Augustus Pablo : Jah Light [ purchase ] The melodica, also known as the blow-organ or the key-flute, was long regarded as a children's toy and not much more. Minimal music composer Steve Reich was one of the first ones to use it as a 'serious' instrument, while the odd jazz cat had fun with it, too. But it was Jamaica-born Horace Swaby, better known as Augustus Pablo, who made the melodica really respectable. In his able hands, the instrument came alive and [...]

Released:07-25-2011Dub music originated in the studios of Kingston, Jamaica in the early 1970's as recording engineers began experimenting with analogue tapes using personally customised delay, echo and reverb effects. It was, in effect, the next step on from a straight instrumental recording or version. The idea of breaking down the elements in a traditional recording and choosing to hi-light

Lee 'Scratch' Perry once called dub "x-ray music," presumably because dub specialists acted like radiologists by revealing the inner workings of their subjects. They bared their basslines, their percussion strategies, their melodic accents. For No Genre's first curated mixtape, I thought I'd throw open the vacuum tube and send some swampy dub gamma rays your way. After the jump, you can stream each track of the mix and read my liner notes. Or, you can simply download the mix by following the link in the picture. [...]

Two prime examples of Augustus Pablo working his magic. The melodica king transforms a pair of already mighty fine roots reggae tunes, respectively by Paul Whiteman and Bongo Pat, into the ethereal stuff of legend that is King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown from 1976. Finest dub album ever, hands down. Paul Whiteman - Say So MP3 Augustus Pablo - Corner Crew Dub MP3 Bongo Pat - Young Generation MP3 Augustus Pablo - Young Generation Dub MP3

Here's a fun stocking stuffer. I recently bought Super Cat's great early LP, Si Boops Deh! (Techniques, 1986--not to be confused with the lesser Boops! ), which features a wonderful cartoon rendition of Cat passing out money to all of his gal friends on the back cover ("boops" being Jamaican slang for "sugar daddy"). The artwork was signed "Limonious", and when I Googled the name I found The Wilfred Limonious Archive , which is a wonderful collection of the 100+ album covers designed by Limonious that so mark the style of '80s dancehall records. On the [...]

It's Sunday night. All across the country, people are watching horrible television. I know this because I drove to Nicci's house after work only to learn that she was involved in a reality cooking show, and half of her neighbors were involved in an episode of a vampire drama. The other half of her neighbors were watching Jersey Shore . This left me with nothing to do but think about blogging. I was sidetracked for a few hours by a spur-of-the-moment poker tournament, but now that I've lost my $5 I can once again focus on sharing some music [...]

Polynya (an area of open water surrounded by sea ice) sound like they're auditioning to be the 4AD house band. Orlando , with it's isolated, whispering vocals, guitars ringing with reverb, the basslines wriggling along underneath the song sounds like it's been created from a 4AD flat pack. It's not all epic shoegazing, it's not all updated Cocteau Twins and Lush for the 21st century. No there's more to Polynya than mere 4AD mimickery. Taking their cue from the source of their band name for Polynya shoegazing is merely the solid sea ice [...]

King Tubby (born Osbourne Ruddock , January 28, 1941 - February 6, 1989) was a Jamaican electronics and sound engineer, known primarily for his influence on the development of dub music in the 1960s and 1970s. Tubby's innovative studio work, which saw him elevate the role of the mixing engineer to a creative fame previously only reserved for composers and musicians, would prove to be highly influential across many genres of popular music. He is often cited as the inventor of the concept of the remix, and so [...]

It's Wednesday and time for the second edition of the Teddybears remix/mash-up series in anticipation of their upcoming "Devil's Music" album. "This time Teddybears got Gnarls Barkley's Cee-Lo Green singing about his cat...or is he talking about something else? The beat sounds familiar...Is it Coxsone Dodd's crown jewel - Real Rock, Augustos Pablo? Armagideon Time? And as if that wasn't enough to get you motor revving, none other than the luscious vixens Kate & Cindy of the B 52's throw in some moaning and groaning and miiiaowing for good measure and Fred Schneider sings [...]
