry about, no need to spend hours on manual alphabetisation. All it takes is a click of the mouse and Dylan, Bob is your UNKLE. Nevertheless last weekend, while [...]
A new Death Cab for Cutie album already? New No Age? dEUS? You gotta love April Fools Day, a time when the trick is really on the early leakers. The message boards are ablaze right now with fake leaks from the most anticipated albums, and as a result the would-be early adopters sully their playlists with Rick Astley's greatest hits in disguise. Apparently, someone even went through the trouble to record songs that vaguely sound like DCFC and post them as such. I hope those in record label sales departments are able to take a moment away from revising their [...]

Great Overlooked Albums #3 Astrid - Play Dead Whereas nowadays the likes of Sons & Daughters and Camera Obscura see their wistful indie-pop on fashionistas' must-have lists, their fellow countrymen Astrid didn't have it so easy in their heyday at the turn of the century. Headed by frontmen Charlie Clark and William Campbell, Astrid had a pop sensibility that in any right-thinking society would've seen them propelled onto any radio playlist worth its salt. Debut album Strange Weather Lately was [...]

Astrid (Williamson, not to be confused with Astrid the band) has released three solo records but two of them have gone entirely unnoticed by me - and probably the world at large. The first time I heard Astrid singing was when she was in one album wonders Goya Dress. They released Rooms , which was produced by John Cale, on Nude records in 1996 and disbanded that same year. A few years later, fellow band members Terry De Castro and Simon Pearson went on to join David Gedge-fronted Cinerama and Astrid went solo. Goya [...]
