Welcome to the second installment of the Musical Pairings "history of pop music" series. As I mentioned with the first installment ( chillwave ), I plan to make this an ongoing series exploring the history of pop music. I plan to research various genres and sub-genres of pop music throughout modern history and summarize what I learn. These will tend to be relatively longer posts, so if you are not interested in reading about the history of pop music - you may just want to skip ahead to the mix at the bottom of the post. [...]

More coverage of the start of the U2 tour, with the Guardian reading the Spanish press , who seem bedazzled by Bono's wiles: Spanish reviewers were overwhelmed by the "rock power" display and struggled desperately to interpret the message in a show that featured astronauts, a video of Desmond Tutu, football, and, significantly, a Michael Jackson tribute, with Bono dedicating Angel of Harlem to the King of Pop, before playing Man In the Mirror and Don't Stop Till You Get Enough. "This is rock designed to move both mountains and consciousnesses," concluded El Periódico newspaper. [...]
Well, that's going to piss off Julian Cope - Ian McCulloch is getting to space before him : Echo & The Bunnymen are set to launch a copy of their 1984 album Ocean Rain into space. NASA astronaut Timothy Kopra is set to take a copy of the classic album, his favorite record, with him when he blasts off to the International Space Station on June 13. Somewhat surprisingly, Yahoo Music News implies that NASA are somehow just part of Warners marketing machine: The mission ties in with a boxed-set reissue [...]

Is this the instrumental techno soundtrack that would accompany an epic voyage into outer space? I bet the crew are wearing metallic space boots and technicolour space suits. And there is a mirror ball on the roof of their retro space ship. Holy shit I want to be an astronaut when I grow up. The tracks are from Europa, which is Optimus Prime's fourth album, conceived around 2003 and realised in 2008. The electronic artist from Belgrade, Serbia says it is vaguely inspired by Europa, the mysterious satellite of the planet Jupiter. It reminds [...]

Here is some more new K-OS from the upcoming album which I think is titled Yes . Someone correct me if I'm wrong. K-OS is a wild dude so you can expect a little bit of everything on his album. This song is nuts. Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing yet. Might need to give this one a few more listens before making up my mind. Check it out. K-OS - Astronaut PigeonsandPlanes

3 new tracks leaked from one of my favorite artist...K-os...all of these tracks reflect K-os's constant high artistic caliber...hes one of those artists that really plays in his own field musically... The tracks are from K-OS's new album 'Yes!' scheduled for a March 09' release. K-OS - Astronaut K-OS - The Avenue K-OS - Zambony

Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner, and David Niven starred in 55 Days at Peking , a 1963 film about China's Boxer Rebellion of 1900. Sammy Hagar, an avid boxer in his youth, became known for rebellion with "I Can't Drive 55," his flip of the bird to the double-nickels that became an MTV staple in 1984. I won't venture a guess as to how Charlton, Ava, and David would have fared, but it's a good thing Sammy wasn't born in Victorian England, where the Locomotive Act—the world's first speed limit—made it illegal to drive a car (known then as a [...]

Trojan Records was founded in 1967 by Jamaican-English producer Lee Gopthal as something of a sister label to Chris Blackwell's Island Records. It became one of the best-known and successful reggae labels, but it also bought out several independent Jamaican labels and ended up with a pretty good ska and rock-steady back catalog. In 1972, it went through these archives and put out a fantastic (if somewhat inaccurately-named) compilation, The Trojan Story . Although the liner notes were somewhat sparse and the sound rough, you couldn't want a better overview [...]

For those of you who crushed on The Field as we did here at ductw, you'll probably love Coralcola . Hypnotic loops, subtle variations, the dudes from Massachusetts do a sweet job digging further what their sweddish brothers initiated some times ago. The flashy tracks immediately appeal your ear and will definitely lead your legs towards a rich/joyful dance/trance. As you're likely get bored of it all before the 100th listening, go ahead and have fun soon. First EP will come out in April. Coralcola - Heath Ledger Astronaut - darkest [...]
Our main man Steven was packing for a trip to the Lake District last week and he asked us if we wanted him to bring us a sheep skull. Apparently there are many of those over there, as a consequence... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit http://20jazzfunkgreats.blogsp ot.com for full links, other content, and more! ]]
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - A NASA astronaut accused of trying to kidnap a romantic rival for a space shuttle pilot's affections was charged with attempted first-degree murder Tuesday and will remained jailed. '' The intent was there to do serious bodily injury or death ,'' Orlando Police Sgt. Barb Jones, referring to a new steel mallet, knife, rubber tubing and large garbage bags that police found in Lisa Marie Nowak's possession. Nowak, a 43-year-old Navy captain and married mother of three, had already been charged with attempted kidnapping, attempted vehicle burglary with battery, destruction of evidence [...]
