Ever since I was old enough to complain, my dad took great pleasure in the act of dragging my always-resistant ass to music festivals. A summer full of glorious music for him meant a summer full of unstifled groans from me. His taste in music back then - folk, folk, and nothing but folk - meant we hit folk festivals exclusively, and he wasn't shy about tackling the big, multi-day camp-out fests that separate the men from the meek. I have fond, fuzzy memories of trying to enjoy the Philadelphia Folk Festival and basically roasting alive under an angry sun [...]

“The smog was heavy, my eyes were weeping from it, the sun was hot, the air stank, a regular hell is L.A.” -Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums Hours later, I'm still sneezing dust. Bits of dirt remain caked on my scalp. My feet scream and ache from the loose pebbles or jagged shards of mulch that crept into my shoes all weekend. Skin's on fire, eyes feel dull, and head is weak - they don't make it easy in Los Angeles, CA. Since 2004, Sean Carlson has hosted the "best weekend [...]

Time for a little bit of aural time travel. Let's look back, reflect, and contemplate... what were we listening to one year ago ? Listen to the August 2011 Mix and find out. You can stream (and scrobble ) all the songs in this mix using the ex.fm player at the bottom of the page OR you can just download any or all of the tracks at your leisure and play them using a digital media player of your choice. #ForecastleHangover Flying Lotus pictured above Yes, Forecastle Hangover. Not in a literal sense... well, maybe in a literal sense from Saturday night... but hungover in the sense that we were exhausted, dehydrated, had physical discomforts, aches, pains, etc... and we would most certainly do it all over again in a heartbeat. A heartbeat, or whatever beat Flying Lotus was treating us all to on Friday night. Typically people partying and playing loud music under a highway gets the fuzz involved like in Free Willy (yeah, I [...]

The countdown is on! Only two more days until I board a smelly bus at six in the morning in my attempt to get to Jean Drapeau Park in time to see The Walkmen . High hopes this one has. As the excitement for the festival builds, here is a playlist and preview of what thousands upon thousands of happy ears will be feasting upon. This post will be broken up in three, as the festival has now expanded to three days now. If you are reading this and wondering what the hell "Osheaga" is, well here's [...]
I don't know about you, but to me there's something about bedtime during the summer that fills me with divine peace. Maybe it has to do with the fresh air, the light blankets, airy clothing and and overall breezy environment. Does it get any better than that? It can! I've compiled a relaxing and peaceful summer lullaby playlist for you to drift off to. So lay back and relax in whatever way you prefer and allow the music to do the rest. Shhhhhh. 1. [...]
Posted in General Clickable I just did a wash and noticed that my favourite hoodie has faded quite a bit. It's sad you see because it's a got bits of different colour on it so I can't dye it. I don't know why I'm sharing that with you, a problem shared is a problem halved though isn't it? On [...]

Atlas Sound By Russell Warfield July 19, 2012 Well, we didn't get an hour long rendition of ‘My Sharona,’ but we did—at the behest of a heckler—get an extended blues/noise blowout improvisation about a pet raccoon called ‘Saxophone’ which Bradford nurtured as a child. We also got a mid-set period of about twenty minutes or so of Bradford visibly disintegrating from jet lag in front of our eyes, rambling on a stream of consciousness bent about how a mate of his lied about having an Android. We also—on [...]

Now in its eighth year, the Pitchfork Festival is one of the most established events in the US calender. While opinion may be divided over the blog turned media group, with musicians complaining about the taste maker's politics and music fans getting sick of reading music reviews that sound like dodgy undergrad Cultural Studies essays with an over reliance on words like 'transcendent' and 'signifier', one thing that is for sure is that Pitchfork has the clout to put together a serious summer line-up. Here are State's picks... AraabMuzik [...]
Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer called out to Ty Segall a couple of times during his band's show at Pitchfork Music Festival Sunday. Segall was playing across the park on another stage. Later, Segall asked the entire audience to yell Dwyer. The joke is that these guys had to compete with each other even though they largely have the same fan base. If you're a fan of both bands (like me), you had to miss part of one performance. I watched the entire set by Thee Oh Sees and ran across Union [...]
They say that if you lose a sense, your other senses get stronger. For example, if you're blind, the story goes that you hear better than most people. It seemed apropos, then, that your intrepid reporting team here at Consequence of Sound ended up sharing our hotel for Louisville, Kentucky’s Forecastle Music Festival with an entire convention of blind people: They spend their lives listening hard, and though we’re able to see, we also put a lot of focus on the aural—especially this weekend. Luckily Forecastle is focused on sound as well, and for their [...]
Atlas Sound started his set off with a song dedicated to Kentucky, a cover of Roscoe Holcomb's "Moonshiner" sung a capella. It was extremely unexpected, but equally beautiful. He then started up a great performance of "Te Amo" that was one of the best songs I heard at the festival. If this show was any [...]

Grimes is playing the side stage Saturday night of Pitchfork Music Festival, while Godspeed You! Black Emperor headlines the main-stage area. I'll likely opt for Grimes. The day is short of rock acts but includes a number of interesting options. I intend to get to the fest early enough to see Cloud Nothings , which I'll (unfortunately) have to cut short to catch Lotus Plaza , a side project of Deerhunter guitarist Lockett Pundt. Oddly, Lotus Plaza [...]
