If you're a fan of Brazilian music, look no further than Loronix - Music From Brazil , an indispensible music blog that specializes in "forgotten music not commercially available." It's got over 1500 lost classics on it and well worth checking out. Here's a sampling of a couple of classics. O Sonho - Airto Moreira w/ Flora Purim Berimbou - Astrud Gilberto Music [...]
Wesley Chapel Church Hilliard, Ohio Astrud Gilberto - Fly Me To The Moon
As you've probably guessed by now, I'm an Astrud Gilberto fan. This song and her voice are just perfect for a day like today. MP3 File

Beautifully, I heard it from Tim Hardin. So sang Nicolai Dunger - no slouch himself - on "Tribute to Tim Hardin ." It's a wonder that more aren't paying tribute. There's Okkervil River , of course, the band who based their breakthrough album on Hardin's "Black Sheep Boy." It took these golden endorsements for me to seek out the overlooked '70s singer/songwriter, and my God. AllMusic says Tim Hardin 1 isn't his best album; I'd believe them if it were possible for albums to be better than this one. [...]

The first in a series of album and single reviews I've been meaning to do since April. For one example of what's kept me busy in-between, check out my feature on Digitalism , now up on RA . Now that demand for lounging jazz/exotica house is hovering above "straight-to-the-discount bin," Dimitri From Paris has got a bit of time on his hands. But rather than performing a stylistic U-turn and releasing a minimal jazz house single, sampling the dust on the crawlspace section of his vinyl collection, ("I swear, if you listen [...]

Astrud Gilberto: Brazilian Tapestry [1971] from Gilberto with Turrentine Featuring Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone. Arranged by Eumir Deodato, adapted from "Mulher Rendeira" (a traditional Brazilian melody?) I want to rule another cut from this album and do more in-depth commentary later, but for now, enjoy this exhilirating sonic adventure, and note the breakneck triangle part and Deodato's 5-star arrangement. Also, can any Portuguese speakers in our audience tell me what this song is about? P.S. To J.S., who just left [...]

This summer is going by with the quickness. It's hard for me to believe that the event I've been basing the whole summer on -- next weekend's Lollapalooza concert in Chicago -- is just around the corner. Since it's the only real vacation I've planned, it kind of bums me out that, considering how fast the rest of this season has gone by, it will soon be over. I have mixed emotions about summer. While I have great memories of family road trips to the East Coast and endless days at Elmwood Pool in [...]

This, this is great. For You Can Call Me Betty's 100th post, I can sit here just in my shorts it's so hot, the football on the telly right next to me, and I get to post about Brazil. As football posts go, it doesn't get much more exciting: in the words of Mugatu, they're so hot right now - Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Adriano and, yes, Fred made the squad, the samba boys are still (as every year) the hottest property in football - I wish I could incoporate Ronaldinho's band in there, but try as I might, they're too busy [...]

In the spirit of staying under the covers, here's one of the most bizarre song renditions I've ever heard. Astrud Gilberto, original singer of "Girl from Ipanema," has several solo albums (all quite good); on 1967's Beach Samba , she covered The Lovin' Spoonful's "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice," which would be great except for the fact that the song is a duet --- with her very young child. It's unbelievable cute, of course, but so much for taking the song seriously. Astrud Gilberto - "You Didn't Have To [...]
