Since We've Been Wrong Ad aprile il nostro Zago ci aveva informati del nuovo album dei The Mars Volta , eclettica e multietnica band capitanata da Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez e Cedric Bixler Zavala , rispettivamente ex chitarrista ed ex cantante della band At The Drive In . Ed ecco quindi il video di Since We've Been Wrong , primo estratto dell'album Octahedron , uscito il 19 giugno scorso. Il brano è una specie di ballad molto sottile e delicata, [...]
Every time I review a new Mars Volta album (aka once a year), I inevitably know what most professional critics are going to say about it. Overblown, impenetrable, pointless jam band dreck is the typical response, especially if you're listening to Pitchfork. But I argue that Cedric Bixler-Zavala's unique, thesaurus-referencing lyrical style (or just try and pronounce half the band's song titles) and some of the prog-rock psychedelic excursions the band goes on are not only fascinating at many turns, but downright brilliant. When facing music this noodling and obtuse, it's a fight or flight response, and apparently most critics [...]

The Mars Volta - Octahedron Release date: June 23, 2009 [ amazon.com ] I don't like this because it's possibly the product of a Rodríguez-López/Bixler-Zaval a coke binge/late night burrito run, and also because it's not the At The Drive-In cover for their new album after reforming. I went there for all the right reasons.

Back in 2004, the formidable trio of Conor Oberst, Jim James and M. Ward teamed up for a tour they dubbed Monsters Of Folk . Each artist delivered a solo set, where they often interpreted each others material, that often culminated with all three on stage at the end for some spirited covers and a mixed bag of the artists' tunes. Earlier this year news surfaced that trio had plans to collaborate and record an album together. Well, the band's debut effort now has a release date and will hit store shelves on September 22. [...]
It's been nearly ten years since Texas rockers At the Drive-In released their magnum opus Relationship of Command . And for those of us who really never got into The Mars Volta, the band singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez formed after AtD-I broke up, it's been a long decade indeed. But, NME reports , according to Bixler-Zavala, the group is in reunion talks. And honestly, the band's breakup was so intense and well-publicized, the rancor between members seemingly so all-consuming, that this comes as something of a surprise. "We've been making amends [...]
Call it the latest in a long-line of inevitable reunions - At The Drive-In may be satiating my wish to get back together, reports ChartAttack.com: Former At The Drive-In frontman and current Mars Volta singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala hinted that an ATDI reunion may be his next on his agenda in a recent interview with Drowned In [...]

It's no secret that we were pretty amped and hopeful about an At the Drive-In reunion when Cedric Bixler-Zavala spoke favorably about the possibility. Needless to say, it was a momentous day. However, the following words from former ATDI guitarist, Sparta frontman and current Sleepercar frontman Jim Ward are a good bit less optimistic and enthusiastic than Bixler-Zavala's statement. When asked about the chances of getting the band back together, here's what Ward told Buzzgrinder via email: [...]

It seems that it COULD be a possibility according to their former singer, Cedric Bixler-Zavala! Spilling the beans to Drowned In Sound, Bixler-Zavala said, ""We've been making amends with a lot of the members and having some really good talks with them...I wouldn't mind it [a reformation]. It might happen, we just have to iron out a lot of personal things. A lot of it we've dealt with already and I've apologised for a lot of things I've said and the way it ended... we'll see what happens." Now THIS would be amazing!

Tabiri caizse, The Mars Volta 'nın annesi At the Drive In , sahnelere geri dönebilirmiş. Cedric Bixler Zavala , bir söyleşi esnasında, bu olaya yeşil ışık yaktığını açık etmiş. Zaten neden olmasın ki ?

Here's what Cedric Bixler-Zavala had to say about an At the Drive-In reunion during an interview for Drowned in Sound: Y'know, it might happen, we just have to iron out a lot of personal things. A lot of it we've dealt with already and I've apologised for a lot of things I've said and the way it ended... we'll see what happens. Eat that, doubters! Now I have to go change my pants. At the Drive-In - Hulahoop Wounds [...]
It's time for the annual At The Drive-In reunion rumor. This time around, thank Cedric Bixler-Zavala, who did absolutely nothing to downplay the possibility of the band's return in a recent interview with Drowned in Sound . "Y'know, it might happen, we just have to iron out a lot of personal things," Bixler-Zavala explained. "A lot of it we've dealt with already and I've apologised for a lot of things I've said and the way i ended…we'll see what happens." We'll see what happens indeed. In the meantime, Cedric Bixler-Zavala's current outfit, The [...]
A long time ago some people got really smart and started a band called At the Drive In. They went on to make really great music. I sometimes wonder if they could have been the Jordan and Pippen of Prog Rock. But no, they went the Shaq & Kobe route…before they won three titles no less. At the Drive In and became the Mars Volta and Sparta. Both have gone on to critical acclaim. Wooooh. At the Drive In was the best thing they'll ever do and I hope it haunts their dreams at night. And not with friendly ghosts. [...]

Since we're discussing the merits of The Mars Volta and their ability to make us do sinful things, how about we all go and check out the new song they just posted from their upcoming album, Octahedron ? It's called Since We've Been Wrong and it's actually a semi-comprehensible love song. I'm beginning to wonder if someone replaced Cedric Bixler-Zavala's brain with one of the dudes from that other band that rose from At The Drive-In 's ashes or something.

There will be much more piss and many more pairs of wet jeans come August, when central Pennsylvanian punkers, Pissed Jeans , release their third full-length King Of Jeans via Sub Pop on the 18th. This will be the band's second long-player for the Seattle label and first with producer Alex Newport, who's done work with equally concussive bands like At The Drive-In, The Locust and Sepultura. Just peed our collective corduroys! Because we're excited!

Now I promise not to make this another one of those "man I wish Mars Volta would break-up so At the Drive-In would get back together" type of posts. I like Mars Volta , I really do. Well at least I used to a few years ago when they still put out listenable material... I'm giving you "Invalid Litter Dept." from the incomparable 2000 album Relationship of Command because it's always been one of my ATDI favorites since I first heard the album. It also marks the bands last effort together before all shit broke [...]
