Audra Mae releases her debut full-length, The Happiest Lamb , today on SideOneDummy Records . The album was produced by Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem, Lucero). Purchase: iTunes Audra Mae, the great-grandniece of Judy Garland, grew up in Edmond and attended P.C. North in Oklahoma City. Since then, the 25-year-old singer-songwriter has moved on to Los Angeles where she landed a television placement singing Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" on the FX series "Sons of Anarchy". In late 2009, Audra [...]
Oklahoma City-native Audra Mae performed three songs for World Cafe on NPR yesterday. Audra talks about her Oklahoma upbringing and how signing with a smaller label is a good idea. Audra Mae has a compelling natural sweetness to her style that simply calls for attention. With a smooth, quietly subtle voice and an interesting mix of jazz, country twang and pop sensibilities, she describes her music as "a cross between Patsy Cline and Janis Joplin, but maybe more like Bonnie Raitt." As the [...]

Austin, TX - Victoria room is a quaint sitting room in the historic Driskill hotel on 6th and Brazos, where LBJ loved to stay. Compare to the rest of the hotel, its furnishings are sparse and, contrary to the insane streams of hot bodies (I don't mean it in the beauty sense), the population of the room was sporadic when I strode in. Having misunderstood that Vandaveer plays at an amphitheater across the river and not 5 min from our hotel, I did what every Asian person would - stayed back and ate spicy beef donair kebab. 3 [...]

My assignment for SPIN.com kept me tied up at the SPIN 25 party at Stubb's all afternoon for nonstop music capped by Hole's first North American concert in more than a decade. The highlight of the support bands that day was the indoors set from Harlem [above], whose crackling garage rock made me wish I could just stay in the small rooms for all of SXSW. Later in the evening: ☛ Admiral Radley — the new quartet marrying members of Grandaddy and Earlimart — gave a great show [...]

[Birthday greetings today go out to Corinne Bailey Rae ... Here's your menu for tonight's musical feast, with a couple of mp3s at the end as an appetizer:] Visqueen's album "Message to Garcia" is getting a lot of attention for what it isn't — tricked up or gimmicky. The Seattle quartet [pictured] fronted by guitarist Rachel Flotard traffics in exhilarating, straight-ahead rock (Joan Jett has been mentioned in comparisons), and its third full-length, a tribute to Flotard's late father, is powerful stuff. Visqueen hits Spaceland tonight with [...]

The South by Southwest Music Conference released the schedule for 2010 Official Showcasing Bands this week. There were 11 Oklahoma artists on that list: • Audra Mae • Cady Groves • The City Lives • Colourmusic • Dre Murray • Gum • [...]

Lou Barlow, who was there at the beginning when Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh started making noise back in the day, visits Spaceland tonight — his Lou Barlow & The Missing Men support the residency of his former bandmate in the Folk Implosion, Imaad Wasif . The final night of Wasif's Silver Lake stand promises to be loud. Avi Buffalo is also on the bill. ... See Green , the new incarnation for the music made by singer-songwriter Courtenay Green, recently completed a new EP and plays the Silverlake Lounge. ... And Josh Charles [...]

Folk, Country, Lo-Fi, Electro, Garage, Blues, and Indie in equal, excellent measure. If you don't have them yet, download, put 'em on a mix CD and enjoy or give it to someone for Christmas. As ever, check the labels on the
Audra Mae comes from good stock! Turns out she is the grand niece of none other than Judy Garland. However, she has taken a slightly different route into the world of entertainment, favouring the backwoods, country porch approach if her digital EP Haunt (released last month) on SideOnedummy Records is anything to go by.What is most noticeable is her gorgeous voice and the natural, floating vocal

We've been on hiatus this week test driving cars and listening to snarky salesmen pitches. What I wanted was a sports car so rad it would magically melt the clothes off any hottie on the street. Alas, what I got was a whole lot different. W e ended up with an affordable and easy on the gas Kia Sportage. I will say for a factory job, the audio system is banging, equipped with Sirius sat radio, a USB connection, iPod/mp3 player jacks. It also comes with all [...]
[ download ] Scarcely any artists merit comparison to the absurdly gifted Neko Case , but Audra Mae may be one of them. The Oklahoman singer and songwriter has just released her debut recording, the five track Haunt EP, a stunning premiere which showcases her considerable vocal prowess. Like Case, Mae's singing easily ranges from honeyed, lightly accented cooing to a booming, powerful delivery. From a musical perspective, other touchstones are the indie-friendly, folksy melodies of Hayley Bonar and Jessica Lea Mayfield . However, [...]
"The River" - Audra Mae With clear roots in country and folk, two very structured genres, "The River" hooks the ear with a series of surprising melodic and harmonic shifts. We hear this first at 0:15, when Mae follows the opening two traditional-sounding lines with a third ("The river's gonna wash my sins away") that runs unexpectedly up through a diminished chord. How did we get here? Suddenly the music is unresolved, and remains so until one more surprising shift, at 0:26, on the words "make me forget." Resolution comes on the succeeding [...]

There's no shortage of aspiring divas these days (judging from the volume of e-mail exhortartions), but singer-songwriter Audra Mae has to rank as one of the most compelling young voices out there. The Oklahoma-reared, Los Angeles-based songstress is an old soul in a young package, with voice that inspires the likes of me to name-check the likes of Patsy Cline, Melissa Etheridge and Dolly Parton and a sound that seems to fit in the First Assembly of the Soulful Twang. She earned some traction when her cover of "Forever Young" was placed in the TV show [...]

Congratulations goes out to little miss AUDRA MAE for signing to SideOneDummy Records! Thanks to our buds over at RM64 , they turned us onto Audra and had her play the Rumble: LA party last week and she absolutely floored us with a voice as big as promised. At one point in her 3 Clubs set, as the crowd was completely wrapped around her finger, I realized that we could be seeing her in a year or two playing the Hollywood Bowl with Ray LaMontagne. Her DOLLY PARTON personality spills over and invites [...]

Future Sounds is already starting to celebrate the latest release by DIOS , " Cosmic Rays" (Buddyhead) so we wrapped our RUMBLE: LA party this month around their goodness tonight at 3 Clubs in Hollywood. She's been called the new PATSY CLINE, huh? 'Dems big words, but LA's AUDRA MAE [...]
