Another night, another great show at the Iron Horse in Northampton, Mass. This time we were treated to the sensuous and beautiful rhythmic flow of the indie hip-hop artist Ana Tijoux. Frankly, I'm still surprised her tour took her here of all places, especially how the majority of the performance's audience turned out to be mature to older white women. Not exactly the most lively and ethnically diverse crowd New England has to offer... but at least we were there to represent the under-40 crowd. The opener, A Severe Joy, plays like [...]

Photo: David Carter Avec is four-piece rock band from Baltimore with a punchy individualistic sound, formed in 2003. They delivered a memorable set Saturday night at Ottobar . There are some real gems here from If I Breathe I Fall Asleep (2005) and Lines (2007), along with a slow surfy instrumental you need to hear called "Ouija Boyfriend." Outstanding. I must say when I first listened to Avec's latest release Lines ( Civil Defense League ), I was without words. I'd never heard anything quite like it. Avec blends crisp guitar riffs with tight drums and thick bass that borders on early Metallica, but stays closer to indie rock enough to keep me interested. The vocals of Shawna Potter and Brooks Harlan build off each other to create blissful pop melodies yet still retaining angst and harshness to complement the style of music behind them. Right now you're probably saying, "Wait a minute [...]

After a couple weeks with few releases of note, it seems that the fall lineup of great music started this week. The big names are coming out in full force and they're getting ready to bankrupt you. We even have some great releases from bands in our region. Of course, everybody is touring in support of these releases, so we have a ton of regional dates. Sit back and enjoy, this is going to be a long one. AVEC My pick for this week's top release, would [...]
