Still with the A's, I checked out Awesome Color after spotting that they'd been added to the PrimaveraSound Festival lineup by ATP earlier this year. Further investigation hinted that they were signed to Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label so they had to be good, right? Damn straight. Their latest album "Electric Aborigines" is a mix of the Stooges' dirt-fuelled rock'n'roll, Comets on Fire freakout and general 70s rock boogie (although slightly sludged up), they're a tight little package. Although there's a couple of little misteps along the way (the Tom Jones "She's [...]

Still riding the MC5/Stooges vibe high and paying tribute to their Michigan roots, Awesome Color follow up their S/T Ecstatic Peace debut in strong fashion. Electric Aborigines feels more produced than their previous effort but certainly not over thought. Packed full of stomping bass and the steamroller chug of electric guitar this album reeks of raw blood and carbide; the acrid smoke of Detroit and Flint is fast seizing your lungs by the time you're barely three tracks in. Further on the trio seem to have also raised the ghost of Bon Scott, echoing prime period AC/DC slow [...]

Once again, I find myself rushing to get this week's Graboid up, so this will be short. Nearly ten years after their last release, Portishead make their triumphant return with Third . After several listens, i'm still not quite sold on the album yet, but it certainly doesn't make me love the group any less. Other releases worth looking at include Santogold's self-titled debut, The Constantines' Kensington Heights , South's (who spells it out as sOuth? cos it's really lame) You Are Here , and hmm...what [...]

Awesome Color has a record coming out April 28th on Ecstatic Peace! . It is the followup to their 2006 self-titled release, and it is called Electric Aborigines . Beyond that, the details are a bit hazy. Typically, when a new(ish) band with a goal of moving units is getting ready to drop a new record in the overcrowded music market, MOKB is inundated with details, both critical and comical. With Awesome Color, it wasn't quite piecing together the life of Charles Foster Kane, but it was no walk in the [...]

Now, this is how you do a side one track one. "Eyes of Light" kickstarts Awesome Color's second album with a psychedelic storm of piercing feedback, a flurry of drums, and a dark, sinister bass riff, and after taking in the first minute and a half, there's no question what comes next. More heavy riffing. Oh, guitarist Derek Stratton, will occasionally take a break or two from slaying during the verses and strum a menacing chord or two, but as the tension continues to mount, you know another dirty, Detroit-style guitar explosion is imminent. Care to [...]

Derek Stanton, Allison Busch, Michael Troutman of Awesome Color. You may remember Awesome Color as that totally awesome Brooklyn by way of Michigan trio signed to Thurston Moore's label Ecstatic Peace! They're known them best as that band who positively wailed before Dinosaur JR and Sonic Youth's sets on their US Tours back in 2006. Awesome Color play radical psych rock with tons of delicious noise - [...]

Dinosaur Jr. - credit Dinosaur Jr. make their return to DC tonight. They will be playing a show at Black Cat . Awesome Color and the excellent Dead Confederate will be providing support. Dinosaur Jr. - Just Like Heaven (The Cure Cover) Awesome Color - Grown Dead Confederate - The Rat
Or What I did with a Month off From Blogging. - I seriously considered giving up blogging for good. The jury is still out on this one actually. - I listened to Bob Dylan 's Modern Times a dozen times. I finished reading the Dylan biography Behind the Shades Revisited . Mr. Zimmerman's adventures have encouraged me to finally listen to The Band and delve further into the blues. Following Dylan down this road led me further and further from [...]

Been riding the third rail on Brooklyn’s, via SE Michigan, Awesome Color these past few weeks cause it offers up a conundrum I’m trying to shake: blitzing from the birth canal of The Ashton Bros. is noble, and yours truly is clearly guilty to a degree on it, but completely bellowing from their muscle-taught R&B/skronk just seems to damn green. Each time this CD spins I wanna stop it at the first bit “Grown.†And if so, tis a shame to miss out on “Free Man,†a fine jam for this quickly fading summer epoch that these three [...]

I only quote PR materials when absolutely necessary (or when I have nothing better to say) and when I read, "Primal o-mind rhythm with boss-bliss lyrix and a lead guitar lick-lashing that'll make you cry 'o hell yes!' every time," it became absolutely necessary to quote. There was no way I was going to try my hand at translating that. Awesome Color are a three piece out of Ann Arbor Michigan hand picked and produced by Thurston Moore for his own Ecstatic Peace label. This is going to sound trite, but I hadn't checked [...]
