Fine artist and photographer Inge Jacobsen has recently completed these vibrant hand knit covers with the aim to "add a level of uniqueness to something that is mass produced." Currently finishing up her final year at Kingston University in London, Jacobsen's principle study in fine art photography has given her multiple outlets to express her ideas. "The images I use are from women's high fashion magazines and pornographic images found on the internet," states Jacobsen. Remaining dedicated to the various interpretations of mass media Jacobsen states, "My main concern as an artist is how one responds [...]
Combining blown glass with rippled fabrics, German illustrator and sculptress, yes, sculptress, Angelika Arendt has recently unveiled her latest exhibition entitled "Vertical Headspin." The selections featured within cover Angelika's work over the past decade. Sometimes you gotta just marvel at it all. Art, you know. Certain pieces may or may not resonate with you, but at the end of the day I think you have to appreciate it all, at its root, the art of creating. Let's take Angelika's lead and just make more things. I think we'll all be better off for it. [...]
I've blogged about this project again and again . And honestly, I'm still not 100% sure how I feel about it. The aggression of Death Grips is attempted by many, but only achieved by a few. Clearly, the primary influence in this project is hip hop music, but it's incredibly heavy on the noise, weird effects, and volume. The abstract and surreal lyrics in some of these tracks is a whole 'nother can of worm's, too. Just experience the whole LP for yourself via the stream below or a download here :
Being a huge Zach Hill fan, I have been closely and eagerly following the news surrounding his new Death Grips project, offering as it does a means of holding over my appetite until the new Hella record drops. Hill is not only a frighteningly virtuosic percussionist; he is also one of the most consistently rewarding and prolific experimental musicians/composers alive. Apparently he now belongs to Death Grips, which is ostensibly a hip-hop outfit, inasmuch as hip-hop is music featuring an MC who rhymes. Filling the lyrical duties is an imposingly bearded friend of Hill's whom, according to [...]
Art can be so magical. Such an amazing way to show what's inside, outside. I often times marvel not necessarily at the aesthetic qualities of a piece, but more so the creative urges that compelled such a work. "Damn, how did they even think to do that?" I ask myself. The work of Miami based graffiti artist Typoe proves no different. Creating this vibrant piece from shards of spray paint caps, Typoe's work again confirms that the possibilities are limitless when it comes to creativity. [...]
The songs from w h o k i l l , Merill Garbus' second tUnE-yArDs album may be a bit more pop-conventional, a bit tighter around the edges and a bit more studio-polished than BiRd-BrAiNs . But the approach and the effect are still very much similar. The songs are deceptively complex, distilled down to a few sonic elements. Drums as tough as nails. Funky, slinking basslines. Crunchy guitar chords and passionate vocals. All of this basically amounts to saying that every instrument in each song is working hard [...]
This past Saturday marked the opening of Art In the Streets . A collaborative project celebrating the history of graffiti and street art. Showcasing works from the movements most recognizable figures, Art In the Streets details the rise of the street art movement in the 702s and beyond, featuring works from iconic artists such as Shepard Fairey of Obey fame, the late Keith Haring, and Fab 5 Freddy. With separate installations presented within the show, one of the more impressive works may be the Street Market , which will feature a re-creation of a complete urban street. Also [...]
In the instant-gratification climate of music today, there's always something to be said for the cohesive project rich in replay value. On that count, The Weeknd's debut (or more accurately, mysterious Toronto-based singer/songwriter Abel Tesfaye's) is as impressive as any in recent memory. Aside from that, there's always room for some sexy ass mood music, and on that front, House of Balloons fits the bill even better. It would be hard to talk about the recent wave of indie-minded art R&B (The Weeknd, Frank Ocean or perhaps even James [...]
I've been slappin the Sebastien Tellier for a while now, but it was only until recently that I discovered his identity. It's always cool when some dope music comes from someone you wouldn't expect. When you have one of those "Damn I didn't know they looked like that," moments. Nonetheless, Sebastien is a special one. With seven albums under his belt, Tellier's 2008 album Sexuality is the artists most erotic work to date. It's deliberately electronic, and deliberately provocative, yet music for any occasion. Call it bedroom music, but what's in a genre nowadays. Download: [...]
La Blogotheque 's take away video of Colin Stetson has a note, "If ever there was a time to not write about music and to simply listen, this is it." Wholeheartedly agreed. The second volume of Colin Stetson's 'New History Warfare' series on Constellation deserves every bit of praise, including perhaps the best album of this year and Pitchfork's remark 'Once in a while, I can convince myself that it's impossible to say anything truly new in music. [..] But then I'll come across a new record that sounds like nothing else I've [...]
If you handed me a map and told me to point to Finland I could do that with relative ease (thanks to a pricey liberal arts education), it's that little country that looks sort of like a demonic claw that borders Sweden and Russia. Okay, first off what the hell does this have to do with listening to music (as the name of the site implies)? Well, to answer that question, Yes Please! is a genre-less band that calls this relatively cursory country its home. The band is composed of vocalist/guitarist Mikael, backing vocalist/guitarist Teppo, and bassist/backing vocalist [...]

SLO-MO JELLO
This could either be a food video, or double as an interpretive dance piece with the right soundtrack. Actually, try playing this video to some classical music... See what I mean? With classical music behind this, this video can turn into an introspective piece that plays upon the balance of life, space, and infinity. That might be a stretch. But we've digressed nonetheless. Really though, how dope is this? I guess this is what you can get with a camera that captures 6200 frames per second. Please note the Jello hitting the harlem shake around the 1:16 mark. Thanks [...]

THE POWER OF COLLABORATION
Written By Lukas Brekke-Miesner Lil Buck is an amazing young hip-hop dancer from Los Angeles. Yo-Yo Ma is the most renowned cellist of his time, having been awarded 16 Grammys and two Presidential Medals of Freedom, just to name a few of his accolades. One would think that a baroque musician and a dancer who specializes in Memphis Jooking wouldn't have much to say to each other in an elevator. And yet, together Yo-Yo Ma's prodigious strokes and Lil Buck's magical ankles have crafted a beautiful piece of artistry that transcends classification. [...]

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM BIDS FAREWELL
I'm not always into the "cosmic significance" kind of thing, but it seemed a strange coincidence that Dance Yourself Clean would fall on the night of James Murphy and his LCD Soundsystem project's farewell show at Madison Square Garden. "Thanks for supporting this weird thing", Murphy told the audience as the band launched into "Home", and I couldn't help but feel the same way. There's a lot you can say about a band as great, as odd, as influential and as fun as LCD Soundsystem. Pitchfork, in an excellent piece , chronicled their entire career, song by [...]
News: The Neon Marshmellow Music Festival is back in Chicago for another year
Chicago's weirdo experimental music festival The Neon Marshmellow Fest is back again for another year in the windy city, bringing a slew of obscure talent to the forefront for three straight days of concerts at the Empty Bottle venue. Last year saw the likes of Excepter, Shattered Hymen, Greg Kelley, Fossils and more, and this [...]
