25. Pterodactyl - "Esses" By far the loudest song on this list, it's also catchy as all hell which is certainly an oddity for the noise rock realm. (Bonus: live video) 24. Avril Lavigne - "Girlfriend" Any song with the line "I'm the mother fucking princess" deserves to be on a year end list. I will hold to this theory for as long as I need to. (Bonus: video) 23. The Deathset - "Impossible (Dan

Party Time 2000's latest mixtape is worth taking over the blogosphere in the days leading up to Halloween. We're all looking for something appropriate to play at our Halloween bashes, or when you are handing out candy to spoiled kids in your suburban neighborhood. Party Time's Mixtape is the ultimate Halloween solution. Fresh and Spooky. Party Time Says: The process was creating a deeper darker sound, somehow using pitch shifting and tempo dropping to create a sense of slowed/quickened time. I was trying to create the scariest jams. [...]

Though Coldplay seems to have moved to the category of "Bands that have become way too popular that it's not cool to like them anymore", you can't deny that Chris Martin penned some seriously great songs. And 'The Scientist' is one of those wistful piano ballads everyone knows. Female singers love covering it, too. Avril and Natasha have performed it live, but Johnette Napolitano's version is the proper studio one, and it's on her latest album recently released this year. Hope you enjoy them all. Avril Lavigne - (Myspace) [...]
Just because I don't write about hip-hop doesn't mean I don't listen to it. Normally I don't write about because I have no idea what I'm talking about, and I'm the first to admit it. These are just some releases I like lately. My taste in hip-hop and rap usually runs closer to Immortal Technique, the Coup, and Del the Funky Homosapien than the music I'm posting here, though. Example - You Can't Rap [download or die] I found about about Mike Skinner (aka Example) from Joshua over at [...]

More covers? Alright. Female vocals? You got it. First up (and pictured) are Giant Drag , an absolutely amazing band hailing from California. The band is basically just lead singer Annie Hardy and a cast of revolving musicians (think Bright Eyes with more "adult" lyrics ) but her voice is sweet enough to keep listening. I'm a big fan of Giant Drag and in this instance they cover a Beach Boys tune God Only Knows . Next for your pleasure is the great Amy Millan covering Death Cab for Cutie 's I [...]
Man Man I'd Rather Go Blind (Etta James cover) Foundry Field Recordings Caribou (Pixies Cover) Chris Garneau Between the Bars (Elliott Smith Cover) John Vanderslice Karma Police (Radiohead Cover) Avril Lavigne The Scientist (Coldplay Cover) Iron And Wine - No Surprises (Radiohead Cover) Mp3 Rip: Iron and [...]
[MP3] Eagle Seagull - My Drug Buddy While the new music of Eagle Seagull is still ringing delightfully in your ears, it may be time to hit up the bank of covers and withdrawal a short acoustic Lemonheads' cover. Lead singer Eli performed a short acoustic set some time ago and pulled out this nifty tune, a song that I've always enjoyed. Eli's quivering voice adds a nice sound to a song that had original vocals sounding like the raspy mid-90s alternative rock - mediocre in description, but fitting [...]

It's my birthday today, so this is what you get: (bands I would never normally write about) Nine Days Theirs was the first non-Broadway Musical, non-Britney Spears, not-terrible album I bought with my own money back when I was 12 or 13. I actually still love the Madding Crowd and pull it out sometimes on a rainy day. Nine Days - Absolutely (Story of a Girl) Nine Days - End up Alone [...]

Okay I never would have guessed I would be saying what I am about to say. Avril Lavigne's cover of The Scientist is really good. Who knew that she had a wonderful voice! With all that teen angst, I was fooled. If Avril stopped playing crap, and started playing stuff like this, she would be A-mazing. The original version, by Coldplay (eww) was okay, until it was overplayed (like all Coldplay). Anyways check it out, and I will cross my fingers for more Avril?! [...]

So, apparently I've vastly misjudged Lil' Mama ... Now, granted-the first song to trickle from the pre-pubescent wonder, the too-fucking-catchy "Lip Gloss", was, while a total confection, a bit…uh…lightweight. To hold her to any sort of lyrical mic-rockin' standard is a bit too "my daughter's nine and entering into swim suit competitions" for my taste (she's like 14), but it's undeniable that the girl's a triple-threat on the come-up: she can sing, she can rap, and she can dance (check the "Lip Gloss" vid for some jaw-dropping cuteness). [...]

Some remixes to get your day started. Lately I haven't been actively seeking out remixes, instead letting them find me. It's worked out well, even if that means fewer remixes. Also, I've got a request; I'm looking for: R. Kelly - I'm A Flirt (DJ Obsession soca ragga remix) [ft. Lady Saw & T-Pain . If you happen to know where I can find that, let me know. Enjoy the mixes! "You make me feel so high." Avril Lavigne ~ Contagious from The Best Damn Thing by Avril Lavigne
Kids On TV "Breakdance Hunx (Market Value Mix)" - The same exchange occurs five times over in this song, and with each iteration, its meaning is transformed. What begins as a creepy compliment and some callous advice mutates into hostility and terror as a grim realization sets in: Even if the guy receiving the advice has a very high "market value," his worth as a human being depreciates the moment he accepts the price tag that has been slapped on his ass. (This isn't far off from the major theme of The Wire [...]
Department of Eagles - "No One Does It Like You". A new track by Department of Eagles, Grizzly Bear's terrific sibling band, something that is to my ears a song of infidelity - and yet so deliciously laid back, so warm and easy, so calm & affectionate that it's hard to find even a lick of frustration. Like Grizzly Bear's cover of "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)" (posted last week), "No One Does It..." was inspired by the ridiculously cheap Phil Spector Back to Mono box-set. But although "No One"'s got a modest Wall of Sound, [...]

I know that by posting this I'm risking every last bit of credibility I've built up over the past few months, but that's okay. Credibility is overrated. Even with all the Bright Eyes, National, and Nine Inch Nails flying around over the past week, I've still found some time to listen to Avril Lavigne's upcoming The Best Damn Thing ; for what it is, it's pretty good. While the lyrics are far from intelligent, Avril's voice and the hook-filled melodies more than make up for. Don't let your own snobbishness get in the way of hearing this album. It's [...]

I have something to confess: I've started using iTunes again = [ You see, trying to manage all the incoming music I get for both Resonator and for personal deejay is getting kinda out of hand for me (seeing as its just a hobby at this point and i usually pulll around 50-60 hour work weeks), so I've started to use smart playlist within iTunes. I now have a playlist of all unrated tracks to easily determine exactly what has or hasn't been listened to, and it gives me an easily way to update the genre [...]
