If you never come across the Second Hand Marching Band before, even if you have and you haven't heard this song before then you might be in for a shock. The SHMB are a large collection of musicians who play uplifting folky big band pop. At some point there can be upwards of around 20 of them playing at once. It really has to be seen live to be fully appreciated as to how to impressive it all is. When they recorded this cover as part of a Vic Galloway session last year it came as quite a surprise to [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive It's beginning to seem like guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is as frenetic and kinetic in real life as he is onstage with the Mars Volta (and At the Drive-In before that). The tireless composer and performer has always had a little something going on, on the side, to satisfy all of his urges, and now he's taking the Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Group on the road for their first-ever U.S. engagements. "We'll be playing [...]

Like most people, I believe in a whole host of mythical creatures. So, its not unusual that someone like me might get caught up in all of the endless vampire hype and latch-on to the undead much like they might latch-on to an attractive blonde on a moonlit night. Well... thats not true. You see, all of what I just said is actually bullshit. And I say all of this in small type instead of BOLD letters as to not upset the angry hordes of daydreaming housewives and over-emotional teenagers who are obsessed with [...]

First of all, do not be fooled by that seemingly wholesome image. London's LOS describe themselves as " an obscure mental band " but even that does not come remotely close to the immense intensity of their live shows. Its drums, guitars and a moog. No bass. At the show I went to last night in Leeds, they were dressed all in black and I was expecting some sort of crust punk band or something. [VIDEO: LOS - The Cow] -Video- But then the moment the [...]
The G20 Summit begins today in my home city Toronto. While the first major demonstration happened peacefully yesterday, today is the real test for everyone in and around the city as at least two key groups will embark to march down the streets of Toronto in the afternoon. I think this is an incredible opportunity to capture some extraordinary images, but my friends had advised against any participation in the demonstrations due to the possible danger. At the moment, I am still undecided on whether I will get involve or not... in any case, I hope [...]

Emos hosted one of the most anticipated shows of the Spring music season, as the sold-out Austin crowd welcome Beach House back to town. Opening the evening would be Washed Out . Follow the jump for more. This might come off as a bit of a diatribe against knob-twiddlers, and I admit it sort of is, but Washed Out shouldn't be touring. This is not an attack against his music, as it's mildly [...]
It's hard to believe that The Zookeepers are still as young as they are (I didn't ask, but I'm thinking they're about 11) when you consider not only their polished and well delivered sound, but that they've released SEVEN albums. In the last FOUR years. That's damn prolific. And they're only 11. I think. They're creating music that is unbelievably fun, catchy, danceable, and witty. Think of Cake covering At The Drive-in, but instead of the words being screamed, they're occasionally sung and occasionally rapped. Their latest album "Good Looking Out" is easily one of the more standout albums of [...]

After At the Drive-In disbanded in 2001, fans of the El Paso hardcore band were anxiously awaiting what would come next from the principals, especially vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, or those two skinny guys with all the hair. ATDI released their most popular and most accessible record, Relationship of Command just one year previously and were on the brink of stardom, playing Conan and gaining significant airplay on MTV. Following the abrupt split, Bixler-Zavala and Rodriguez-Lopez formed The Mars Volta, while the remaining members of ATDI formed Sparta, and in an odd twist, [...]

SXSW was growing tremendously by 1997, and with the advent of music blogs and web-ready video cameras, attendees could offer nearly real-time updates on the bands and sets that they were enjoying. Here is a recap of the festival from 1997-2002. 1997 The most eagerly anticipated sets of the week were from Whiskeytown, the alt-country outfit led by Ryan Adams, though most accounts of the bands' performances remember the band as being too fucked up to play. This opened up a spot for breakout band of the festival, [...]

In September 2000, I was 16 years old. I had just gotten my first car, was a sophomore in high school, and was living in southeast Missouri. My CD collection consisted mostly of "Weird" Al Yankovic, They Might Be Giants, and Dave Matthews (band or otherwise). I knew of better music, but I just didn't buy it. I listened to it with friends at their homes when we would get together to drink their dad's beers in the basement. I listened to a lot of Pink Floyd, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Blur, but also whatever 105.7 The Point out of [...]
[MP3] 2.0(00) Mixtape [...]
Old news, you guys: Sunny Day Real Estate played some shows a while back! I probably heard it was going down when the band announced it months ago, but I had never really been a fan of the band, so I didn't care too much. Now, I'm not going to say that this video you're about to watch converted me or anything, but instead solidified my growing adoration for the Seattle group. This particular performance is from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon from late September 2009, and, excuse my French, but I quite like it. The band's not [...]
