About a week ago, I spent a couple of hours on YouTube looking up a bunch of space rock bands I was unfamiliar with, like Tomorrowland and Fuxa and Auburn Lull. What I came away with was an even greater appreciation of the genre and the moods it evokes, as well as a clearer understanding of how space rock fits into the history of psychedelic music as a whole. Thus, in the hopes of increasing appreciation for the sort of forgotten genre and of exploring the reasons for its demise (as well as its interesting resurgence in odd places like [...]

after a stressful week last week, and in anticipation of a similar week ahead, i've spent the weekend doing as little as possible other than reading a mindless thriller and listening to music. i'm constantly tweaking my itunes, creating new playlists, correcting genres, etc. when your library is over 300gb it's the only way to keep track of things and be sure you can listen to what you want when you want. plus it's nerdily satisfying. and here's a selection of songs from this weekend's playlist. it started off by listening to james blackshaw and spread from there. [...]

"Secret Eyes" by Cloetta Paris on Skywriting Records gets my Number 1 for 2008. I can't tell you the countless times I've played this album (and on repeat even) since it was released back in April. I wouldn't say I'm a big Italo disco fan (okay, I do love Sally Shapiro as well, so maybe that automatically qualifies me?). I'd be more apt to say I'm a Roger Gunnarsson fan (aka Clive Reynolds, Free Loan Investments, Nixon, etc). I can hear his influence all over this record. Genius! [...]

It's another summer weekend in the area and that means plenty of shows to choose from. Here's what is on tap. Most of the bands are doing us a favor and playing two shows this weekend. The big tour rolling through right now is The Hold Steady . They have new album hitting the shelves in the middle of July (already available in e-format on iTunes), so expect some new songs with your old favorites. Birds of Avalon , also supporting a new album released back in [...]

To you, the card-carrying member of that corner of the hip-hop digging populace that daily bemoans the murder of your genre by pussy-faced practitioners and their faux-thuggin' swipes, bemoan no longer. Premiere hip-hop program the Wake Up Show has teamed up with social networking/music discovering site urSESSION — the self-proclaimed "Sundance of the music industry" — to give unsigned rappers America-wide the chance to flaunt their flow on top of some body-rocking beats. Called the 100K Battle, it features 28 beats produced by DJ giants like Pete Rock, Alchemist and the late J Dilla, all of which are freely [...]

We have to sheepishly mention that we didn't include Auburn Lull in our list of releases this week. We dropped the ball, so we had to make up for it by devoting a full post just to them. They're just that good. On first listen, Auburn Lull struck me as one of the most well put together experimental indie groups I've heard this year. It was instantaneous. Songs such as "Stanfield Echo" are so simply laid out, yet shimmering in their construction; perfect for any shoegaze dweller to step right through their [...]

It is very rare to get a rainy day in central Florida. This whole weekend has been a rainy, dark gloomy one. It reminds me of when I was growing up in New England. The only difference is I am surrounded by palm trees and 90 degree weather. Rainy day Sundays are the perfect day to hibernate inside and listen to some mellow relaxing music. The mix below is just that by bands you probably have not heard or experienced. Check them out. As always I have provided a link to the band and to the appropriate CD. [...]
