I know we've already posted up a Baker's Dozen for September, but there's been so much good new music thrown our way lately that we've got no choice but to throw you a bonus edition. Here are thirteen more extrawack!- approved tracks, ideal for that tricky and very sensitive Summer-to-Fall musical transition: Foreign Born - "Into Your Dream" mp3 Athlete - "Airport Disco" mp3 The Silver Seas - "The Country Life" mp3 [...]
Try it on for size! Sample new releases this week! photo of Devendra Banhart by me It's another wallet-buster of week for new releases, particularly if you're a fan of the indie folk and roots based music. There are reissues out from legendary folkers Pentangle and Karen Dalton and a whole bunch of new releases from artists either considered "new indie folk" or at least influenced by them, like Devendra Banhart, Iron & Wine, Cave Singers, Sir Richard Bishop, Jose Gonzalez, Loney, Dear, Tuung, and Two Gallants. [...]

Detroit 21 vs. Philadelphia 42 I love those throwback Eagles unis. Green means go to the rest of us, but gold-yellow and sky blue must mean it's time for Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook and Kevin Curtis to hit the touchdown dance floor. Brian Westbrook had 110 yards rushing and 111 more receiving, scoring three TDs along the way. He did however leave the game early with an abdominal sprain. McNabb was 21-26 for 381 yards and four touchdowns, silencing all those critics [...]

Voila! Britpop as it's best! Athlete - Airport Disco MP3 [...]

I used to like Athlete quite a lot. They've got a couple of great singles, 'Wires' and 'Half Light', and other decent tracks. However, I was very disappointed upon first listen of their new single 'Hurricane'. It was unimpressive, dull, and lacks a real chorus. 'Beyond The Neighborhood', their third studio album, is now out in the UK, and since I haven't heard it yet, I can't add anything, but it seems to me they're verging closer towards the arena rock territory à la Coldplay and Snow Patrol - which can now be quite boring. However, this dancey Camp [...]
Detail of Beyond The Neighbourhood cover art work. Athlete is going to suffer from the weight of lofty expectations the way a fat kid's tricycle suffers from the weight of toffee and fudge confections. The band is set to release album numero trois, Beyond The Neighbourhood , and already I'm hearing mixed messages. Some say it's miles off their last one, Tourist ; others say it's a radical and different sounding Athlete, and that's a [...]

2007 ain't even close to being over yet however Obscure Sound has a raging rave-up that you should not miss of the new Martina Topley-Bird album, The Blue God (produced by Danger Mouse) due out in 2008. Here's a little taste: Shangri La - Martina Topley-Bird ********** That Duke of The Late Greats - he's got great taste. I never miss a [...]

New entries dominated this weeks UK album chart. Hard-Fi are straight in at #1 with Once Upon A Time In The West . More surprising is the entry of the Plain White T's at #3 with Every Second Counts , riding on the back of the success of the catchy single "Hey There Delilah", which seems to be playing every time I tune into a radio station at the moment. Same can be said for Amy Winehouse , every time I open a newspaper. Clearly, her current [...]

It's all doom and gloom on this brand-new Athlete track, "Airport Disco." This epic tune is taken from the group's self-produced new album "Beyond The Neighborhood" that will be out in the U.K. on September 3. The new album follows the release of their much-anticipated new single "Hurricane" that you can watch here . A press release describes Athlete's new album as, "Louder, stronger, bigger and altogether more powerful than anything they've done before, it sounds like a band who have settled into what they really enjoy doing." I'm really intrigued why they [...]

He's just barely turned 24, but Johnathan Rice seems to have some stuff figured out for himself: major label deal, fancy friends, lauds from R.E.M., an IMDB page, a tour with Gibbard and Bazan, and a relationship with Jenny Lewis (by comparison, think we had just about figured out how to log on to Movable Type by that age). And it's a mix-and-match of all of the above for the video of Johnathan's roots-pop single "We're All Stuck In The Desert"; got your major label budget, ample use of acting chops, Rilo Kileyers Blake Sennett and [...]
Well, after 278 different rambles and one nasty site suspension I've finally hit the one year mark. I doubt many of you have actually been around for the entire existence of SOTO, but whatever amount of time that you've spent here has been super appreciated. I mean, I may not be much of a numbers kind of guy, but I would be lying if I said I didn't like knowing that a couple hundred of you stop by everyday. Thanks. I tried coming up with something amazing to share with everyone today, but the [...]
I don't know the reason but I was totally flooded with emails yesterday. Normally, I would wait and spread the goods out over the rest of the week and in the podcast, but tomorrow is SOTO's one year anniversary and I'm thinking about then taking the weekend off. That would put me behind and I would never catch up, so I picked five of the best and placed them below for your listening pleasure. Enjoy. Imperial Teen, Good Shoes, Monster Bobby, Athlete, 180 Gs Please visit the site for more commentary [...]
Oh my golly, there is some good music here. Hexstatic kicks it off with some rump-shaking jams, and DJ Format follows with a few minutes of music for the mature b-boy. Athlete comes in next with a couple of crushing grooves from their third album Beyond the Neighbourhood , which will be hitting the shelves on Sep. 3rd. Anyone remember The Coral ? Well I do, and I've got a couple of tracks from their new album Roots and Echoes that comes out next week. Let's Wrestle finishes [...]

The most recent issue of Rolling Stone arrived on Tuesday and I sat down and read it cover-to-falling-asleep (I got about halfway through) last night, enjoying it more than any issue I can recall -- and that includes the Pearl Jam ones. RS 1030 is the second of three issues devoted to celebrating the 40-year anniversary of Rolling Stone as a magazine, and this issue is wholly devoted to the year of its nascence, 1967. As a historical document, it is absolutely fascinating: [...]
