No one buys albums anymore, goes the music industry truism. And yet, for all that the format's commercial viability may or may not be on the wane, sitting and listening to a great album from start to finish is one of the greatest pleasures that music can bring. Flavorwire recently got to thinking about how one might build a record collection if you really only did buy one record a year. So here's the result of our thought exercise: 50 albums you really should own, one a year from 1963 until the present day. Yes, of course this mean things [...]

Cedric Bixler-Zavala (The Mars Volta, At The Drive-In) forma nueva banda Cedric Bixler-Zabala , ex integrante de The Mars Volta y At The Drive-In , ha puesto en marcha un nuevo proyecto.

Cedric Bixler-Zavala, formerly of The Mars Volta and At The Drive-In, has launched a brand new project. Zavalaz - which is just Zavala with an extra z - also features guitarist Dan Elkan (Them Hills, Broken Bells), drummer Gregory Rogove (Megapuss), and bassist Juan Alderete de la Peña (The Mars Volta, Racer X). They'll hit the road together next month for a series of shows along the West Coast. There are also plans for an album, which Zavala described as featuring "lots of desert ballad space jams, lots of harmonies, lots of lap steel [...]
Having read ALLEN GINSBERG’s Howl maybe a hundred times, my inner guts still have convulsions when I read "Carl Solomon! I’m with you in Rockland". Call me old-fashioned, but for me a singer/songwriter record should hurt too. It should make you almost cry and let you feel the burden of the weight of the world. Last week, we amused ourselves with a thought experiment that was doing the rounds on Tumblr — marking 4/11 by picking out the best songs in our iTunes library that were precisely four minutes and 11 seconds long. It turned out that there were heaps, and the idea got us thinking: when better to do something similar than 4/20? So we thought we'd limit ourselves to making our annual stoner mixtape for today out of songs that are precisely four minutes and 20 seconds long. (Disclaimer: these songs are all 4:20 on our iTunes [...]

Yes, this Saturday is 4/20, but if you can detach yourself from the bucket bong, it's also Record Store Day. The annual celebration of independent record stores has grown into quite an industry, and as ever, there's a heap of awesome-looking releases to trawl through once you've fought your way through the crowds and thrown enough judicious elbows to make your ways to the crates of vinyl — so much so, in fact, that the selection can be somewhat overwhelming. Never fear, though, because we've sifted through the list of this year's RSD exclusives to [...]

After his last column on why he dislikes guests lists so much proved to be so popular, we asked former Bastions drummer, Daniel Garrod , if there was anything else he fancied getting off his chest/putting in the firing line. We didn't expect him to turn his attention to Record Store Day , but hey, here's his column... Two years ago, almost to the day, I got a call from my then-guitarist who sounded like he was going to stab me in the throat... [...]

It’s Friday afternoon, which means that we're off to see a celebrity psychic in a few hours (no, really), and also that we're going back through all the new music we heard over the last few days to pick out our ten favorite tracks of the week. This week we warmed slowly to the new Deerhunter single, took substantially less time to love the new Mykki Blanco track, thoroughly enjoyed BEAK> covering Pink Floyd, got all woozy to Maria Minerva, discovered Manics-sampling pop from Istanbul, remembered why we liked Balam Acab, and more. All these tracks await you — get [...]

Even though probably close to 65 billion remixes are made each day (scientific fact), it's always exciting to see what The Field will do to whatever he gets his hands on. His method is usually ... read more

The Field lends his minimalist hand to this rendition of At The Drive-In's hit "One Armed Scissor." While the original is one of the best ways to open an album - intense immediacy, a battle cry for the triptych of urgency that kicks off Relationship Of Command - the Field's subversion of it into a muted version of itself with sporadic fairy-dust synths and stripped-down percussion is just another way to introduce what's to come: a slow burn that builds on itself over the course of nine minutes. The continuously added layers may never explode into ATDI bombast, [...]

The White Stripes, The Flaming [...]

By David Beech March 21, 2013 At the Drive-In are more than just a band; they're a legacy unto themselves. Over the course of eight years and three albums (nobody said it was a long legacy) they managed to burn so bright, so intensely that they forever left a scorch mark on the post-hardcore genre that can't ever be undone. After a distinctly cliché break-up in 2001, members went on to form The Mars Volta and Sparta before their 'indefinite hiatus' finally came to an [...]

It's Mixtape March here at NH7.in and Captain Awesome is back. Captain Awesome’s mission is to save the world, one mixtape at a time. Dear Captain Awesome , I have a friend (pictured) whose car CD collection only has one CD - 9 Lives by Aerosmith. Sure, that's a great album, and it says a lot about his taste in music, but he really needs some new music to listen to and keep up with the times. His favorite artists are [...]

Recorded over the past year, splitting time between their new home of Los Angeles and Sonic Ranch (Animal Collective, Beach House, At the Drive In, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), the bliss-duo Houses are set to release their second album, A Quiet Darkness on April 15th via Downtown Records. Ahead of the release, the pair have unveiled the wonderfully carefree video for the first song on the album,‘Beginnings’, directed Dan Monick , capturing a moment of pure joy. Watch it below....Makes me dream of summer holiday road-trips. Click here to view the embedded video.
Almost 12 years after disbanding, At The Drive-In' s legacy seems defined as much by the epic manner in which the El Paso prog punks flamed out as it is by the propulsive catalog of music they left behind them. And make no mistake, ATDI blitzed through the mainstream public consciousness like a meteor in late 2000. Relationship of Command was one of a small handful of records that helped redefine mainstream rock and roll for the new millennium, and the band's aggressively earnest live show only further built up their already sizable underground buzz. And then [...]
