(photo: attackinblack.com) When you live in a nowhere town like mine, it's a pretty big deal when a local band starts making a name for themselves on a national level. Not since Honeymoon Suite darkened the musical landscape of the early 80s has a local band garnered as much attention as Attack In Black has these last few years. Their excellent album, Marriage , was one of the highlights of 2007 for me, and rightfully deserved its spot on the Polaris Prize longlist last year. [...]

Not much to say, except that the songs below have infinitely made my day brighter. I hope they do the same for you. I went to sleep last night and when I openned my eyes, I saw this song standing next to my bed, begging to get in and snuggle . If it happens to find you as well, please let it in. The vocals alone, quivering and shaky enough to wake you up at first but growing large and warm over the fantastic four minutes, are [...]

Shotgun Jimmie is a Sackville, NB musician who toured this past fall with Attack In Black and Ladyhawk. He brought his sense of humour and sarcasm with him as we asked him a few questions about his favorite music of 2008. Raised on Indie: What was your favorite album released in 2008? Shotgun Jimmie: Chad VanGaalen's Soft Airplane. Raised on Indie: Why does this album stand out to you amongst the rest? Shotgun Jimmie: It's taller Chad [...]

I like watching bands get better. And from these earlier posts , you can see that I've been watching this 5-piece band from Hamilton (with songs about factories) grow into a powerhouse live band with a great album to back it up. Charlemagne became Arkells and Arkells have come into their own. This year the band signed a deal with Dine Alone Records ( City and Colour, Attack In Black ) and it seems to have steered the band in the right direction. [...]
It's been a while, but the following finally begins my account of the second day at Sappyfest 2008. For a description of the festival's first day click here . Laura and I awoke in our tent after a late evening of solid concert watching and debauchery. We were camped out behind a massive house that was being rented by students. They'd been nice enough to accommodate The Burning Hell and Bruce Peninsula in their living room while also allowing as many tents out back as the grass could hold. [...]

City and Colour, Black Lungs and Sleepercar Cover Attack in Black Track Released this week in Canada, on iTunes only is an exclusive song that Jim Ward (Sleepercar), Wade MacNeil (Black Lungs), and Dallas Green (City and Colour) recorded on June 6th at The Edge 102.1 studios in Toronto. The song is called "If All I Thought Were True," and it's recorded by a band we all love called Attack In Black. This info came up in my Facebook this morning and I was NEVER so annoyed to not be [...]

Whatever momentum Clinton picked up from her 41-point West Virginia win the Obama camp snuffed out with the Edwards coup de gr??ce. Edwards sat on his endorsement until long after its game-changing power expired, so the damage to Clinton's flicker of a campaign is more symbolic than anything. The crux of his "everyone's doing it" speech last night in Michigan was that he was mimicking the will of the voters. Because he waited, Edwards' decision to finally choose a horse reinforces the "it's over" story line. Watch this narrative get another boost next week when Obama clinches the pledged delegate [...]
Date: May 1, 2008 Venue: The Phoenix Don't take your SLR camera to the Phoenix. That was the first thing I learned upon showing up to check out The Constantines on Thursday night. Basically, I was told that a compact point-and-shoot would have been fine, but I couldn't bring a "professional looking" camera into the venue. This is the same thing that happened to me at the Danforth Music Hall last year when I went to see Iron and Wine-my [...]

It's been almost two years since I started writing this blog, and until just the other day, I hadn't noticed that I was getting pretty close to a milestone of sorts in QBiM's history: the 500 th post. That may not seem like a lot, but it works out to be an average of about 1.2 posts per day spilling out of my head since I started. Not bad, I think. So how to celebrate this event? First, I get my good friend Tara to work together a kick-ass graphic [...]

Sadly, The Wheel's Still In Spin will not be going to SXSW this year. But we can still dream. Here is a list of the bands that we would most like to see at SXSW for Sat, March 15, 2008 . There are links to each artist's band page at SXSW.com with a short quote, when available, from the band's bio that appears on that page. 1:30PM - [...]
We continue sampling our favorite artists and songs found at the SXSW 2008 Showcasing Artists website. We still have a lot more to go, so keep dropping by if you like. I should have said earlier how incredibly generous it is of the SXSW folks to make these available, so in case any of those busy eyes peer here, THANKS! Our previous SXSW 2008 posts can be found here and here. Hope you're finding

Photo by Frank Yang I came this close to having to title this post "Maybe Not Tonight" as illness forced Nicole Atkins to cancel Saturday's show in Buffalo, obviously putting Toronto's show at risk. By mid-Sunday, however, there came another MySpace note declaring that a night off had done a world of good and the show would go on. Buffalo, we thank you for your sacrifice. Good luck with that fire in Cheektowaga. Local support on the night was Magneta Lane , who were surprising inasmuch [...]

M y favorite album of the moment (in addition to the new Chris Walla and Ida albums) has got to be Attack In Black's 2007 album Marriage . It beautifully fuses rough and tumble punk with delicate and yearning alt-country melodies shaded with a hint of Springsteen-esqe rock n' roll and sounds like the pulse of the American heartland. Except that these guys are from Canada. On Marriage Attack In Black incorporates tons of different stylistic elements (saxophones, banjo, steel guitar, gentle piano codas, snarling vocals, etc…) together into a cohesive [...]

In 2006, AIB (Attack in Black) signed to Dine Alone Records (home to City and Colour, Bedouin Soundclash). AIB have shared the stage with the Cancer Bats, Death By Stereo, and embarked on a major national tour with Alexisonfire and Every Time I Die. AIB recently won at the annual 'Casby Music Awards' in Canada for 'Best New Artist' , as well as 'Best new indie release' for their record "Marriage", beating out the likes of Arcade Fire and Tokyo Police Club. [...]

"...and i really hope it's hope that you deliver." I may have found a new favorite band in Canadian punks Attack In Black . It's not often I say things like that, either. Their newly released disc "Marriage" is my CD of the moment. It's one of those track-after-track greats...and who wants to waste time pressing the skip button, anyway? The disc comes highly recommended, as does nearly everything in the Dine Alone catalog (Bedouin Soundclash, anyone? What's not to like?). [...]

(photo: Jess Baumung ) I've never put on airs about the fact that I was born and raised in Welland, Ontario , famous for its canal and very little else. It's been a hardworking, industrial town for as long as its been around (which will be 150 years in 2008), about 20 minutes from Niagara Falls and and hour and a half from Toronto on a good day ( we Canadians measure distance in time, you know?). Growing up, the biggest claim to fame Welland had was the [...]
