Our latest installment of Substitute Teachers comes from Grinel, one half of the Brighton-based label Donky Pitch . They've been responsible for some top releases this year (including a couple that have shown up in our monthly mix series ), and I was also given the opportunity to shoot Grinel a few questions about their work. When did you start Donky Pitch ? Was there a particular artist/track that got you started? I first started thinking about the club night in December 2008. I'd been to visit [...]

Along with a lot of excellent new EPs and singles, this year has seen the official release of Light Asylum 's In Tension , our favorite EP of 2010 . I should also mention Arthur Russell 's outstanding Let's Go Swimming 12", which got reissued with a previously unreleased bonus track. As for this year's releases, these are some of our favorites: Holy Other : With U Laurel Halo : Hour Logic Maria Minerva : Sacred [...]

1. Clams Casino - All I Need / I'm God from Instrumental Mixtape ( Type ) Even if both these beats technically came out last year beneath Soulja Boy and Lil' B raps respectively, it wasn't until about half way through this year that the full mountainous weight of these instrumentals really hit me. And just out of Imogen Heap samples, I mean shit! 2. James [...]

Art has an incredible power to bring back a feeling, a ghost, a forgotten fragment you didn't consciously know you had in your memory. At this moment we were travelling on a couch full of purple & poker-dot covered girls from Liverpool to Manchester for a concert by Prince. This post, despite all appearances, is not about Prince. On the stereo was George Clinton - either Parliament or Funkadelic, but thats not the important part either. The discussion was about how, like, amazing the previous song had been but [...]
July provided us with a massive compilation, boasting 18 tracks that span over an hour. As expected with a compilation of that length, there are plenty of interesting stylistic pursuits inside. The Stepkids nod to the '70s by tackling a genius fusion of soul and psych-rock, while the '80s make an appearance with several artists [...]

Declaring that an artist has been influenced by Prince is sort of like claiming that he or she was raised on breakfast cereal. His Royal Purpleness is so fundamental to our culture's sound that it's not in any way weird for Andre 3000 and The-Dream and How to Dress Well and LCD Soundsystem and Nine Inch Nails and Red Hot Chili Peppers and My Morning Jacket to all claim some piece of Prince. And finding purple acolytes popping up in the darkest corners in the internet 25 years after his best work seems somehow inevitable. Trying to update even portions [...]
Contemporary interpretations of rhythmically inclined genres, like R&B and soul, have remained a continuous trend. Quality predecessors have already shown the style to appear timeless, so that is one attributing factor, but its abundance today in independent music circles is more indebted to its seamless maneuverability in sampling. That is not a reference to straightforward [...]

After slugging through the recent surge of "dark" crooners and "icy" moaners, it seemed that the best "indie R&B" could hope to create was a sense of heartbreaking fragility. Despite my affinity for How To Dress Well and James Blake, the two have produced albums that appear to be afraid of their own shadows. There are seemingly deliberate "flaws" to both – HTDW's lower-than-lo-fi production and Blake's glitchy inaccessibility – and these artistic choices, while enhancing each album's sense of vulnerability and humanness, ultimately serve to intellectualize a genre that used to be characterized by excess, not essays. Not that that's [...]

Autre Ne Veut — Just Return Currently helping to beat the heat is Autre Ne Veut 's new Body EP (out now on Hippos In Tanks ), which serves to follow up his masterstroke of a debut on Olde English Spelling Bee . Throughout the 4-track release, ANV continues to mine R&B and pop of a bygone era, wheeling out more slick, schmaltzy melodies and skyscraping falsetto. Like opener "Sweetheart" , "Just [...]

Tri Angle Records Presents: Let Me Shine For You - Free EP "Inspired in part by Lindsay Lohan's grotesquely fascinating black hole existence and in part by my unwavering belief in the power of pop music as an artform, I saw an opportunity to create something interesting with her music, and decided to ask some friends to reinterpret some of Lindsay's songs. "Tri Angle Records Presents: Let Me Shine for You" is the result. Even though we are all fond of Lindsay in our own ways, there is no FREE LINDSAY agenda [...]

The album was mixed by Prefuse 73 and features a guest contribution by Autre Ne Veut. The first track to emerge is the playfully mid-tempo late night jam "Emergency Room". Check [...]
