I have made the odd discovery in the past few days that some of my posts are going missing without explanation. It's kind of a scary thing to have two big posts just completely disappear, especially since I received no emails or comments asking me to take them down or anything. While I'm determined to repost them (and just did), I'm a bit worried that I've had to re-upload two Hits posts now, and that the most recent Dear Ibiza post was taken down within a mere few days. Strange that the author of the blog is the one without [...]

As many longtime visitors may have noticed by now, I've updated a bunch of stuff on the blog. While the link lists on the sidebar still need some housecleaning, I finally changed out the old logo picture (to another Goldfrapp one, naturally!) and mixed up all the fonts and colors. It's not a huge deal, but it's refreshing nevertheless. Also new is a subscribe tab in the top left, letting you subscribe to posts or comments with various feed types. That way, you can be kept up to speed on when new posts are ready to sample. For those of [...]

I know, it's been way too long. In my defense, I've been away from Berkeley for so long that it's taking some time for me to get back into the groove of things. Plus, I had a lot of partying to make up for, and the internet has been undependable for the past two weeks at the co-op. I'm also caught in the weird dilemma of buying and downloading music at a much faster rate than I can hope to listen to it all, leaving me a bit deadlocked when it comes to blog posts. Anyway, a few nights ago, [...]

A great tragedy has befallen Kylie Minogue's fourth single from her recent album X . In the midst of her biggest tour yet, and reportedly on the rocks with Parlophone, her record label since 2000, "The One" has seen its release reduced to a total mess. A number of things have gone wrong with the promotion for the X album from day one, but this screw-up has upset fans more than anything else. Starting with the release of the risky "2 Hearts," the album didn't herald her grand comeback [...]
So, while I'm away and unable to post any hot new tracks, I wanted to at least post up some new videos and music news. In the past I've used the Attention section to highlight other blogs and big music news and the like, so now I feel it's appropriate to start using it for short news snippets also. This arrived in my inbox a while ago, but I didn't get around to posting about it until now. Yelle, the French electro-pop singer that burst onto the scene just a few years ago with the highly addictive "Je [...]
Róisín Murphy's latest single, the dancefloor stormer "Movie Star," was originally set to be released in late July, as previewed on these pages with its fabulous video. However, July came and went, with nothing more than a video as proof of its slated release. Things had started to get a bit worrying when no sign of any radio promos, club mixes, tracklistings or cover sleeves showed up, but a few weeks ago the situation was resolved (forgive my lateness on the matter). The single has been pushed back to an October release, but that's not all! It will now be [...]
Today is the birthday of pop's undisputed queen, the one and only Madonna. It's hard to believe she's been at the top of the pop game for 25 years now, and even harder to believe (especially for those who have seen her perform live) that she's reached the milestone age of 50. To celebrate the occasion, I've picked out my top five favorite Madonna videos of all time. As I'm still on vacation, I wasn't able to do a music post to celebrate, but didn't feel I should leave the day unmarked (after all, she's been featured many times on [...]

Girl Talk is back! The master of hyperactive mash-ups and copyright-bending sampling, Girl Talk has gained widespread acclaim and notoriety over the past few years for his astounding DJ skills. His last album Night Ripper was a non-stop thrill ride with its hundreds of samples from every genre, juxtaposing completely disparate clips for often stunning results. His new disc Feed The Animals ups the ante, with over 300 samples crammed into its fourteen tracks. This time around, his label Illegal Art is offering it for a Radiohead-esque pay-your-own-price download. For those who [...]

T hanks to everyone that has given suggestions for this series. Much good stuff indeed. Anyhow, with this post we've reached the halfway point, so (obviously) there is plenty more pop punk junk coming your way. There will be Ramones influenced songs and gruff and angsty songs from the No Idea school of pop punk as well. Whatever your choice is, I'm hopeful that you'll find something to your liking. So after leaving Lollapalooza on Sunday evening, I headed over to a great little venue called Schubas to meet my wife for an intimate little show featuring The City On Film, Attention, and Jonah Matranga. Coincidental or not, both Kevin and Justin have both already written about Jonah's latest project: a split 12" with Englishman Frank Turner, but I will also. Jonah delicately covers my favorite Billy Bragg song "A New England" and Babybird's "All I Want," while Frank Turner takes on The Lemonheads' classic "The Outdoor [...]
