For as awesome as it is to be nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, aka as the annual music prize awarded for the best album from the United Kingdom or Ireland, it also comes with serious ramifications, like the fact that you have to followup said nominated album. Take the English band known as Athlete for example. Since release their Mercury Music Prize nominated debut album, Vehicles and Animals , in 2003, the indie rockers' next two albums, 2005's Tourist and 2007's Beyond the Neighbourhood were met with sub par reviews. First, there's a pet peeve I have to address and Athlete's new EP, The Getaway, is a perfect example. All artists, record labels, etc, please stop this farce. When you release an EP, in this case a 4-song set, and two of them are different versions of songs that appear on your album, calling your release an EP is at best disingenuous, and at worst a crass attempt to part your fans from their

The latest volume of the BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge series came out in the UK last week. As usual, there are hits and misses, with many of the better covers left out in favor of more established names. I won't lie - I've been an Athlete fan for quite some time now. While inconsistencies have no doubt been a major problem for the British quartet, they still manage to capture my attention with several songs. "Tourist" and "Airport Disco", in particular, always renew my faith in Athlete's ability when they come up on my speakers. It's called The Getaway EP , but it's really just a taste in preparation for their next full length, Black Swan , which will be out early next year on Original Sound Recordings stateside. Unless I'm mistaken, this will be the band's first record not released on Astralwerks here in the US.
