When I first came across Audra Mae a couple of years ago, the first thing that impressed was the voice — powerful and expansive as the plains in her native Oklahoma. Then, of course, there was the fact she could use "jeepers" in a song and get away with it . Her backstory — the great-great-niece of Judy Garland, she arrived in L.A. in 2004 with 20 bucks in her pocket — continues to grow: After gaining notoriety for her cover of "Forever Young" on TV's "Sons of Anarchy;" she contributed a song to Susan Boyle's 2009 album, released [...]

Tig : And we blame the angry black man. Clarence 'Clay' Morrow : It's the American way. After giving up TV for weeks to get work done on an important project, I anxiously set about shutting myself in so that I could reclaim my throne (couch) and prepare the jesters (Netflix Instant Queue) for my weekend ahead of me. Yeah ok so i may be two or three years late with this one but who gives a shit really? Well, i say two or three years late but who's to tell these days when something is self-released, then perhaps released on a small label in their own country and then re-re-released when it's picked up in the UK and europe? There is no official release date as such and as I say, does it really matter? As long as you are hearing about it is what's important right? At the moment there seems to be a few [...]

Oklahoma City-native Audra Mae performed three songs for World Cafe on NPR yesterday. Audra talks about her Oklahoma upbringing and how signing with a smaller label is a good idea. Audra Mae has a compelling natural sweetness to her style that simply calls for attention. With a smooth, quietly subtle voice and an interesting mix of jazz, country twang and pop sensibilities, she describes her music as "a cross between Patsy Cline and Janis Joplin, but maybe more like Bonnie Raitt." As the [...]

Austin, TX - Victoria room is a quaint sitting room in the historic Driskill hotel on 6th and Brazos, where LBJ loved to stay. Compare to the rest of the hotel, its furnishings are sparse and, contrary to the insane streams of hot bodies (I don't mean it in the beauty sense), the population of the room was sporadic when I strode in. Having misunderstood that Vandaveer plays at an amphitheater across the river and not 5 min from our hotel, I did what every Asian person would - stayed back and ate spicy beef donair kebab. 3 [...]

My assignment for SPIN.com kept me tied up at the SPIN 25 party at Stubb's all afternoon for nonstop music capped by Hole's first North American concert in more than a decade. The highlight of the support bands that day was the indoors set from Harlem [above], whose crackling garage rock made me wish I could just stay in the small rooms for all of SXSW. Later in the evening: ☛ Admiral Radley — the new quartet marrying members of Grandaddy and Earlimart — gave a great show [...]
