It's been apparent for some time that I don't have the best long-term memory and it became very obvious this weekend that it's quite faulty indeed! While we were tripping down memory lane, my husband kept recalling things we'd done and places we'd gone and although sometimes I had vague recollections of the events he was talking about, I have nowhere near the crystal clear memories he has of them. I do better with faces, though, and at the party we went to we had [...]

Who? Day Action Band What? Folky songs, that you can whistle to! Sounds like? Lou Barlow, Sebadoh...actually all lou barlow stuff, except the loud things. I read Jim O'rourke as a reference, and that's something i can agree with for a bit. So, Aviary Ghost played folk songs. So does Day Action Band, but they don't fill their songs with rich arrangements. Aviary Ghost offered an album for free, but you had to sign up to their newsletter. Day Action band follows [...]

Who? Aviary Ghost What? Melodic folkpop Sounds like? Belle & Sebastian, All things Swedish, Jens Lekman with less emphasis on the catchiness. Something with falsettos. So, I'm not dead. Because i want to treat you on a lot of good new music i've discovered over the last couple of weeks and months, i'll keep my texts short. The first band is Aviary Ghost, a 5-piece from Chicago, who make lushly arranged pop songs. Their songs are very whistable (if that's a word.. [...]
Cute is what they aim for and on 'The Hollow' they pretty much succeed. Self-released by Charlie Crimando and Stephen Kemsley Aviary Ghost's debut album was conceived in a small cold place over a number of years. Despite the sub zeroness the duo still produced ET's bleeting heart as audio. 'The Hollow' is premium advert material because it is blessed with a sincere outlook, a dual paced

Am I the only nerd who gets really annoyed when people misuse the phrase "winter of our discontent"? It doesn't mean that things are fucking sad, assholes. Winter = END, therefore the phrase means "now is the end of our unhappiness". All the bullshit was made into a glorious summer, and everything got totally awesome. What don't you get about that? While we're at it, "wherefore art thou" means "why are you", as in "Romeo, oh Romeo, why the fuck do you gots to be Romeo? Shit would be mad easier if you wasn't." Now that I've [...]

So, it's been a while since I've done a Ten Tracks post. All sorts of junk has happened over here at POP! Stereo central so it just hasn't been possible. One day I'll write a book on my adventures here in Jacksonville. It's seriously best seller material. Anyway, to make up for my lack of Ten Tracks posting I'm giving you not just ten...but 22 tracks! Plus there's even a link to the whole Vanilla Swingers album, which you should download. As per usual, the tracks are all over the place so enjoy the variety and have fun [...]

Aviary Ghost is a perfect example of Sunday morning front porch music. Relaxing, soothing and highly entertaining. If you like The Smiths or Wilco, Aviary Ghost is just the thing you need to be listening to. The imagery of the band has a lot to do with birds and flight. We have this event in Richmond where purple martins fly in huge groups around their nesting area downtown and people came out in droves all summer to watch. It's actually quite a [...]
Maybe it's just us, but fall always seems to be such a depressing time of the year. The sky darkens earlier, the weather gets colder and colder, and aside from a few fortunate lucky kids in Texas, the music festivals are few and far between. Then again, the season does mark a rather stellar time for new music, something certainly reflected in this week's edition of our Friday Mixtape. So maybe things aren't so bad after all... AVIARY GHOST Memory Is A Hallway (Self-Released) Check out the band new VIDEO for Aviary Ghost's "The Brain Is A House," directed by the band with cinematography by Nicholas Raftis III of axiom-crux.net. "The songs are lush and complex, using a perfect harmony of keys, acoustics, and the occasional electric outburst to make songs that are sublimely endearing." – The Scene (LINK)

Starting off with an old favorite. Okkervil River , who featured on A Free Man's Top 10 last year is back next week with their fifth full length record, "The Stand Ins". I've heard a bit of it and it sounds as good or better than last year's gem "The Stage Names". If you've not heard these Texas troubadours, the time is now. Preorder "The Stand Ins" from Jagjaguwar for an early download and cover art poster. MP3: Okkervil River - "Lost Coastlines" Mash-ups and remixes are [...]

It's still in the triple digits here in Vegas, so on some level it's still too early for me to get into "cold weather music", which is not so much a genre as a feeling; you can often tell when the artist has sat through some evil winters (The Smiths were cold weather music, much Canadian techno is also chilly), and their songs are particularly relatable on overcast, cool days. Having said that, I couldn't pass up the chance to talk about Aviary Ghost , and their brilliant, self-released disc Memory Is A Hallway . AG hails from [...]
Some items which caught my interest of late: I quite like this Aviary Ghost song off their new self-released album "Memory Is A Hallway." I don't know what that means, but I do know the lyrics for "Somewhere Else" hit on one of my main tenets of life: "Laughing is much better than a scream." Amen, Aviary brothers! MP3 : Aviary Ghost - Somewhere Else Fabulous track! Here's another one just because it's Monday Tuesday (Christ, what [...]

As any good indie band should, Aviary Ghost began to record music in a one-room apartment during a particularly long Michigan winter. A few years later, they emerged with a thriving and complex album that is fit for anything from driving to singing along to reminiscing. Their latest record, Memory Is a Hallway , is an assorted mix of pop, folk, and even a little cabaret, giving the duo various platforms to relay their views on individual memory and how each person deals with it. mp3 : The Brain Is A House

Doug Draime "Bones" ( Kendra Steiner Editions #107, July, 2008) "Bones of abstract threats thrown at the face of pure innocence" The idea of bones, structure, support, memory, the ability to break and heal, crack and restore, is quite universal. They are unseen, but consistently felt. In Doug Draime's epic poem "Bones" he encompasses all of these thoughts and more. He focuses on the breakdown in society and what might help heal the fractures both hair-line and substantial. [...]

Aviary Ghost - Somewhere Else Aviary Ghost - The Brain Is A House In a late February podcast of "Have You Heard," Bradley and Adam extolled the virtues of Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago . For Emma is a beautifully depressing CD that was the result of Justin Vernon escaping to a solitary winter in Wisconsin after his relationships with his band and girlfriend faded away. For my first assignment on this site I was handed a CD with a similar back-story, but without [...]
There are times that self-releasing an album can be the best option for a band, especially given the many instances of hot-air blowing by music industry personnel - and it's not just major labels that have been known to play the game in miscreant ways. Sometimes, though, artists just don't want to deal with the [...]
